WITH DNC IN MIND, CITY BANS CARRYING URINE, FECES: San Francisco dome dining has already returned, with some modifications. “The modifications ended up being quite simple: The bones of the domes are still intact, but the staff cut off the bottom 4 feet of the plastic cover — effectively creating a rounded tent that’s open on the sides. ‘It kind of defeats the main purpose of why we had it up in the beginning but it is doing it some justice. It’s better than nothing,’ said Hashiri manager Kenichiro Matsuura, noting the modified domes don’t adequately block the wind…The restaurant is located on Mint Plaza, a SoMa gathering place with many homeless encampments nearby, and Matsuura said people had stuck their fingers in diners’ meals, spit in their food and defecated next to tables. The structures were a way for the restaurant to control the dining environment.”

SOMEBODY FINALLY READ THE CAMP OF THE SAINTS: Taking Hard Line, Greece Turns Back Migrants by Abandoning Them at Sea. “Greeks were once far more understanding of the plight of migrants. But many have grown frustrated and hostile after a half-decade in which other European countries offered Greece only modest assistance as tens of thousands of asylum seekers languished in squalid camps on overburdened Greek islands.”

THEY’LL TURN ON A DIME TO PUSH THE CONTRIVED-HYSTERIA-OF-THE-DAY: Democrats Who Once Pilloried Postal Service Now Find Much to Praise: Obama and Biden among Dems advancing conspiracy theories about Trump’s USPS handling.

I’m sorry, but I died after Net Neutrality was repealed — remember when Democrats were threatening Ajit Pai’s wife and kids over that? — so it’s hard to care.

ANOTHER FAILURE OF PUBLIC HEALTH: Ignorance About Covid-19 Risk Is ‘Nothing Short of Stunning,’ Research Report Says.

A leading financial firm, Franklin Templeton, figured that people’s behavioral response to the pandemic will play a crucial role in shaping the economic recovery, so they teamed up with Gallup, the polling outfit, to find out what people know and don’t know.

“These results are nothing short of stunning,” concluded the firm. “Six months into this pandemic, Americans still dramatically misunderstand the risk of dying from COVID-19.”

That’s no exaggeration, and the implications go far beyond the economic behavior Franklin Templeton was interested in.

Here is what they found:

First, the Franklin Templeton-Gallup survey found that the general population has a little understanding how heavily the pandemic is focused on the older population. It is not broad-based. From the report:

On average, Americans believe that people aged 55 and older account for just over half of total COVID-19 deaths; the actual figure is 92%.
Americans believe that people aged 44 and younger account for about 30% of total deaths; the actual figure is 2.7%.
Americans overestimate the risk of death from COVID-19 for people aged 24 and younger by a factor of 50; and they think the risk for people aged 65 and older is half of what it actually is (40% vs 80%).

You can blame the news media, too.

UPDATE: “Risk of death” is confusing there, but they’re not saying that you have an 80% risk of dying of Covid if you’re over 65. Rather they’re saying that 80% of the deaths occur in that cohort, I believe. See the original study here.

SHOCKER: School Reopenings Linked to Union Influence and Politics, Not Safety. “Some have noted these reopening decisions often appear to be driven by politics rather than public health. Unfortunately, many teachers groups are contributing to this appearance. In their report on safely reopening schools, for example, the Los Angeles’ teachers union went beyond detailing the safety needs of teachers and students, also calling for politicians to enact a wealth tax, Medicare for All, and a ban on charter schools. Similarly, 10 teachers unions across the country joined a coalition that included the Democratic Socialists of America to ‘Demand Safe Schools.’ But rather than focus on student and teacher safety, they demanded a ban on new charter schools and voucher programs as well as the cancellation of rents and mortgages.”

Defund them and give the money to parents.

A PEN AND A PHONE:

Remember, Trump’s executive orders are a threat to democracy, but when Democrats use them to end-run the legislative process, that’s just bold action.
