HARSH, BUT FAIR:

HOW DARE THEY MARGINALIZE HER EXPRESSION OF HER CULTURE: Whitney Cummings Claims She Was Reported to Human Resources for Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to Intern. The vast majority of Americans (even those who aren’t religious) celebrate Christmas. That means that wishing people Merry Christmas is normal. Leftists don’t like the very concept of normal, which is why they’re always trying to marginalize and undercut such expressions. Which is why saying “Merry Christmas” is treated as oppression, while finding someone’s Greta Thunberg pin offensive is . . . also oppression. It’s oikophobia, straight up.

VOGUE EDITORS SHOW HOW ALARMINGLY OUT OF TOUCH THEY ARE, GET ROASTED ONLINE:

For a magazine that pushes climate change activists as saints, Vogue doesn’t seem all that concerned with the issue.

In an article published last week that has been making the rounds on social media recently, the British Vote editors explained where they would be spending their upcoming holidays. Their responses brought to mind the snobbery and elitism of “Frasier” characters.

Sarah Harris, deputy editor and fashion features director, for example, said she will be spending her holidays in the Cayman Islands “at the newly opened Palm Heights,” at a cost of $400+ per night. She then claimed to be “a really light packer, even for a two-week holiday,” before saying she planned to “pack a bikini for every day since they take up almost no room in a suitcase.” One might not take up much room, but 14 certainly would.

To coin an Instaphrase, I’ll believe global warming is a crisis, when the people who tell me it’s a crisis start to act like it’s a crisis themselves. Oh, and I don’t want to hear another word about Glenn Reynolds’ carbon footprint.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: The Era of ‘Good’ Fascism?

If and when fascism comes to America, it will not arrive with jackboots, stiff arms, and military uniforms. The attempt to suppress political opposition in anti-constitutional fashion, to regiment the economy by denying constitutionally protected freedoms, and the efforts to change the Constitution to reflect political utility, will come under the auspices of “equality,” “fairness,” “saving the planet,” and “social justice”—as a way to combat “climate change,” “racism,” “homophobia,” and “sexism.”

The old Confederate idea of state nullification of federal law—the great bane of a century of civil rights movements—is now a progressive trademark.

Over 550 sanctuary jurisdictions have announced that federal immigration law simply does not apply in full within their confines. Because there were no federal consequences when states simply ignored federal immigration legislation, why would not local jurisdictions—such as an increasing number of counties in Virginia—simply renounce state laws in matters of gun control?

It wouldn’t be the first time that the era of “good fascism” descended upon America.

AIN’T NO SUNSHINE: Seattle Copes with Darkest Day on Record. “Seattle’s darkest day, that time I almost got fired over a weather forecast, and the threat of the nation being overrun by four million Greta Thunbergs.”

SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRAT FACING BACKLASH AFTER ARMY, NAVY PERSONNEL CLEARED OF ‘WHITE POWER’ HAND-SIGNAL ALLEGATIONS:

A Democratic state lawmaker from South Carolina was facing backlash Saturday from critics who accused her of going silent after previously accusing Army and Navy personnel of being “cruel and disrespectful” at last weekend’s Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia.

In a since-deleted tweet, state Rep. Mandy Powers Norrell wrote, “Three separate candidates making the white power symbol on television. Wonder what the culture is like for the cadet in the front? There’s no excuse and he and other minorities there shouldn’t have to deal with such a cruel and disrespectful environment.”

But since her tweet appeared, U.S. Military Academy cadets and U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen have been cleared of wrongdoing in separate military investigations.

Meanwhile, someone may be projecting:

So, not “a home run” for the military, I guess.

YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BLOG: Democratic Presidential Clown Car Update for December 23, 2019. “Another debate down (like the ratings), Buttigieg brings all the swells to the crystal wine bar, Bloomberg carpet bombs the airwaves with money, and Tom Steyer is the Cats of candidates.”

Me-OW!

HARSH, BUT FAIR:

If you think of it as Schrodinger’s Impeachment, then it all makes sense, except not really.

TRUMP EXPECTED TO SIGN “BAN THE BOX” LEGISLATION: Alas, the law of unintended consequences is likely to step in here. A number of empirical studies have found that when the law makes it difficult to ask applicants for low-skilled jobs about their criminal records, employers sometimes resort to stereotypes and decline to hire young African American males. I discussed those studies in Part IX of this article about disparate impact liability. It’s a pretty long article, but I hope it will be worth your time if you have any kind of interest in employment discrimination law (one of our most messed up areas of the law).

NOT SO BRIGHT: Boston has changed the name of Dudley Square in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood to Nubian Square. Why? Some people were concerned that Gov. Thomas Dudley (1576-1653) had “something” to do with slavery. In fact, there is no evidence Dudley owned any slaves and, according to the Boston Globe, “his role in the promotion of slavery is somewhat murky.” On the other hand, as Jeff Jacoby points out, the various ancient Nubian kingdoms honored by the square’s new name were centers for slavery. Slaves were a vital part of their economy; they were the kingdoms’ main export.

My late mother was a New Englander and tended to think of New Englanders as better educated than the rest of the country. (We all have our biases.) She must not have been thinking of Boston.
