IT’S A COMMON, GARDEN VARIETY VIRUS. NOT EVEN IN THE TOP TEN HIGH SCORES WITH PLAYERS LIKE THE BLACK PLAGUE, SMALL POX, MALARIA, OR A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS THAT HAVE KILLED HUMANS THROUGH MILLENNIA. OUR SUICIDAL OVERREACTION? THAT IS FOR THE AGES, THOUGH: Is the Coronavirus Unprecedented? Supposing any historians exist in the future we’re destroying, they’ll be very puzzled at the insanity. But some might find a clue in decades of post-apocalyptic fiction, and a desperate need to prove OrangeManBad on the part of those controlling the media narrative.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE WAY TO THE HOME OF THE BRAVE AND THE LAND OF THE FREE? BECAUSE I’M MIGHTY: Homesick.

And please, in the name of all that’s holy, if you don’t retain anything from this massive and costly debacle, remember: computer models are only as good as the data put in, and the assumptions made. And if you have trouble remembering, engrave “GIGO” on your forehead so you read it in the mirror every morning and remember “garbage in, garbage out.”

NEW DOCS TIE OBAMA INTO EFFORT AGAINST FLYNN, BIDEN ALSO IN ROOM. “[Susan] Rice confirmed in a prior memo that memorialized the meeting that both she and then Vice President Joe Biden were in the Room at the time Obama told Yates the information about Flynn.”
BLOOD ON CUOMO’S HANDS: New York’s coronavirus nursing home death toll didn’t have to be so high.
It’s long been clear the official numbers didn’t capture the coronavirus’ full toll in New York’s nursing homes — but the updated count was nonetheless appalling.
Yet Gov. Andrew Cuomo still won’t admit his administration was wrong to mandate that facilities filled with those most virus-vulnerable take in COVID-positive patients.
The new Health Department info released late Monday adds 1,700 presumed coronavirus deaths to the grim total, suggesting that COVID-19 complications have killed 4,813 residents of nursing homes and adult-care facilities — and that doesn’t include those who died in hospitals.
Cuomo downplayed the count Tuesday: “I would take all of these numbers now with a grain of salt,” since “what does a ‘presumed death’ mean, right?”
Considering how pessimistic Cuomo has been in other areas, such doubt seems self-serving. We know fatality rates are far higher than normal — and the coronavirus has proven most deadly to the elderly and those with certain preexisting conditions. Indeed, Cuomo admitted Tuesday, “We knew the nursing homes were going to be a target.”
So why on earth did his health commissioner, Howard Zucker, force nursing homes to take in virus-positive patients starting March 25?
Why, indeed?
CBS CHICAGO BLOWS THE LID OFF THE DANGERS OF…The Ice Cream Man? The budding H. L. Mencken received quite a Twitter ratio for his hard-hitting reportage:

SHEER HEART ATTACK: Brian May Hospitalized After Tearing Butt Muscle To Shreds While Gardening.
GOOD: A Unanimous Supreme Court Brushes Back the Legal Resistance. “The Supreme Court is often divided on ideological lines on hot-button issues, and tends to write unanimously when dealing with procedural questions where a lower court just went off the rails. So, when the Court takes a unanimous stand in a case involving a controversial political issue and goes out of its way to dress down the lower-court judges, you know they really went overboard. That’s what happened this morning in an immigration case, United States v. Sineneng-Smith. Justice Ginsburg herself delivered the lecture to the Ninth Circuit to knock off the antics and stick to the cases before it.”
CCP VIRUS UPDATE: ‘This Is Nuts:’ Ted Cruz slams San Antonio city council resolution deeming ‘Chinese virus’ a hate speech term.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz lambasted the San Antonio City Council following news that they were set to vote on a resolution labeling terms for the coronavirus’s Chinese origin as “hate speech.”
“Resolution being voted on by San Antonio City Council this morning labels terms ‘Chinese Virus’ and ‘Kung Fu Virus’ as hate speech and ‘all persons are encouraged to report any such antisemitic, discriminatory or racist incidents to the proper authorities for investigation,’” San Antonio, Texas, investigative reporter Jaie Avila wrote on Twitter Thursday.
Cruz, responding to a tweet from syndicated talk show host Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo, called the move “nuts” and used the Twitter hashtag “#nospeechpolice.”
“This is NUTS,” Cruz tweeted. “SA City Council behaving like a lefty college faculty lounge, triggered by Chick-fil-A & the words ‘Wuhan virus.’ If they want to investigate someone, start with NYT & CNN who both repeatedly (and rightly) referred to it as ‘the Chinese coronavirus.’”
To dust off a line from the 2008 election by Michael Moynihan, then with Reason, I can’t wait to study the Bletchley Park level of racial cryptography necessary to conclude how referring to the “Chinese Virus” is anti-Semitic.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE TREES: An Essay on 1917, the Most Profound Film Since Tree of Life.
Mendes has signaled such a trajectory already. Recall what happened in the German barracks scene: after a terrific explosion (that nearly knocked me out of my IMAX seat), Schofield would certainly have died had Blake not pulled him out of the rubble. In the end, Blake—with the young woman and baby and the singer in the wooded glade—has pulled Schofield out of spiritual ruin as well. Though dead, Blake’s spirited and virtuous example has helped bring Schofield back from a kind of living death. Nearly dehumanized by war, Schofield’s epic quest has revealed that the world is not a machine. Existence is not merely a test of survival. The created order is not intended for consumption, least of all for mindless destruction. Evil is everywhere, but the cherry trees—representing civilization—will grow back, and in greater number. Goodness, truth, and beauty are all around us, and will be found in greater measure in the age to come.
In part of because of the Hitchcock-style gimmick of the appearance of one continuous take, 1917 didn’t work for me as a sustained movie when I saw it on Christmas Day, which seems like a million years ago. (Before we all got to live out the sequel, 1919.) But it’s obvious there’s much going on in the movie, including the possible subtext worked out at the above link; if you saw the movie, read the whole thing. (If you haven’t, there are plenty of spoilers there.)
