KITTEN’S GOT CLAWS: TaxProf Paul Caron reports that the ABA has found Louisville Law School out of compliance with its accreditation standards. The ABA has been a lot busier enforcing its standards in the last few years, but this latest move is especially notable. First, Louisville is not one of the usual suspects. Founded in 1846, Louisville is the oldest law school in Kentucky and one of the oldest in the country. It’s named after the great Justice Louis Brandeis and is a top-100 law school. Worse yet, Louisville has been dinged under ABA Standard 202, because “its current financial condition” may have “a negative and material effect” on the school’s ability to operate. YIKES! If the flood waters have reached Louisville, there’s likely an awful lot of law schools in financial trouble. On a related topic, Fixing Law Schools explains how this has happened and what law schools should do about it. Hint: the answer ISN’T higher tuition or more debt.

HUFFPO: Republican Group Hits Donald Trump With Scathing New Billboard Campaign. “A conservative group is targeting House Republicans with a digital billboard campaign that is heavily critical of President Donald Trump.”

“Conservative.”

The big names behind the group are Bill Kristol, Mona Charen, Linda Chavez, Sarah Longwell, and Andy Zwick. Or as the group’s Wikipedia page notes, “Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin calls the ads ‘devastating’ to Trump’s credibility.”

Someone’s credibility is devastated, that’s for sure.

BILL DE BLASIO SEEMS DETERMINED TO RETURN NEW YORK TO THE DEATH WISH ERA: A 13-year-old has been arrested in the fatal stabbing of a Barnard student, source says.

Police officials and de Blasio faced questions Thursday about the pattern of crimes in and around the park. The NYPD had identified issues and implemented different strategies to combat the problem, Harrison said. The department also is stepping up patrols in and around the park and at the nearby schools, including Barnard.

“The idea that a college freshman at Barnard was murdered in cold blood is absolutely not only painful to me as a parent, it’s terrifying to think that that could happen anywhere,” de Blasio said at the news conference.

“It’s unbelievable to me that that could happen here, next to one of our great college campuses,” he added. “It’s an unacceptable reality.”

Curiously, it’s becoming increasingly “believable” that it could happen in de Blasio’s New York.

UNEXPECTEDLY: House Judiciary Committee Votes to Impeach Trump. “The articles of impeachment will move to the full House, with two days to consider them. The House of Representatives is likely to impeach Trump on partisan lines next week.”

CRIME IN THE BIG APPLE:  According to this, murder is up 8.7% in New York City this year.  That’s a lot.  Robbery, felony assault, “shooting incidents,” and “housing crime” are also up.  But rape, burglary, grand larceny, auto theft and “transit crime” are down, so the overall crime rate is said to be down. I wonder how much of this is the failure to report (or the failure to record reports of) more minor crimes.   I’ve written about some of my worries on the topic of criminal law enforcement here.  I worry a lot ….

MEANWHILE, BACK IN UKRAINE: A Ukrainian T-64 tank participates in a combat training exercise at Yavoriv, Ukraine. In November 130 U.S. soldiers deployed to Ukraine as advisers at the joint multi-national training center in Yavoriv. This is not hearsay, this is fact.

CHRISTIAN TOTO: Conservatives Face Moment of Truth in Culture Wars. “Will Heartland audiences make ‘No Safe Spaces,’ ‘Richard Jewell’ box office hits? Here’s why that matters.”

Good stuff from Christian as usual.
