OPEN THREAD: Celebrate Wednesday.

MARK WHITTINGTON: How The Green New Deal Would End American Space Travel. “The so-called Green New Deal is the sort of thing that might have been dreamed up in a college dorm after the bong pipe has been passed around too often.”

CODE PINK, REP. OMAR ATTACK ELLIOT ABRAMS ON U.S. PLANS FOR VENEZUELA:

This kind of fringe rhetoric wasn’t over once the Code Pink protesters were removed. Rep. Ilhan Omar, who apologized for using anti-Semitic language this week, used her five minutes to attack “Mr. Adams” as a liar who had been involved in the “Iran-Cortra” affair. Omar is literally reading these talking points from a sheet of paper and still can’t seem to manage it.

After refusing to let Abrams respond to her attack, she then suggested that Abrams believed an infamous massacre by Salvadoran soldiers in 1981 was a “glorious achievement.” Abrams pointed out that the achievement he believes was worthwhile was that El Salvador became a democracy. Omar then pressed him on whether he would back a genocide in Venezuela. Abrams refused to answer what he considered an absurd question and she eventually settled on the less extreme, “Will you make sure that human rights are not violated and that we uphold international and human rights?” Abrams responded that the entire policy toward Venezuela “is to support the Venezuelan people’s effort to restore democracy to their country.”

“I don’t think anybody disputes that,” Omar said, apparently unaware that the Code Pink protesters in the chamber had already disputed that.

How disgraceful was Omar’s performance? “When even Max Boot is calling you out, it might be time for some introspection.” That’s a commodity that’s in short supply for both Omar and Boot.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: Hampshire College announces layoffs. With more to come: “Nelson added that another workforce reduction will be needed this semester and those announcements will come on or near April 1.”

LYNDON LAROUCHE, CULT FIGURE WHO RAN FOR PRESIDENT 8 TIMES, DIES AT 96:

Some voters said they had voted for Mr. Fairchild and Ms. Hart because they had been endorsed by Mr. LaRouche’s National Democratic Policy Committee, which they thought was affiliated with the mainstream Democratic Party.

Critics of Mr. LaRouche said he had used that committee to deceive people abroad as well. In 1982, he managed to arrange a meeting with President José López Portillo of Mexico, evidently because Mexican officials thought Mr. LaRouche represented the Democratic Party.

“I’m as American as apple pie,” Mr. LaRouche once said.

Whatever he was, he received thousands of votes in his campaigns for president. In 1980, he outpolled Gov. Jerry Brown of California by a thousand votes in the Democratic presidential primary in Connecticut. In 1986, the candidates fielded by his National Democratic Policy Committee received 20 to 40 percent of the vote in local elections in California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Mr. LaRouche’s political roots were Marxist. From 1948 to 1963, he was active in the Socialist Workers Party, a Trotskyite group.

His own group surfaced during the student unrest at Columbia University in the late 1960s as a faction of the left-wing Students for a Democratic Society. It evolved into the National Caucus of Labor Committees, an organization largely made up of young upper-middle-class people who espoused Mr. LaRouche’s Marxist views.

He first ran for president in 1976 as the candidate of the left-wing United States Labor Party, now defunct.

In the 1980s, LaRouche was a prolific maker of cable infomercials, where likely most Americans first heard of him, including Homer J. Simpson, who works in Sector 7-G of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant:

Finally, for those who get Lyndon LaRouche and fellow Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confused, the Competitive Enterprise Institute has done a great public service by creating a handy comparison guide. The truth is out there!

TEACH WOMEN NOT TO LIE ABOUT SEX AND COMMIT MURDER: Teen sentenced after luring man for sex and fatally wounding him during robbery. “Tyjanae Allen, 18 at the time, was sentenced Wednesday to 20 to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder in the November 2017 death of Julio Cesar-Ortega, 29. . . . Cesar-Ortega had driven to the police station, bleeding profusely from his arm. He bled to death in his car, in the parking lot outside the station. Wells, the prosecutor, said the stab wound hit an artery in Cesar-Ortega’s arm. At the time, Cesar-Ortega worked at a car wash and had a wife and a 10-year-old daughter.”

THE PROPOSED EMPLOYMENT NONDISCRIMINATION ACT (“ENDA”) EXAMINED: ENDA, which is expected to receive attention in the House of Representatives this year, would make it illegal to discriminate in employment on the basis of sexual orientation (narrowly defined) or on the basis of gender identity (broadly defined). I’ve written about some problems with the bill. Even those generally sympathetic to the goal of outlawing employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation might want to consider them.

(Update: The piece linked to above doesn’t deal with the religious exemption issue.  For that, see generally here.)
