PAULA BOLYARD: Recovering from Labor.

I didn’t have a choice about joining a union when I was hired by CBS and then ABC. They told me that if I wanted to work, I had to pay dues to AFTRA (the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists). “I’m not an ‘artist’!” I complained. “I don’t want to pay a middleman, and I don’t want some actor setting my working conditions.”

“Too bad,” was the answer. “This is a union shop.”

Today, 28 states no longer force workers to join unions. Last year, the Supreme Court declared that unions forcing government workers to pay dues is unconstitutional. After that, hundreds of thousands of workers stopped paying union dues. Good. Unions tend to be enemies of workplace innovation and individual choice.

Also, some of their leaders are thieves.

Some?

HMM: MRI, CT scan use continues to rise, in spite of health risks. “Despite a push to reduce the use of medical scans and limit exposure to radiation, researchers say there has been a reacceleration of imaging use.”

So it’s a mixed bag. When our daughter was younger, she had a chronic undiagnosed sinus infection. We strongly suspected it — it was showing up in her behavior as well as her symptoms, she seemed depressed and not herself — but her idiot pediatrician diagnosed her withe “Eeyore Personality.” No, really. We took her to the top ENT in town, he looked up her nose and then — pretty clearly just humoring us — put her in his fancy new head CT scan machine. He did a scan, did a double-take at the results, and said “we’re gonna have to do something about this.” A minor balloon-surgery procedure later and she was fine.

We got rid of the pediatrician.

DAVID HARSANYI: Dems Propose First Gun Grab Since Lexington And Concord.

As I recall, Lexington and Concord didn’t go quite as planned for the would-be gun-grabbers:

What Democrats propose can be more accurately described as “the first American gun confiscation effort since Lexington and Concord,” or some variation on that theme. Although tax dollars will be meted out in an effort to incentivize volunteers, the policy is to confiscate AR-15s, the vast majority of which have been legally purchased by Americans who have undergone background checks and never used a gun for a criminal purpose.

The “mandatory gun buyback” exemplifies the impracticality and absurdity of do-somethingism (although Biden’s proposal to ban “magazines that hold bullets”—so most guns—is also a contender!). Democrats are ready to instantaneously turn millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens into criminals overnight for refusing to adhere to a law that retroactively transformed the exercise of a constitutional right into criminality.

And they do it without any evidence that it would curtail rare mass shootings or save lives.

As I wrote last week, “mandatory buy-back” is just newspeak for “confiscation with a little sweetener.”

WALMART COMPETITOR RURAL KING IS NOT BACKING OFF FROM THE GUN BUSINESS.

HARSH, BUT FAIR.

JOURNALISM: Bloomberg News Yet Again Screws Up Major Story and Doubles Down on Stupid. “President Trump often characterizes the media as the enemy of the people. It is really hard to say he is wrong in the case of Bloomberg. It has gotten multiple major stories demonstrably, harmed the reputations of American companies, cost a man his job, and stands by its demonstrably wrong reporting.Bloomberg is harming other news outlets with its behavior.”

THIS MATTIS BOOK ISN’T TURNING OUT AS DEMOCRATS HAD HOPED: In new book, Mattis takes shots at the president (but not that one). “Mattis in the volume offers praise for George H.W. Bush for his handling of the first Gulf War, blames the advisers of George W. Bush for strategic errors in Iraq, and lashes out at Barack Obama for not taking foreign security threats seriously.”

BRITAIN: Why Remoaners are so terrified of a General Election: These anti-democrats fear the judgement of the people. And they’re right to fear it. “What a momentous self-own. They have literally traipsed through the streets saying ‘Britain is a dictatorship’ and ‘Boris has stolen our democracy’. Now, Boris hasn’t only disproven this claptrap (dictators don’t usually suggest holding an election). He has also helped to expose the fact that if anyone is agitated and even disgusted by the idea of democracy right now, it isn’t the imaginary jackbooted generals of Downing Street – it’s the pseudo-democratic Remainer elite.”

DOES ELIZABETH WARREN EVEN REMEMBER WRITING THIS BOOK? It was titled “The Two-Income Trap” and it argued, perhaps unknowingly, for the proposition that progressive taxes harm two-income families. Somebody should ask the candidate about this.
