HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: “Today’s higher education implosion news comes from my graduate alma mater, Claremont Graduate University, which emailed everyone yesterday about the imminent closure of its graduate program in philosophy. I’ll update this if I get any better inside information, but I suspect declining enrollment is the main cause, though I hear many programs at CGU are running deeply in the red, so this may be just the first program to go under. . . . Maybe the university is indeed committed to the humanities, but somehow we never hear of business or computer science programs being shrunk or discontinued.”

[A]n assistant U.S. attorney said Avenatti had not made a payment that was due last week for unpaid taxes as part of the agreement that was reached in January. Court records show Avenatti had personally agreed to pay about $2.4 million in back taxes and penalties.
Well, maybe he has a future at MSNBC. They love tax dodgers.

SHOCKING NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF SCIENCE: The Bra Size That Makes Women Happiest:
Some 39 percent of women with a C-cup said they loved or liked their boobs out of five options including didn’t mind, disliked or hated their breasts.
The next happiest size was a D and DD, with 37 percent of women saying they loved or liked their size, followed by 34 percent for A and AA.
Well, there you go. I suspect this parallels the views of men fairly closely.
ON THIS DAY IN 1856, CONGRESSMAN PRESTON BROOKS (D-SC) BEAT SENATOR CHARLES SUMNER (R-Mass) WITHIN AN INCH OF HIS LIFE ON THE FLOOR OF U.S. SENATE: Two days earlier, at the height of the “Bleeding Kansas” crisis, Sumner had given an impassioned speech against the Kansas-Nebraska Act and against slavery itself. Brooks, whose cousin Senator Andrew Butler had been instrumental in the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, viewed the beating with a cane as an acting of retaliation for defamation. Sumner was lucky to survive. It was years before he was able to continue his work at the Senate full time.
If you think we’re polarized now, try 1856: William Cullen Bryant in the New York Evening Post wrote: “Has it come to this, that we must speak with bated breath in the presence of our Southern masters?… Are we to be chastised as they chastise their slaves? Are we too, slaves, slaves for life, a target for their brutal blows, when we do not comport ourselves to please them?” On the other hand, the Richmond Enquirer editorialized that “vulgar abolitionists in the Senate” should be “lashed into submission.”
SETTLED SCIENCE: Every Cell in Your Body Has the Same DNA. Except It Doesn’t.
OPPOSITE COAST, SAME PROBLEM: It’s not just Pomona College where students are uncomfortable sharing their political views. Student newspaper The Dartmouth reports that 77% of Democrat and a whopping 94% of Republican students in an online poll believe “the climate on Dartmouth’s campus prevents some people from saying things they believe because others might find them offensive.” Colleges talk a lot about creating a “welcoming environment.” Whatever it is they’re doing, it doesn’t seem to be working that well.
I HAVEN’T TRIED THIS, BUT I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WHO THINK IT’S GREAT: Intermittent Fasting Seems To Be A Good Thing, New Report Suggests. “A typical intermittent fasting pattern consists of 16 hours of not eating and eight hours for eating in a 24-hour day.” I don’t do that, but I generally go from a moderately early dinner to a not-so-early breakfast, about 14 hours. Though some quantity of adult beverages is usually consumed in the evening.
ARMY DEPOT DISCOVERS A .50 CALIBER M2 HEAVY MACHINE GUN THAT HAS BEEN IN THE ARSENAL FOR 94 YEARS: It’s still serviceable. Unfortunately, upgrading M2 serial number 324 will require changing the receiver.
While it may be possible to modify the nine-decades-old gun, it’s still easier to replace the receiver and scrap the veteran part. There is a glimmer of hope for M2 324. It’s possible that the Army will put the gun on display, celebrating the gun and its history. “I’d rather put this one on display than send it to the scrap yard,” said Clark.
Clark works at the Anniston Army Depot (Anniston, Alabama). This is a case where defense budgeteers got it right. Taxpayers got their money’s worth.
