HEALTH: Folic acid linked to mental illness prevention in womb.

Women may be able to prevent severe mental illness in their children by consuming enough folic acid — found in foods such as grains, rice, cereal and bread — while they’re pregnant, according to researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital.

“The idea that the risk for these illnesses begins in the womb has gained biological support in recent years,” said Dr. Joshua Roffman of the MGH Department of Psychiatry and senior author of the report. “The field is really moving in the direction of prevention.”

Roffman and his colleagues reviewed two sets of MRIs taken from children — one group from those born before the government began requiring certain food products to be fortified with folic acid, and one group born after the mandate was instituted.

Researchers found that the cerebral cortex was significantly thinner in those who received less folic acid in the womb — a characteristic associated with both autism and schizophrenia, according to the paper published in JAMA Psychiatry.

“The best thing women of child-bearing age can do is to take folic acid supplements daily,” Roffman said. “For women who don’t take supplements, exposure to fortified foods may provide some protection.”

If that means the upcoming generation is likely to be less crazy, well, good. Personally, I take folic acid for its heart-health benefits, but I’m unlikely to benefit directly from this research.

BUSTED ARE THE CHEESEMAKERS*: Take Our Cheese, Please: American Cheese Makers Suffer Under New Tariffs.

BelGioioso Cheese Inc., a second-generation family company in Wisconsin, has seen sales to Mexico drop since officials there implemented tariffs of up to 15% in early June on most U.S. cheese. The levies were a response to tariffs the U.S. placed on Mexican steel and aluminum.

On Thursday, Mexico was slated to raise its levy on most U.S. cheese to as much as 25%, while China on Friday is implementing tariffs on $34 billion of U.S. goods, including cheese and whey, a dairy byproduct often fed to livestock.

“It’s a nightmare,” said BelGioioso President Errico Auricchio.

Milk consumption in the U.S. has been falling for decades, prompting dairies to turn more of it into cheese. To sell it all, farmers have aggressively marketed their products to growing middle-class populations in Mexico and Asia.

U.S. dairy exports hit a record in April, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council. Nearly a fifth of milk produced in the U.S. leaves the country, and dairy exports have nearly doubled from a decade ago.

NICE TO SEE SOME FACULTY PUSHBACK: 19 Cornell Law Professors: Dismiss Title IX Complaint Against Graduate Student and Give Him His Ph.D.

Nineteen Cornell Law School professors signed onto a letter condemning the University’s decision to withhold a student’s Ph.D. because of the “mere filing” of a Title IX complaint against him. They urged University officials to immediately dismiss the Title IX complaint — filed just three days before the physics graduate’s anticipated graduation — and to award the student, Yogesh Patil, his diploma.

The professors’ June 3 letter, sent to Cornell’s president, lead counsel and two Title IX officials, said the complaint against Patil is rife with “glaring factual errors” and, even if true, does not amount to a Title IX offense. Patil’s accuser, a woman identified as LA, says he retaliated against her for filing a Title IX complaint against Patil’s advisor, Prof. Mukund Vengalattore, by operating a website which includes information about that complaint.

“All the website did was publicly discuss a case of immense academic importance,” Prof. Kevin Clermont, law, the letter’s author, wrote. “If Yogesh is guilty of retaliation, then so is anyone who discusses Title IX proceedings at Cornell even without identifying details.”

Indeed. I think the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights should look into this.

ANNALS OF #THERESISTANCE: Teen Attacked For Wearing MAGA Hat, Assailant Fired.

San Antonio police are investigating what appears to be a politically motivated hate crime after 16-year-old Trump supporter Richard Hunter was reportedly assaulted by an aggressive liberal for wearing a red MAGA hat at a local Whataburger.

In a video which went viral Wednesday, an angry man in black-rimmed glasses can be seen throwing a soda on Hunter and two friends at 2:35 a.m. on the 4th of July. As the man walks away with the teenager’s MAGA hat, he can be heard shouting “this is gonna go great in my fucking fireplace, bitch,” while walking out of the eatery with another man who filmed the encounter. . . .

Within hours of the incident going viral, the attacker was identified through a crowdsourced effort as Kino Ahuitzotl Jimenez, a member of the Green Party of Texas according to their website. The group’s “key values” include; nonviolence, respect for diversity, and social justice.

Shortly thereafter Jimenez was fired from his job at San Antonio bar, Rumble, which confirmed his dismissal in several Facebook statements and a text exchange.

Well, good. I blame the Democrats’ climate of hatred and violence:

The attack comes amid escalating tensions over President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy of enforcing existing immigration laws, which has resulted in several members of the Trump administration suffering harassment in public and at their homes – most notably Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was ejected from the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, VA after the owner’s gay employees became uncomfortable in Sanders’s presence.

In response to the spate of public harassment last month, Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters (CA) called for Democrats to form into mobs and physically confront members of the Trump administration if they see them out in public.

“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” said Waters.

The next weekend, a massive skirmish broke out in Portland between Trump supporting “Proud Boys” and members of Antifa – who showed up to protest a conservative rally attended by the Proud Boys and the right-wing “Patriot Prayer” Group. At one point, a Proudboy known as Rufio (seen at 1:00 in the video below) knocks out an Antifa member cold.

Some Democratic leaders criticized Waters for encouraging violence, but Al Sharpton and Donna Brazile then criticized them.

HMM: Did Tesla Skip a Crucial Quality Step on the Model 3 Home Stretch?

A source familiar with the goings-ons within Fremont told Business Insider that Tesla abruptly ended brake and roll testing of near-completed vehicles. The test was cancelled at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26th, the source claims. Documents sent to the publication show the range of tests involved in this step — tests no longer listed as “critical.”

Brake and roll testing ensures that vehicles leaving the factory display even braking force at each wheel, proper wheel balance, coasting drag, and speed sensor calibration. It isn’t known why this step was cancelled when it was, or who ordered it.

“To be extremely clear, we drive *every* Model 3 on our test track to verify braking, torque, squeal and rattle. There are no exceptions,” said Tesla spokesperson Dave Arnold in a statement to Business Insider. Arnold wouldn’t comment further on the test, including the question of whether Musk ordered it removed.

Tesla published some impressive production figures earlier this week — I hope they didn’t skip steps just to juice the numbers.
