WEIRD STORIES COME OUT OF RUSSIA: On this day in 1729, Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia, was born in what was then part of Prussia and is now part of Poland. If your mind leaps to a story about her you learned in the schoolyard in the 8th grade … you know what story I’m talking about … the one about the horse … don’t play innocent with me … well it’s obviously an urban legend, and you and your 8th grade pals would have immediately recognized it as such had you been a couple of years older. Remember: It’s Russia. Weird stories come out of Russia. That doesn’t make them true.

STILL NOT ECONOMICAL IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD: Tesla to slash solar panel prices by 38% to stymie market share loss.

The Times reports that “To further reduce costs and complexity, customers will be asked to do many of the tasks Tesla employees used to do. Homeowners will photograph electric meters, circuit breaker boxes and other equipment and send the images to the company, reducing the need for site visits.”

Hmm.

ACEMAKER: A T-33 trainer banks during an air show at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. Per the caption, the T-33 is a two-seat version of the USAF’s first jet fighter, the F-80 Shooting Star.

LIZ SHELD’S MORNING BRIEF: Barr Won’t Take the House Judiciary Committee’s Bait. “Nadler has suggested that the committee will subpoena Barr and hold him in contempt if he does not appear and turn over the complete report. Barr has made the complete report available, excluding grand jury testimony, to some lawmakers, but only three Republicans have viewed it so far. Obviously, it’s super important to the Democrats.”

THEODORE DALRYMPLE: Every Pronoun Must Go.

The Scottish Maritime Museum, dedicated to the history of the country’s shipbuilding industry, has decided that it will no longer use the words she and her to refer to ships, but rather it and its. This is in response to feminists, who have defaced plaques referring to ships as she or her. This change would negate centuries of tradition, during which the words traditionally used on launching a ship, “May God bless all who sail in her,” carried no connotation of insult or deprecation—rather the reverse.

The Maritime Museum’s surrender is yet another instance of the craven surrender of British officialdom to the demands of a small but vociferous group of monomaniacs who make the imposition of their views the purpose of their lives. Museum authorities have argued that they must move with the times, and the prevention of vandalism is important, for economic reasons among others. Yet this rationale is something like awarding burglars a pension in an effort to prevent burglary.

When one of Orwell’s characters in 1984 said, “It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words,” the novel’s author intended those words to be a warning, not a how-to guide.

THIS WAS CNN: CNN sees ratings swoon in April.

CNN’s prime-time ratings dropped a whopping 26 percent in April compared to last year, according to Nielsen Media Research.

MSNBC’s ratings were down 14 percent in April 2019 compared to April 2018, while Fox News’s ratings overall were flat.

The sharp decrease for CNN marked its lowest-rated month in total viewers since October 2015.

In the 25- to 54-year-old demographic that advertisers covet most, it was the network’s least-watched month since Aug. 2015.

In prime time, Fox News finished first with an average of 2.4 million viewers. In April 2018, the network also averaged 2.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

MSNBC was second with an average of 1.66 million viewers, down from 1.93 million in April 2018.

CNN was third with 767,000 average primetime viewers, down from 1.04 million in April 2018.

Call it the Post-Mueller Effect.
