YOUR DAILY TREACHER: Dissent Is Patriotic Again, Thanks to Devin Nunes. “My hat is off to Devin Nunes for reminding liberals what liberalism is supposed to be all about. The rules will change again, of course, the minute another Democrat is elected president. But until then, I’ll just enjoy the feeling of being proven right for once.”

A.I.: Walmart Builds a Secret Weapon to Battle Amazon for Retail’s Future. “The world’s largest retailer is using Jetblack, a money-losing personal-shopping service, to develop artificial intelligence to compete with e-commerce giant Amazon.”

Walmart executives are betting the upstart becomes a powerful weapon in an escalating technological ground war with Amazon.com Inc., as the two companies battle over shoppers who are increasingly making all sorts of purchases online. Amazon reset the landscape with Prime, in which more than 100 million people globally get two-day delivery and other perks for $119 a year. Even though Walmart is bigger in sales overall, it is an underdog online, and it is fighting for a larger presence.

Walmart is using Jetblack’s army of human agents to train an artificial intelligence system that could someday power an automated personal-shopping service, preparing Walmart for a time when the search bar disappears and more shopping is done through voice-activated devices, said Jetblack CEO Jenny Fleiss.

“It’s the tech of the future, right? It’s not what everyone is doing today,” said Ms. Fleiss, who previously co-founded apparel rental company Rent The Runway. The CEO said it could be five to seven years before the system is mostly automated and less reliant on humans. “This is a long journey,” she said. “And I think we were aware of that going in.”

POTENTIAL VERSUS PROVEN THREATS: China claims the DF-26C IRBM has a maneuverable warhead capable of sinking U.S. warships at sea. It’s ostensibly a carrier killer ballistic missile. But so far China has never tested the missile against a “static or moving target at sea”:

Such a test could easily be arranged, using a large (carrier size) retired tanker or container ship, moving and maneuvering under remote control in a designated (to keep any ships and aircraft out of harm’s way) portion of the ocean. Other nations could use their photo satellites to observe. Either the DF-26C maneuverable warhead hits the target or it doesn’t.

As the article says, the U.S. Navy has to take seriously the potential threat the missile poses.

OH: Clinton, in newly revealed emails, discussed classified foreign policy matters, secretive ‘private’ comms channel with Israel.

A newly unearthed batch of heavily redacted, classified emails from Hillary Clinton’s personal email server revealed that the former secretary of state discussed establishing a “private, 100% off-the-record” back channel to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and that one of her top aides warned her that she was in “danger” of being “savaged by Jewish organizations, in the Jewish press and among the phalanx of neoconservative media” as a result of political machinations by “Bibi and the Jewish leadership.”

Paranoid, but not paranoid enough to protect her classified emails.

AIR-DELIVERED BIG GUNS: Two U.S. Army Chinook helicopters deliver M777 155 mm howitzers in an exercise held at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany.

LIZ SHELD’S MORNING BRIEF: Bus full of children set on fire and much, much more. “Italy’s interior ministry said in a statement that the driver had been previously caught driving while drunk and had sexually assaulted a minor.”

BLUE ON BLUE: Rep. Ilhan Omar’s ‘anti-Semitic tropes’ prompt Jewish New York Dem to apologize to constituents.

U.S. Rep. Max Rose, a Jewish New York Democrat in his first term in Congress, apologized to visibly frustrated constituents at a town hall in Staten Island on Tuesday for not “protecting them” from fellow freshman Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar’s repeated use of “anti-Semitic tropes.”

Rose’s comments came as Minnesota Democrats are seriously considering the prospect of supporting an unprecedented primary challenge against the 37-year-old Omar in 2020, following bipartisan condemnation of several of her remarks, according to officials and state representatives. Earlier this month, the House passed a bipartisan resolution condemning hate of all kinds in the wake of Omar’s comments. But Democrats kept Omar’s name out of the resolution, which several Republicans opposed as a watered-down, half-hearted effort.

Well, that’s exactly what it was. It was also Nancy Pelosi’s best attempt at keeping a lid on her fractured caucus.
