LIES, DAMNED LIES, AND COMMUNIST STATISTICS: An under-the-radar way to measure economic growth in China is painting a bleak picture.
China’s true pace of economic growth is always hard to decipher, but the country’s lagging diesel demand could be a sign that the world’s second-largest economy is in a much more dire state than official numbers indicate.
Diesel demand in China fell 14% and 19% in March and April, respectively, reaching levels not seen in a decade, according to data compiled by Wells Fargo. Monthly demand has also been falling every month since December 2017, the data shows [sic].
“We believe the accelerating decline is most likely tied to economic factors and the effects of the tariff ‘war’ with the U.S. (lifted demand earlier in 2019 to ‘beat’ the tariffs, but now falling),” Wells Fargo energy analyst Roger Read said in a note Monday. “If one wants to worry, that is where to focus most closely in our view.”
China said in April its economy grew by 6.4% in the first quarter of 2019. However, global investors and economists have been skeptical of China’s official economic figures for years as they believe they are overstated.
You can’t trust anything out of Beijing.
I read this threat as a sign of desperation, not strength. Anyone “smart” enough to try to get rich cornering the market for a natural resource ought to have a long talk with the Hunt brothers. In the long run, it never works, as high prices cause people to find substitutes or new sources.
COCAINE MITCH PLAYS FOR KEEPS: Mitch McConnell’s Supreme Court Opinion Hasn’t Changed.
As McConnell noted, [in 2016] the Senate had been elected, too — and more recently, if that matters — and it chose to use its power to advance its goals. It didn’t want Obama’s nominees, and it didn’t have to accept them. Quite why McConnell couldn’t say just that, I don’t know.
But he didn’t say that, alas. Rather, he said that a delay is imperative in such cases as a vacancy arises during a presidential election year in which the Senate and the White House are run by different parties. Now, he is saying that there is no need for a delay in such cases as a vacancy arises during a presidential election year in which the Senate and the White House are run by the same party. These positions are absolutely compatible, and one does not have to like them to acknowledge that.

CHILLING: A District Court judge in England has allowed a private prosecution of Boris Johnson for the medieval crime of “misconduct in public office” to go forward, on the allegation that he lied during the Brexit Referendum.
Obviously, all political statements henceforth should be cleared with a competent body empowered to make determinations on matters of truth or falsehood. We could call it the Ministry of Truth. Nor should any mere politician head such a body. No sir! It should be headed by someone anyone could feel comfortable with, or love, like a family member. A big brother if you will.

SARAH HOYT’S SHOCKED FACE COULD NOT BE REACHED FOR COMMENT: It’s Not Your Imagination: The Journalists Writing About Antifa Are Often Their Cheerleaders.
Antifa often receives media coverage that is neutral or even favorable, with its members’ violence either being ignored by reporters or vaguely explained away as a product of right-wing provocation. What’s more, anecdotal evidence has suggested that many of the mainstream reporters who are most active in covering Antifa also tend to enthusiastically amplify Antifa’s claims on social media.
In October 2018, my research partner and I decided to investigate the truth of this impression by using a mix of network mapping and linguistic analysis to see which prominent journalists who covered Antifa also were closely connected to leading Antifa figures on social media. We then inspected the Antifa-related stories these journalists had written.
We created a data set of 58,254 Antifa or Antifa-associated Twitter accounts based on the follows of 16 verified Antifa seed accounts. Using a software tool that analyzed the number and nature of connections associated with each individual account, we winnowed the 58,254 Antifa or Antifa-associated Twitter accounts down to 962 accounts. This represents a core group of Twitter users who are connected in overlapping ways to the most influential and widely followed Antifa figures. Of these 962 accounts, 22 were found to be verified Twitter accounts of journalists—of which 15 were journalists who work regularly with national-level news outlets.
None of this is exactly surprising, but the research involved here makes Eoin Lenihan’s piece well worth your time.
SO MUCH WINNING: The Media Is Complaining That Their Tired Old Tricks No Longer Work!
HMM: Where’s Joe? Biden’s campaign pace called into question.
After launching his Democratic presidential campaign in late April, the former vice president came out of the gate with a busy schedule, holding events in all four of the states that kick-off the primary and caucus calendar, as well as stops in California. And Biden started and closed that campaign swing with speeches in his native Pennsylvania, which is also a crucial general election battleground state.
But Biden hasn’t held a public campaign event since his large kick-off rally in Philadelphia on Saturday, May 18. Since then, he’s headlined a top dollar fundraiser in Nashville, Tennessee and two more in Florida.
And while a bunch of his rivals for the 2020 Democratic nomination are stumping this holiday weekend, Biden’s off the trail.
“Joe Biden has no public events scheduled,” read a release from his campaign.
Plus: Joe Biden’s Early Campaign Strategy Doesn’t Involve Much Campaigning.
The former vice-president is doing far fewer public events than most of his competitors in the crowded Democratic field. That’s especially evident this holiday weekend, when Elizabeth Warren is getting coffee with voters, Bernie Sanders is hitting up Memorial Day cookouts, and Kirsten Gillibrand is making 11 public appearances in Iowa — the same number of events Biden has held since launching his campaign.
But this makes sense for Biden, his team tells the Washington Post, because he simply doesn’t have to work as hard.
“He doesn’t have to work as hard” isn’t an exactly inspiring message.
PUNCH BACK TWICE AS HARD: University gets legal warning for enforcing speech rules against conservatives but not socialists.
THOSE WHO ARE IGNORANT OF HISTORY, ETC. ETC.: People who follow things like curriculum development in America’s elementary and secondary schools, as well as its colleges and universities, have warned for decades about the declining quality of history courses. Sadly, that’s not an issue with much mass impact.
But John Daniel Davidson has some data that brings home in a vivid manner the results of the decline over time — far fewer Americans are visiting civil war battlefields, which means they aren’t thinking and talking about the issues that produced that conflict at the heart of the American experience.
“The danger here is not just that Civil War battlefields will eventually lie fallow for lack of visitors, but that we will unlearn the painful lessons of our past. To some extent, we’ve already started down that path,” Davidson writes. Think of the growing number of racially segregated programs and facilities on elite campuses. Trust me, nothing good will come of this trend.
