OPEN THREAD: In all of eternity, there is only one of today’s open thread. Make this your masterpiece.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER, BUT BETTER NEVER LATE: Covington Diocese Makes Full Apology To Nicholas Sandmann, All Covington High Boys.

Possibly related: Nicholas Sandmann’s family hires ‘attorney for the damned’ specializing in libel, slander. “Other notable clients include the family of JonBenet Ramsey, who were suspects in the child pageant queen’s murder, and Richard Jewell, a Centennial Olympic Park guard misidentified as having bombed his workplace in 1996.”

UPDATE: Seen on Facebook:

WELL, YES: “It just beggars belief that the same liberals who fret about ‘micro-aggressions’ for 20-somethings were able to see 16-year-olds absorbing the worst racist garbage from religious bigots… and then express the desire to punch the kids in the face. How did this grotesque inversion of the truth become the central narrative for what seemed to be the entire class of elite journalists on Twitter?”

Well, it helps that the “elite journalists” are mostly trash. Though it’s a fair question whether a society that allows so many awful people to occupy such positions will able to function for long as a democracy.

SHADOW WAR WITH RUSSIA IN VENEZUELA?: Why not? The Kremlin loves shadow wars.

Private military contractors who do secret missions for Russia flew into Venezuela in the past few days to beef up security for President Nicolas Maduro in the face of U.S.-backed opposition protests, according to two people close to them.

A third source close to the Russian contractors also told Reuters there was a contingent of them in Venezuela, but could not say when they arrived or what their role was.

Russia, which has backed Maduro’s socialist government to the tune of billions of dollars, this week promised to stand by him after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself president with Washington’s endorsement.

The article says the contractors first flew to Cuba then took commercial flights to Venezuela.

Looks like a KGB colonel’s chess move. Except this is life and death, not chess.

RELATED: My latest Creators Syndicate column which discusses the Venezuelan opposition’s noticeably improved ability to coordinate political actions. Did the CIA/State Department help facilitate the improvement? Far too rash a thought.

DOWNSIDES: Making Community College ‘Free’ Will Harm Serious Students. “Community college already is dirt cheap, at $46 a credit. Making it free will only assure that people who aren’t particularly serious about getting an education will take up space in sought-after classes, thus making it tougher for others to get into their preferred classes. This sounds harsh, but people unwilling to invest $1,100 a year in their own education perhaps ought to find something else to do. There is nothing like spending one’s own money to force people to take the coursework seriously.”
