AT AMAZON, stock up on Pet Food and Supplies.
I ASKED A FRIEND IN HONG KONG HOW THINGS ARE GOING AND GOT THIS RESPONSE:
There appears to be a new disease spreading throughout Hong Kong now…
I think the term for it is “cabin fever”.
The wife and I went to the Foreign Correspondents Club to the Main Bar – absolutely packed.
So we ventured downstairs to Bert’s Bar where it usually isn’t crowded – completely full.
So we left and looked for a bar or restaurant for dinner. Pretty much every single one of them full.
We weren’t keen hanging in such crowded venues, so we came home and ordered out.
You have to wonder how many were out mingling with dozens of other strangers spent the week “working from home”.Reminds me of an ice storm one winter while at UT.
No way students could get to classes with the sidewalks and streets iced over.
However, they somehow found a way around lunchtime, usually on their hand and knees when crossing the street, to make it to one of the nearby bars to drink the afternoon away…..But cases have spiked a bit in Hong Kong of late.
Every member of a travel group last month to Egypt has come down with the virus – which has spiked the numbers.

Meanwhile, there are over 24,000 people in Hong Kong under quarantine.

The Government also lists every building in which an infected person in the past 14 days has visited:
https://www.coronavirus.gov.hk/eng/index.html
In most cases, if someone has visited a club or restaurant, it is shut down for a period of time – this has happened to both the Jockey Club and the Foreign Correspondents Club – and they inform the entire membership of what day, time and place that person visited.
A doctor earlier this week told me that when their 14-day quarantine is over, they are required to be tested.
That is where most of the new, non-imported cases are emerging from.
Apparently, there are five different tests available of varying accuracy.
The most accurate one requires deep throat sputum as it is most likely to come from deep in the lungs.
Many, especially Chinese females, don’t like that test and ask for a different method. Don’t know why that is the case.So far, only 3 have died and were quite old or had pre-existing conditions.
But for the most part, people are still being cautious with many small businesses shuttered for the time being.
But everyone wears a mask, temperature checks to enter offices and clubs, and much more diligent hand-washing.
Most kids seem to have adjusted to virtual learning and it seems to be working quite well.
So there you are.
AN IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION:

That said, anyone coming back should have to self-quarantine (at least) for 14 days.

A CANADIAN FRIEND WHO’S QUITE ANTI-TRUMP, BUT VERY CONCERNED ABOUT CORONAVIRUS, GIVES HIS SPEECH AND ACTIONS HIGH MARKS. She also forwards this comment from elsewhere: “The travel ban itself isn’t that important. What’s important is that tens of millions of Americans who scoffed at social distancing this morning will not tomorrow morning.”
I do think that the travel ban is also important, and its far-reaching consequences, which I’m sure Trump appreciates, mean that he’s taking this problem very seriously indeed.
JOHN HINDERAKER: Joe Biden Can’t Be President. “I’m not saying Biden shouldn’t be president. That has always been true. I am saying that he lacks the physical and mental qualities necessary to do the job–not to do it well, but to do it at all. Biden’s mental status has slipped badly over the last few years, and he appears physically frail as well. Both his handlers and the press try to shield him from public scrutiny and hide his decline, but under the bright lights of a presidential campaign, it can’t be done.”
HOW THE BUREAUCRACY FAILED US ON CORONAVIRUS TESTS. “As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region. To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged in countries outside of China, where the infection began.”
UPDATE: A friend messages: “When the NYT says government is the problem, it’s the problem.”
OPEN THREAD: Talk talk.
CORONAVIRUS: Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson Test Positive for Coronavirus.
TRUMP’S SPEECH: Good on substance — a laundry list of necessary proposals, followed by a call for unity. A travel ban to/from Europe (except UK) is sweeping, and the payroll tax cut will help a lot of working people. Other moves to reduce the economic shock, as well as efforts at boosting the health response. He’s right that we aren’t in a financial crisis; it’s a public health crisis with financial implications.
I hope they’ll encourage state governments to make unemployment compensation quickly available to people who aren’t working because of the virus or shutdowns, and to encourage employers to loosen sick-leave policies.
That said, Trump seemed kinda subdued, at least for Trump. Then again, I would be too.
UPDATE: Salena Zito comments on Facebook: “That was a dispassionate delivery of very grave news which will be assessed largely on tribalism & not on content. My personal reaction is to pray for our country & check on all of my elderly neighbors remotely obviously to offer to get them what they may be short on & share my old board games.” Well said.

I HOPE THIS ANALYSIS IS RIGHT: Why Deaths from Coronavirus Are So High in Italy. “One factor affecting the country’s death rate may be the age of its population—Italy has the oldest population in Europe, with about 23% of residents 65 or older, according to The New York Times. The median age in the country is 47.3, compared with 38.3 in the United States, the Times reported. Many of Italy’s deaths have been among people in their 80s, and 90s, a population known to be more susceptible to severe complications from COVID-19.”
