YEAH, PRETTY MUCH:

I HAVEN’T WATCHED TONIGHT’S DEBATE, BUT THIS TAKE FROM A FRIEND ON FACEBOOK SOUNDS APT: “So much for the ‘return dignity to the White House’ trope. Sheesh, what a low-rent crew.”

ANOTHER UPDATE: From another friend: “I haven’t watched all the Dem debate tonight, but I’ve seen enough to see one thing clearly. The main reason Comrade Sanders is leading is that the rest of the field is absolutely terrible. Between Vice President Yells at Clouds, the Fake Indian, the Boy Mayor of a Town Smaller than Round Rock, the two Movie Supervillains and the Forgettable Senator, this is surely the weakest major party presidential field ever.”

OPEN THREAD: Make this one special.

21ST CENTURY RELATIONSHIPS: Emily Halnon: My boyfriend’s wedding dress unveiled my own shortcomings over masculinity. “Those feelings illuminated some unanticipated boundaries of where I define attractiveness in men and when I still crave traditional masculinity. I realized I wanted less dress and more flannel shirts, trucker hats and sandstone Carhartts. . . . My boyfriend’s wedding dress pushed me to perform a scrupulous inventory of my deepest ideas about masculinity and helped me identify my shortfalls as a woman who wants to help rewrite gender norms. As I went through this exercise, I chatted with a handful of girlfriends about it, who could all identify their own small hang-ups with masculinity: their need for men who are bigger and taller than they are, or who are better than them at sports, or who don’t cry in front of them.” It’s hilarious, and sad, that she’s been conditioned to feel guilty about this.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Doctors and nurses fighting coronavirus in China die of both infection and fatigue. “The rate of new infections and deaths overall appears to be slowing in China. But the toll on medical workers reflects the harrowing costs of a politically delayed response that overwhelmed Wuhan and Hubei’s healthcare systems. Hospital staff were left underprotected, overworked and increasingly vulnerable, even as they became the touchstones between a frightened public and a misdirected government.”

DRUNK SOBERBLOG: Liveblogging the South Carolina Democratic Debate.

I’m unavailable tonight, so Tyler O’Neil is taking on the liveblog duties. I don’t know what he’s drinking, but let’s hope it’s strong.

PLUS: Devastating: Trump PAC Uses Obama to Eviscerate Biden’s Support Among Black Voters in SC.

Related (From Ed): Live at 8 p.m. ET: Nuke the commie: “If you’ve avoided the Democratic debates until now, here’s your — likely — last chance to watch one that counts. The next debate won’t happen until March 15, long after the Super Tuesday states will have voted. Bernie will be there; Mike Bloomberg will almost certainly be there; Pete Buttigieg will *probably* be there. But that may be it. If the Sanders express rolls through South Carolina on Saturday, taking out Biden and Tom Steyer, and then speeds to a bunch of victories seven days from now on Super Tuesday, that’s probably it for Warren and Klobuchar. Mayor Pete might stick around a bit longer, enticed by the prospect of a three-way debate where he’d be the clear middle option between the socialist Bernie and the plutocrat Bloomy. But unless something happens to change the trajectory of the primary tonight and on Saturday, when South Carolina votes, that mid-March debate won’t matter. Bernie will be home free.”

I FEEL LIKE THIS IS MOSTLY ABOUT THE MONEY: San Francisco declares local emergency amid coronavirus outbreak. “This declaration will help the city get resources they need to respond to an outbreak. . . . Three people have been treated for the coronavirus in the city. None of the patients are San Francisco residents.”

UPDATE (From Ed): To be fair, we are talking about San Francisco, after all: Fecal transmission may be responsible for coronavirus’s rapid spread.

FILE UNDER THINGS I HOPE ARE TRUE: Larry Kudlow says US has contained the coronavirus and the economy is holding up nicely. Kudlow has done an excellent job, and I like him personally, but nobody knows whether we’ve contained the coronavirus successfully, or where the economy is headed, at this point. On the other hand, I guess he’s expected to say stuff like this, to the point that it might promote panic if he didn’t. . . .

OF COURSE.
