OPEN THREAD: Y’all have fun.

ONE REASON THAT EUROPE MOCKS AMERICAN CHEESES IS THAT THEY’VE NEVER HAD ANY:

It doesn’t help that it’s hugely expensive to get US cheese across the pond. There are some massive tariffs on US cheese – currently set by the EU and the UK, depending on the type of cheese – to come into the UK.

“It’s up to £60 ($73) a kilogramme,” says Mr McGuigan. “If you’re trying to sell to a British customer, you’re saying, ‘we have this cheese that’s amazing – it’s £60.’ You can see a lot of shoppers going, ‘hmm I’m not sure.'”

“They are good cheeses. But there are some good cheeses [from elsewhere] which are half price.”

Cheddar, for example, is subject to a 167.10 euro ($187.72) per 100kg tariff, with Colby at 151 euro ($166.92) per 100kg.

Trying to find US cheeses in London, for people to taste test it for this article, proved impossible. It’s usually only brought in for special occasions, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is when Ms Michelson buys it in for her world-renowned cheese stores.

She had also intended to import some for Independence Day this year, but paperwork held up the consignment, which currently comes via Paris.

Trump should make an issue of this, perhaps negotiating a lowered tariff as part of a deal with post-Brexit Britain. They’d appreciate it in Wisconsin. And nowadays there are a lot of really first-class American cheeses.

MEDIA JUST MAKING STUFF UP: Here’s ABC News Chief Political Analyst Matthew Dowd:

And here is some actual data. Netanyahu’s favorability/unfavorability rating among Jewish Americans: 45 percent favorable/38 percent unfavorable. This isn’t even the same universe as “eighty percent opposed.”

As for Trump, the most recent poll shows American Jewish disapproval at 69%. Note that this is “disapproval,” not “opposition,” though at least 69 percent is in the same general galaxy as 80%. (Note that Jews being disproportionately urban, coastal, irreligious, and concentrated in blue states demographically one would expect them to be significantly less approving of Trump than the population as a whole, Jewishness aside).

Anyway, what does it tell you when a “big 3” network’s chief political analyst just feels free to make things up that are contrary to easily obtainable data?

BREAKING: AT LEAST 5 DEAD, 21 PEOPLE REPORTEDLY INJURED IN MIDLAND-ODESSA AREA OF TEXAS.

UPDATE: The Odessa-area CBS affiliate reports that “The City of Midland tells CBS7 that authorities have taken a suspect into custody at the Cinergy [movie theater] of Midland,” adding that “From the City of Odessa: 20 injuries have been reported in connection to the shooting.”

CNN reports that “Police in Midland said officers are looking for two shooters in two separate vehicles, a gold/white small Toyota truck and a US Postal Service van.”

As always, early reports are likely to be contradictory and/or inaccurate. Rick Moran will be updating the story as it develops at PJM, at the link atop this post.

MORE: “The mayor of Odessa, Tx tells Fox News that there was only one shooter who has reportedly been shot and killed in a confrontation with police. A hospital spokesman told Fox that 6 people had been admitted with gun shot wounds and 3 are critical,” Moran adds in an update.

UPDATE (7:49 eastern): “Police say five people are dead, 21 more injured in the shootings. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s,” Moran adds in his latest update.

OTHER THAN PRETTY MUCH EVERYBODY, WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN THIS DEVELOPMENT? Men now avoid women at work – another sign we’re being punished for #MeToo:

Which makes you wonder why so many men are afraid to interact with women at work?

The answer to that question, perhaps, is that a lot of men aren’t so much afraid of being accused of anything as they are they are angry that #MeToo ever happened. They’re angry that they’ve been made to think about their behavior, made to interrogate power dynamics they always took for granted, and they are punishing women for it by refusing to interact with them.

It’s worth noting, I think, that the Harvard Business Review article previewing the study’s 2019 results is headlined The #MeToo Backlash. You see that phrase a lot and that framing subtly implies that #MeToo went too far, that a backlash is only natural. It’s yet another form of victim-blaming; another way to quietly put women back in their place.

As Glenn has written, “you could write a strong argument for patriarchy using only the things feminists say about the fragility of women.”

NEWS YOU CAN USE: The GOAT, Roger Simon’s Latest Novel, Goes on Sale Sept. 1. As Paula Bolyard writes in her review:

This is the first book that Roger has self-published. (He explained his reasons here.) As conservatives, we should all applaud — and support — such efforts. Self-publishing puts authors in the driver’s seat, freeing them from the whims of corporate book publishers and Big Tech control freaks. And while I’d encourage you to buy Roger’s book for that reason alone, I assure you it won’t be a fully altruistic effort on your part — I’m confident you’ll enjoy the book as much as I did. Believe me, you won’t be able to put it down.
