MONSTER LIZARDS RAVAGE GULF COAST! Based on photographic evidence spotted yesterday, apparently Coronavirus is causing residents of Glen Rose, TX to slowly mutate into dinosaurs; note that the transformation process isn’t yet complete on the nightmarish human/dinosaur beast at left:

Classical allusion in headline:

FIGHTING THE BUREAUCRACY TO DO IT: Distilleries trying to keep up with demand for hand sanitizer, follow federal guidelines. “Distilleries large and small across the state and nation have switched from making alcohol to producing hand sanitizer, which has been in short supply in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. But several problems have arose over the last couple of weeks, including a shortage of supplies, confusion about U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines and concern that large federal excise tax bills may await those producing the hand sanitizer because of the type of alcohol being used.”

THEY’LL STAND BY WHILE STUDENTS AND FACULTY ACCUSE AMERICA OF GENOCIDE, BUT THEY DO HAVE THEIR LIMITS: UW-Madison publicly denounces ‘anti-China’ chalkings amid deadly pandemic. One of the chalkings referred to the coronavirus as the “Chinese Virus.” Another stated, “Fuck the Chinese Government.”

Why is the University of Wisconsin parroting Chinese government propaganda?

Reminder: The Virus Is a Fire, and the Arsonist Is China. “China did this. It’s not racist to say so. Telling the truth doesn’t make you responsible for the actions of racists. Thinking so, saying so, only helps the people who did this to you.”

THE BOSTON HERALD’S FRONT PAGE TODAY:

BUT BRITAIN’S NHS SHOULD TOTALLY BE A MODEL FOR AMERICAN HEALTH CARE: Frightened by Coronavirus, Many of U.K.’s Poles Are Heading Home. “They say the government’s slow response and a creaking health service contrast poorly with Poland’s health system and aggressive actions. . . . ‘I used the National Health Service once and it was a terrible experience’.”

Well, plus: “The epidemic also put many of them out of work.”

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH OUR RULING CLASS IS THAT IT’S NOT JUST FREQUENTLY WRONG, IT’S THAT IT’S ALWAYS SELF-ASSUREDLY ARROGANT IN ITS WRONGNESS:

NO LONGER INTERIM, Randy Boyd named president of the University of Tennessee. Good choice by the Board, though also an easy one. He comes from a business background and I think his skillset has a lot to do with how well the university handled the coronavirus transition.

BATHROOM WARS: I’m still waiting for the case of Grimm v. Gloucester County Board to be decided by U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. This is the same case that was before the Supreme Court a few years ago. Back then it was called Gloucester County School Board v. G.G. But then the Trump Administration withdrew the Obama-Era guidance that told schools that they must assign transgender students to the bathrooms and showers they psychologically identify with rather than the ones suited to their anatomy.  The Supreme Court therefore sent the case back to the lower courts for reconsideration in light of guidance’s withdrawal.  The trial court at least continued to adhere to the Obama Administration’s position.

Will the case find its way back to the Supreme Court? That’s entirely possible. If it does, I plan to file a revised version of my amicus curiae brief.

Of course, it is possible that won’t be necessary. But I’m a born always-be-prepared-for-worst pessimist. The upside of that characteristic is that I had plenty of food in my pantry when the pandemic hit.

GREAT MOMENTS IN OPTICS:

In 2004, the late Charles Krauthammer coined “the Pressure Cooker Theory of Hydraulic Release” to explain why the left exploded after maintaining a veneer of civility in the immediate aftermath of 9/11:

The hostility, resentment, envy and disdain, all superheated in Florida, were not permitted their natural discharge. Came Sept. 11 and a lid was forced down. How can you seek revenge for a stolen election by a nitwit usurper when all of a sudden we are at war and the people, bless them, are rallying around the flag and hailing the commander in chief? With Bush riding high in the polls, with flags flying from pickup trucks (many of the flags, according to Howard Dean, Confederate), the president was untouchable.

The Democrats fell unnaturally silent. For two long, agonizing years, they had to stifle and suppress. It was the most serious case of repression since Freud’s Anna O. went limp. The forced deference nearly killed them. And then, providentially, they were saved. The clouds parted and bad news rained down like manna: WMDs, Abu Ghraib, Richard Clarke, Paul O’Neill, Joe Wilson and, most important, continued fighting in Iraq.

With the president stripped of his halo, his ratings went down. The spell was broken. He was finally, once again, human and vulnerable. With immense relief, the critics let loose.

The result has been volcanic. The subject of one prominent new novel is whether George W. Bush should be assassinated. This is all quite unhinged. Good God. What if Bush is reelected? If they lose to him again, Democrats will need more than just consolation. They’ll need therapy.

And as Hillary demonstrates, given an event this month that one way or another involves the entire country, Democrats still do.
