RICHARD FERNANDEZ ON the populist right’s worldwide victories:

IT’S ONE WAY FOR A FRESHMAN SENATOR TO GET ATTENTION FOR HIMSELF, BUT NOT A GOOD WAY: Senator Josh Hawley is becoming a first-class demagogue.

As Richard Fernandez has written, “The real crisis of American governance isn’t that Trump is some evil genius. It is what a bunch of mediocrities the elite have turned out to be.”
THE 21ST CENTURY IS NOT TURNING OUT AS I’D HOPED: Doctors raise alarm about ancient HTLV-1 virus: ‘Prevalence is off the charts’ in Australia. “HTLV-1 — an ancient virus whose DNA can be found in 1,500-year-old Andean mummies — can spread from mother to child, particularly through breastfeeding; between sexual partners, through unprotected sex; and by blood contact, such as through transfusions. Because it can be transmitted through sex, it’s considered a sexually transmitted infection, or STI. The virus is associated with myriad serious health problems, such as diseases of the nervous system and a lung-damaging condition called bronchiectasis, and it weakens the immune system. HTLV-1 is sometimes called a cousin of the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV.”
HIV used to be called HTLV-III.
BYRON YORK: As Barr mulls declassification, a familiar tune from critics.
In February 2018, the House Intelligence Committee released the so-called Nunes memo. In four pages, the document, from the committee’s then-chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, revealed much of what the public knows today about the FBI’s reliance on the Steele dossier in pursuing since-discredited allegations that the Trump campaign and Russia conspired to fix the 2016 election. Specifically, it revealed that the FBI included unverified material from the dossier in applications to a secret spy court to win a warrant to wiretap Trump foreign policy volunteer adviser Carter Page.
All that was classified. To release it, the committee appealed to President Trump, who made a declassification order. That is the only way Americans know about the Page warrant. From that knowledge came later revelations about the FBI’s use of confidential informants and undercover agents to get information on Trump campaign figures.
It is good that the public knows such things, just as it is good that the public knows what is in the Mueller report. But in the days before the Nunes memo was declassified, many of the nation’s top current and former intelligence officials, members of Congress, and analysts in the press warned that declassification would do grave damage to American national security.
It didn’t happen.
Now, some of the same people are issuing somber warnings of the damage that will be done if Attorney General William Barr declassifies documents showing what else the nation’s law enforcement and intelligence agencies did in the 2016 Trump investigation.
Why, it’s almost as though classification had become little more than a scam to protect powerful interests.
TO ASK THE QUESTION IS TO ANSWER IT: Ian Bremmer Pushes Fake News On Twitter. Will Liberals Care? “This is a good lesson for those who lecture us that experts and fact-loving professionals should have more control over what social media is distributed. Supposedly Bremmer is one of these people, and he just pushed a bunch of fake garbage on social media. I won’t hold my breath for the outraged reaction from the left. It’s always somehow different when they do it.”
VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Colluders, Obstructionists, Leakers, and Other Projectionists.
How ironic that Russian “collusion” was used as a preemptive charge from those who actually had colluded with Russians for all sorts for financial and careerist advantages.

Imagine the cries of outrage from Representatives Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) had Trump inadvertently blurted out to the world that he was willing to warp U.S. security interests to fit his own reelection agenda. (Remember: “This is my last election . . . After my election, I have more flexibility.”) Such a stealthy quid pro quo certainly would have been the crown jewel of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report.
The locus classicus of Russian collusion, however, is Hillary Clinton’s effort in 2016. The facts are not in dispute. Using the three firewalls of the Democratic National Committee, the Perkins Coie law firm, and Glenn Simpson’s Fusion GPS, the Clinton campaign paid a foreign national, British subject Christopher Steele, to compile a smear dossier against Clinton’s then-opponent, Donald J. Trump.

THIS WEEK IN MY PERSONAL HISTORY: Three years ago this week I received a lot more death threats than usual.
You wouldn’t think that it’s dangerous to assert that Title IX, which was passed in 1972, does not purport to require schools to take any particular approach to the issue of transgender bathroom assignment. But I guess it is. Here is my legal brief on the topic. As you’ll see, it really is a legal argument. There really is such a thing as law, and it doesn’t automatically say what Progressives want it to say.
In fairness, I should point out that I got a lot more messages from supporters than from opponents. It’s just that the opponents’ messages were a bit more attention grabbing.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Colluders, Obstructionists, Leakers, and Other Projectionists.
Before the defeat of Hillary Clinton, the idea that the Russians or anyone else could warp or tamper with our elections in any serious manner was laughed off by President Obama. “There is no serious person out there who would suggest that you could even rig America’s elections,” Obama said in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election.
Obama was anxious that the sure-to-be-sore-loser Trump would not blame his defeat on voting impropriety in a fashion that might call into question Clinton’s victory. After Clinton’s stunning defeat, Russian “collusion”—thanks initially to efforts by Obama holdover Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to go after Michael Flynn and the successful attempts of the CIA and FBI to seed the bogus Steele dossier among the government elite—became a club to destroy the incoming Trump Administration.
How ironic that Russian “collusion” was used as a preemptive charge from those who actually had colluded with Russians for all sorts for financial and careerist advantages.
As a general rule, the left accuses its opponents of doing what the Left is already doing.
