JAMES LILEKS’ WEDNESDAY REVIEW OF MODERN THOUGHT:

I wish my newsfeed wasn’t full of people dressed in black moving through previously beautiful cities burning and breaking and chanting and beating. You’d like to think it could be stopped. But we’ve given up a lot of the things we used to think.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THEY COULDN’T’ GET ANY CRAZIER:

THE MEDIA GASLIGHTING ISN’T WORKING: Most say ‘protests’ have become ‘riots,’ new high in support for police.

Support for police has surged past 4-1 in key battleground 2020 states, likely driven by concerns that “peaceful” Black Lives Matter protests have become more violent.

A new survey for Heritage Action For America found that opposition to defunding the police, part of the Black Lives Matter movement, has jumped to 79%, with just 16% supporting the defund plan.

That opposition to slashing police is the highest of any recent poll, and a strong indicator that the type of law and order message pushed by President Trump and the GOP has support in Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where the survey was conducted.

Well, as we’ve seen, even the black community opposes defunding the police:

“The worst place for a black person to live in America is a Democrat-controlled city.”

Heck, even Talcum X has figured out that “systemic racism” is a Democratic Party problem.

SEEN ON FACEBOOK: “Bill Clinton spoke at the DNC on the day pictures of him getting a massage from one of Epstein’s trafficking victims were released. He spoke in support of Joe Biden whose own VP pick said last year that she believes accusations lodged against him by women. I would say the Dems talk about being pro-women is just lip service but Bill Clinton might get the wrong idea.”

DECOUPLING, BIGLY: Trump Just Took the Nuclear Option on Huawei.

I linked to a similar report yesterday, but this one is more detailed:

On Monday the Commerce Department expanded its foreign-produced direct product rule to include situations “where U.S. software or technology is the basis for a foreign-produced item” that will be used by Huawei, or where the company is party to such a transaction, such as being an intermediary supplier.

There are dozens of steps in developing, manufacturing and installing chips in a device, with U.S. technology an integral part throughout. Synopsys Inc. and Cadence Design Systems Inc. make software used to design semiconductors; Lam Research Corp. and Applied Materials Inc. are major suppliers of manufacturing equipment — all four companies are based in Silicon Valley.

There are many more American technology providers crucial to the process. Remove just one, and any chip company will struggle to keep up. Removing them all would be akin to cutting off the oxygen. And if the new rule is to be strictly interpreted, then even the use of generalist technologies like PCs running on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows and Intel Corp. processors could be prohibited.

Huawei isn’t merely a Communist front corporation — it was built on the bones of Nortel, picked clean by Huawei in what amounted to state-sanctioned intellectual theft and espionage.

THROW AWAY THE KEY: Manhunt underway for attacker in Portland truck assault: police. “Portland police on Tuesday identified a suspect in Sunday night’s attack on a truck driver who was seen on video being pulled from the vehicle and violently beaten. The Portland Police Bureau is on the hunt for Marquise Love, who also goes by the name ‘Keese Love,’ for his alleged involvement in the vicious assault that was caught on video and circulated on social media.”

THAT’S NOT VERY SMART: AI Company Leaks Over 2.5M Medical Records. “The medical records are quite detailed and include names, insurance records, medical diagnosis notes, and payment records. It looks as though the data was sourced from insurance companies and relates to car accident claims and referrals for neck and spine injuries. The majority of the personal information is thought to be for individuals located in New York, with a total of 2,594,261 records exposed.”

NO ESCAPING THE HOMELESS IN SAN FRANCISCO: SF Officials Shut Down Sushi Restaurant’s Controversial Dining Domes. The clear plastic tents violated city health orders that require the free flow of air to prevent COVID-19 transmission.

“San Francisco officials have ordered a SoMa [South of Market Street] fine dining restaurant to take down the clear plastic tents it put up for outdoor dining, less than two weeks after the enclosures made headlines not just for their groovy Barbarella-armor looks, but as — to many — a symbol of San Francisco’s growing gap between the wealthy and the very, very poor.”

JOANNE JACOBS: Democrats count on ‘rage moms’ to elect Biden.

Lots of moms (and dads) are frustrated, but I suspect the anger is going in many different directions.

In particular, parents are angry — fairly or unfairly — at their public school systems for ineffective remote lessons, ever-changing reopening plans and now more ineffective remote lessons on unreliable platforms. Some are angry at teachers’ unions, who’ve fought to keep schools closed and to limit their virtual work hours.

Trump has pushed for reopening schools, and if schools remain closed, giving federal funding to giving federal funding to parents so they “can send their child to the private, charter, religious, or home school of their choice.”

As parents scramble for alternatives, choice vouchers look appealing to those who’d never imagined a world of pods, hubs, microschools and homeschool co-ops.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NIGHT TWO OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. Taking one for the team, Tyler O’Neil watched the Democrats’ convention so you didn’t have to. Including:

3. No, AOC wasn’t un-endorsing Biden

When AOC used her  — sorry, 96 seconds — to endorse Sanders, many people on Twitter started scratching their heads. “Did AOC” started trending on Twitter as people wondered exactly what was happening.

The congresswoman herself cleared up the confusion.

“If you were confused, no worries! Convention rules require roll call & nominations for every candidate that passes the delegate threshold. I was asked to 2nd the nom for Sen. Sanders for roll call,” AOC tweeted. “I extend my deepest congratulations to [Joe Biden] – let’s go win in November.”

Of course, AOC got in as many woke buzzwords as she could in those 96 seconds. “Colonization” fit into those few seconds, of course.

AOC also uttered the word “systemic,” of course. Drink!
