DEMOCRATS SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT: As John Fund explains, by putting Proposition 16 on the ballot, California’s deep-blue legislators help elected Republicans Michelle Park Steel and Young Kim to Congress. Washington State’s Democrats may want to take note.
It’s a Chinese virus. It came from China.
Flashback: Time to put China on lockdown for its dishonesty amid coronavirus crisis.
A competent, honest response would have placed the world on notice much earlier. A China that cared about the rest of the world would have halted flights abroad while this disease was spreading, instead of allowing its citizens to spread willy-nilly around the globe. (As Brian Kennedy writes: “China seems to have taken the position that if they were to suffer the coronavirus, so too was the United States and the rest of the world. What else is to explain the continuation of flights from China to the United States at the rate of some 20,000 passengers a day, until President Trump wisely shut them down?”)
Related: Blame the Chinese Communist Party for the coronavirus crisis. “From the moment the coronavirus emerged in central China, Beijing has acted in a way that made a pandemic possible and then inevitable. It covered up what was happening in Wuhan. It silenced whistleblowers who sought to warn the world. It stole medical supplies from other countries, even while claiming the sickness was no big deal. . . . If Beijing had given the real number of infected people and deaths, other countries would have recognized the danger, and taken necessary steps.”

CHINA MOVES TO BAN FOREIGN MISSIONARIES: A government agency controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) — but I repeat myself — has issued a 40-article regulation that extends the government’s suppression of Christian congregations in China to foreign missionaries coming into the country. It’s Mao’s Cultural Revolution all over again but this time the Red Guards are government bureaucrats and secret police armed with digital weapons.

INEZ STEPMAN: Contra your neighborhood hipster bar, there is no such thing as “craft vodka.”
Plus: “Now, I realize the French have made quite a reputation for themselves in matters of gastronomy and intoxication. Their wine, their cheese, their duck confit; far be it from me to push the people out of their well-deserved lane. To be honest, their accomplishments generally outshine my own hereditary Slavs in that department. But vodka, vodka we know.”
BIG TECH OCCUPIES THE UNITED STATES: “Big Tech has infiltrated the American homeland and is imposing speech laws that resemble those of Europe, challenging the authority and longevity of the First Amendment.”
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR: ‘Good riddance’: Tech’s flight from San Francisco is a relief to some advocates. “Software engineers, CEOs and venture capitalists have chosen to jump from the Bay Area to places such as Denver, Miami and Austin, Texas. Some San Francisco residents are fine with it.”
Many urban centers have seen residents move out in large numbers since the start of stay-at-home orders in March, but the shift has been especially dramatic for San Francisco, a city that was already experiencing rapid change because of the tech industry.
Software engineers, CEOs and venture capitalists have chosen to jump from the Bay Area to places such as Denver, Miami and Austin, Texas, citing housing costs, California’s relatively high income tax and the Bay Area’s general resistance to rapid growth and change.
The scale of the departures is visible in vacant high-end apartments, moth-balled offices and quieter streets in neighborhoods popular with tech workers. And while no one is exactly celebrating, especially as Covid-19 has devastated the incomes of many people, some residents were ready to take a break from the rich.
“The gentrification pressure has been at least momentarily relieved,” said John Elberling, executive director of Todco, an affordable housing nonprofit that operates in the South of Market neighborhood alongside the shuttered headquarters of countless tech companies and startups.
Who will pay for the “affordable” housing once the tax revenues dry up?
WORST POLITICAL CLASS EVER: The Political Class’s Hypocrisy Long Predates Covid-19.
On some level, politicians have always believed that they deserve special treatment, that the ordinary rules don’t apply to them. They have pushed for limits on school choice for the poor while sending their own children to private schools. They have advocated for gun control and defunding the police while being protected by armed security guards. They have denounced the influence of money in politics while courting wealthy donors at closed-door fundraisers.
But the coronavirus protocol breaches we’ve witnessed this year could wind up being far more consequential if they lead to less support for nanny-state policies. Conservatives, who are more constitutionally averse to busybody politicians making decisions for people, were always warier of lockdowns and the rationale behind them. What has changed since the spring is growing skepticism of public-health edicts among liberals. . . .
These people are perfectly aware that infection rates are rising and that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly cautions against celebrating the holiday with people outside your household. Alas, many of them don’t seem to care anymore. According to the American Automobile Association, there could be as many as 50 million Thanksgiving travelers this year, only 10% less than in 2019.
This is a form of mass civil disobedience like nothing the country has seen since the 1960s. Some of it is born of Covid fatigue, to be sure. But the endless parade of politicians flouting their own rules surely has also played a role. It began shortly after the spring lockdowns and if anything has become more commonplace, even farcical.
We are ruled, in many places, by clowns. Often vicious clowns, but still clowns.
IF YOU LIVE IN THE DENVER AREA, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Toast. Like many places, it’s going to have a hard time surviving the completely insane second lockdown mandated by the crazy people in our state government. Get some take out, and give them a hand with the survival thing, until we come out the other side, okay?
Oh, and the food is great. It would be nice if we can have at least some good things on the other side, no?
