FROM A FRIEND ON FACEBOOK: “My biggest takeaway from the candidates in the Dem debates is there doesn’t seem to be any joy in any of them. They all seem to live in a perpetual state of anger, resentment and envy that absolutely poisons their lives. Those aren’t attractive qualities in political candidates. Say what you want about Trump but he rarely looks like he’s not having a good time. Optimism can be both attractive and contagious.”

DAVID HARSANYI: Sorry If You’re Offended, but Socialism Leads to Misery and Destitution.
Socialism is perhaps the only ideology that Americans are asked to judge solely based on its piddling “successes.” Don’t you dare mention Albania or Algeria or Angola or Burma or Congo or Cuba or Ethiopia or Laos or Somalia or Vietnam or Yemen or, well, any other of the dozens of other inconvenient places socialism has been tried. Not when there are a handful of Scandinavian countries operating generous welfare state programs propped up by underlying vibrant capitalism and natural resources.
Of course, socialism exists on a spectrum, and even if we accept that the Nordic social program experiments are the most benign iteration of collectivism, they are certainly not the only version. Pretending otherwise would be like saying, “The police state of Singapore is more successful than Denmark. Let’s give it a spin.”
It turns out, though, that the “Denmark is awesome!” talking point is only the second-most preposterous one used by socialists. It goes something like this: If you’re a fan of “roads, schools, libraries, and such,” although you may not even be aware of it, you are also a supporter of socialism.
To be fair, socialists will tell any lie to gain power.

THE MEDIA NARRATIVE IS ALWAYS A LIE: Barack’s ICE chief: Cages were Obama’s idea.
Former President Barack Obama’s top immigration chief in charge of removing illegal immigrants said that the “cages” Democrats have accused President Trump of housing children in were the brainchild of the Obama administration.
“I’ve been to that facility, where they talk about cages. That facility was built under President Obama under (Homeland Security) Secretary Jeh Johnson. I was there because I was there when it was built,” said Thomas Homan, who was Obama’s executive associate director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for nearly four years. . . .
Homan, who ran Obama’s successful deportation operation, ripped Democrats who question Trump immigration officials on the Obama-era idea.
He cited one Democratic chairman who asked a Trump official, “You still keeping kids in cages?”
Homan, at the conference hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies, said, “I would answer the question, ‘The kids are being house in the same facility built under the Obama administration.’ If you want to call them cages, call them cages. But if the left wants to call them cages and the Democrats want to call them cages then they have to accept the fact that they were built and funded in FY 2015.”
He said that the Border Patrol facilities where all illegals are initially kept “were not built to take care of children.” In fact, the recent surge of younger illegal immigrants is a new trend.
He said that there are no cages but chain-link fencing that separates kids from adults, done for safety. “It’s chain link dividers that keeps children separate from unrelated adults. It’s about protecting children,” he said.
It’s only about protecting children when there’s a Democrat in the White House. When it’s a Republican in the White House, it’s a concentration camp fence.

YOU DON’T SAY: New Warning Reveals Gmail’s Major Privacy Problem.
Privacy advocates at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have hit out at Gmail’s “confidential mode” warning that it is not secure or private.
It comes after Google turned confidential mode on by default for business users this week (June 25). The feature adds more control by allowing senders to create expiration dates and revoke previously sent messages. Meanwhile, confidential mode prevents recipients from forwarding, copying, printing, or downloading their content or attachments.
But experts have criticised the feature for not being as secure as it sounds. Calling the feature “confidential” mode “creates privacy and security expectations that the product just doesn’t meet,” says Gennie Gebhart, associate director of research at the EFF.
“Confidential mode emails are not end-to-end encrypted, for example, which means that Google can see the contents of your messages,” she says.
At the same time, Google can technically even store them indefinitely, regardless of whether you use the ‘expiration date’ feature, Gebhart points out.

The reality of Chinese law is that even if Chinese companies wish to act in good faith, they are compelled to cooperate with the military and intelligence services. Suffice it to say, there is no Fourth Amendment nor FISA Court in China.
After years of U.S. concerns, the Administration ultimately added Huawei to the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Entity List, which effectively blocks any U.S. companies from selling or transferring them U.S. technology. President Trump simultaneously issued an Executive Order that will likely lead to a banning of telecommunications equipment imports from Huawei, ZTE, and others posing a national security risk.
Unfortunately, this playbook is also all too familiar when dealing with the CCP—the ultimate power behind the throne of these two “National Champions.”
The long-held hope was that Western wealth and technology in Chinese people’s hands would eventually force Beijing to liberalize along something more like the Western model. Instead, Beijing is using Silicon Valley’s tools to create history’s most efficient police state.
It’s time to decouple.
LOREN THOMPSON: Five Sobering Lessons From Iran’s Downing Of America’s Most Capable Drone.
Here’s one:
Lesser military powers are acquiring potent air defenses. The weapon used by Iranian forces to down the Global Hawk was an indigenously-developed Khordad 3 surface-to-air missile. Khordad 3 is a road-mobile air defense system capable of attacking up to four targets simultaneously to ranges of 50 miles and altitudes of 90,000 feet—higher than any U.S. military aircraft flies. The fact that a country as isolated as Iran could develop such a system speaks to the global proliferation of anti-aircraft technology. The Russian S-400 air defense system that China began testing last year and Turkey will soon field is far more capable, and a threat to any aircraft within 200 miles that is not stealthy.
I’m reminded a bit of the A-10, which was designed in the ’70s to rip open Soviet tanks. It’s a brilliant plane, but the A-10 is overkill for taking out jihadi Land Cruisers, yet isn’t survivable in a modern A2/AD environment. Stealth is rapidly becoming the baseline trim for dealing with even second-rate adversaries.

PUNCH BACK TWICE AS HARD: Yale Forced To Settle Bizarre Due Process Rape Case.
This capitulation comes on the heals of a new precedent-setting ruling from a federal judge in Tennessee that private universities, just like public ones, must provide due process protections to students accused of sexual assault, notes public interest law professor John Banzhaf.
This bizarre and outrageous Yale case – in which an administrator reportedly first helped bring the charges and then chaired the disciplinary hearing which found him guilty, another administrator allegedly mislead the woman into thinking that Montague was a serial rapist, and the university investigated him for stuffing a pizza plate down a woman’s shirt as “sexual harassment” – is only the latest example where legal action was effective in challenging practices which were claimed to violate a student’s due process rights.
The Tennessee ruling creates a a very important legal precedent, says Banzhaf, because courts in the past generally rejected student challenges, based upon fairness arguments, to findings by colleges that they committed rape, and only began ruling for the students when they began arguing that the campus hearings violated due process.
But due process, prior to this Tennessee decision, was applied only to state colleges and universities, not to the much larger number of institutions of higher education which were private, explains Banzhaf.
