TRUMP RECOGNIZES JUAN GUAIDO AS THE INTERIM LEADER OF VENEZUELA, JUST MINUTES AFTER THE OPPOSITION LEADER DECLARED HIMSELF THE HEAD OF STATE. It’s the U.S.’s most provocative move yet against Nicolas Maduro, Bloomberg News tweets.

DITTO FOR WAXING AND CRABS: HPV vaccine benefits women who don’t get it, study says. “A new study of HPV prevalence and vaccination suggests that incidence of HPV is declining even for unvaccinated women because the risk of contracting it is going down.”

HMM: “A Tectonic Shift In China’s Economy Has Largely Gone Unnoticed By Investors.

Now it is the Wall Street’s Journal’s turn to bring attention to this topic, calling it a “tectonic shift” in China’s economy, which has largely gone unnoticed by investors, and which is “quietly beginning to upend the global financial system.”

A key driver behind China’s declining current account is that after having long been the world’s heavyweight saver and a huge buyer of foreign assets like Treasurys, the world’s most populous nation is now a big spender, and in early 2018, China got more of its growth from consumption than the U.S., the global king of consumer spending where some 70% of economic growth is due to consumer spending. And as China’s increasingly wealthy population spends more at home and abroad, its total trade surplus with the rest of the world has shriveled to a fraction of its former size.

In other words, China is rapidly becoming the next US.

If they’re us, who’s going to finance Washington’s spending addiction?

JOURNALISM:

Yeah, the second one is parody, but is it really?

SOHRAB AMARI: Dear Covington boys: Everyone failed you.

I wish I could offer a word of reassurance amid your troubles. But all I can say is that everyone failed you. The elite media failed its duty to truth and fairness. Your school failed you. Your diocese failed you. Your Church failed you, with some of the nation’s most visible Catholics, lay and clerical, rushing to join the pile-on. America failed you.

Start with the media. If you have taken a high-school journalism class, you have heard that reporters are exacting with facts. That they are supposed to seek comment from people they criticise. “Even if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out,” runs an old journalistic maxim. These standards are especially pertinent when stories involve children.

Well, I’m sorry to say that many “real”, adult journalists don’t follow these professional rules anymore, including and especially at the prestigious outlets that went after you.

Read the whole thing. But not everyone failed them.

IT WAS NECESSARY TO DESTROY THE CLIMATE IN ORDER TO SAVE IT: Record private jet flights into Davos as leaders arrive for climate talk.

Wait until the establishment left discovers telecommuting. In the meantime, as Glenn likes to say, I’d be more inclined to take global warming seriously, when the people who tell me it’s a crisis start to act like it’s a crisis themselves.

IF IT WASN’T FOR DOUBLE STANDARDS, THEY’D HAVE NONE AT ALL: You know the stereotypical British leftie: All refugees must be accepted because borders are racist. And we have some sort of historical Original Sin to pay for, so somehow it’s our moral responsibility to ship cubic money elsewhere. Not to mention that taking pride in your nation’s history is racist, of course.

But when UK-based consumer electronics manufacturer Dyson announced it was moving its HQ to Singapore, the UK left has gone into melt-down mode, decrying the loss of prestige that Britain will face:

“Before Dyson, so the story went, we were terrific at inventing bright ideas but rubbish at turning those ideas into profitable businesses. Brits would have the lightbulb moment, but when it came to manufacturing the actual bulbs, that work – and profit – would be shipped far away. Then along came James Dyson, hailed by successive governments, who proved it didn’t have to be that way. A British idea produced a British business.”

Waitaminnit, what? Suddenly “business” and “profitability” and “national pride” are good things?
Who knew?

THIS IS A REASON FOR PESSIMISM: It’s one thing to have a small number of people around the country who are totally out of their minds with hatred. It was ever thus. It’s another thing when they get elected to Congress, and the media write puff pieces about them.

TO BE FAIR, HE GETS A PASS FOR EVERYTHING: Media give Obama a pass for anti-black result of his Title IX policies.

When the Trump administration said it plans to roll back its predecessor’s guidance on school discipline and disparate impact, the Obama administration’s education secretaries publicly denounced it for ignoring “our most vulnerable and underserved students.”

Those would be students of color and those with disabilities, who are “disproportionately affected by harsh and often unnecessary exclusionary discipline practices,” wrote Arne Duncan and John B. King.

They have been suspiciously silent about the disparate impact on black men from another Obama policy, one that the Trump administration is also rolling back: sexual misconduct rules.

Erika Sanzi, senior visiting fellow at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, writes in RealClearEducation that “Obama loyalists are trying to have it both ways” by criticizing both rollbacks.

“And truth be told, it’s easy for them to do that that when almost no one in the media, including reporters, forces them to explain the inconsistency and yes, blatant hypocrisy, of their position,” Sanzi writes.

Well, you know how it works:
