TIM BERNERS-LEE: Father of Web says tech giants may have to be split up.

“What naturally happens is you end up with one company dominating the field so through history there is no alternative to really coming in and breaking things up,” Berners-Lee, 63, said in an interview. “There is a danger of concentration.”

But he urged caution too, saying the speed of innovation in both technology and tastes could ultimately cut some of the biggest technology companies down to size.

“Before breaking them up, we should see whether they are not just disrupted by a small player beating them out of the market, but by the market shifting, by the interest going somewhere else,” Berners-Lee said.

Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Facebook have a combined market capitalization of $3.7 trillion, equal to Germany’s gross domestic product last year.

That’s an incredible figure.

LIZ SHELD’S MORNING BRIEF: White Men Are Terrorists and Much, Much More. “We have to stop demonizing people and realize the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them,” Lemon said in the segment on Tuesday. “There is no travel ban on them … They had the Muslim ban; there is no white-guy ban,” he added. “So what do we do about that?”

Who is this we, kemosabe?

CHINA PREPARES FOR HOT WAR AND LONG STRUGGLE:

As China’s economy modernized, the U.S. bet political liberalization would follow. International integration would moderate China’s Communists and a democracy focused on internal development and peaceful economic competition would emerge.

So much for optimism. The Communist dictatorship opted for imperial territorial expansion, most overtly in the South China Sea. However, its territorial aspirations in the Himalayas and the East China Sea are also aggressive.

It’s my latest Creators Syndicate column.

POLITICO: More Voters Blame Media Than Blame Trump For Dividing The Country.

Just 3 in 10 voters, 30 percent, said Trump has done more to unite the country, compared with 56 percent who said he’s done more to divide it. Even more voters, 64 percent, said the media have done more to divide the country, while only 17 percent say they have done more to unite it.

Hey, maybe they really are the enemy of the people. . . .

GET WOKE, GO BROKE: CNN Falls To Hallmark Channel’s Made-For-TV Movies In October. “CNN was by far the least competitive cable news network in October, finishing 9th in primetime behind Fox Sports 1, The Hallmark Channel, and Home and Garden Television. CNN finished 7th in total day behind Nickelodeon and Hallmark.”

THE 21ST CENTURY IS NOT TURNING OUT THE WAY I’D HOPED: Surgery students ‘losing dexterity to stitch patients.’

Roger Kneebone, professor of surgical education at Imperial College, London, says young people have so little experience of craft skills that they struggle with anything practical.

“It is important and an increasingly urgent issue,” says Prof Kneebone, who warns medical students might have high academic grades but cannot cut or sew.

“It is a concern of mine and my scientific colleagues that whereas in the past you could make the assumption that students would leave school able to do certain practical things – cutting things out, making things – that is no longer the case,” says Prof Kneebone.

Are universities going to have to add “remedial doing stuff” classes on top of Bonehead English?

WINNING: The American Wage Boom. “Raises for U.S. workers are creating very confident consumers.”

Compensation for U.S. workers grew at an accelerating rate in the third quarter, a sign a historically tight labor market is yielding better pay for employees…

The increase was led by improving pay for private-sector workers. Wages and salaries, which account for about 70% of total compensation, rose 3.1% from a year earlier for private-sector workers. That was the strongest year-over-year gain since the second quarter of 2008.

Total compensation for those workers increased 0.8% on the quarter and 2.9% from a year earlier… Worker compensation is now rising at a faster pace than prices. The consumer-price index rose 2.3% from a year earlier in September, the Labor Department said.

A READER EMAILS:

Can you imagine if we had this blistering economy with a Democrat President?

The MSM would be covering nothing else.

Even people who are generally on the side of President Trump have come to accept that the biggest story in many, many years, and the biggest success story in the American economy that anyone can remember, and which vindicates every conservative principle about taxes and regulation in spectacular fashion, is not even news that merits being reported.

So true.

POLITICKING: Obama and Biden are on mission to win back swing state voters. “The former president and vice president are campaigning in places they won but flipped to Trump in 2016.”

Obama-to-Trump voters put Trump in the White House, and it seems a bit soon for them to switch back to the President and Veep who disappointed them for eight years.

ROGER KIMBALL: They Can’t Bear the Thought That Trump’s Win Was No Anomaly. “Adamant anti-Trump and NeverTrump commentators have circulated and then taken solace from the Blue Wave meme not because they are especially credulous, but because the election of Donald Trump offended their sense of existential propriety.”

I’m still dumbfounded by supposedly principled conservatives who place personality and NOKD snobbery above principles.

OPEN THREAD: Tricks or treats, your choice.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Democrats’ Hidden Civil War. Plus a cameo by the New Socialist “It Girl,” Alexandria Occasional-Cortex:

What’s happening is that the energy in the Democratic Party now is coming from richer educated white liberals who are most motivated by issues that don’t resonate with the ethnic minorities who make up the Democratic base. For example, did you know that in the bellwether House race in which newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unseated veteran incumbent Joe Crowley, the challenger’s strongest precincts were the whiter, wealthier ones, while the incumbent ran strongest in the most heavily minority precincts? It turns out that minority voters tend to care about who can deliver for them on bread-and-butter issues more than making symbolic identity politics statements. Politico reports that this is causing a growing divide within Democratic ranks.

Exit quote: “Never forget: in America, we do class warfare through culture war.”

Read the whole thing.

A VERY STRONG STATEMENT ON ANTISEMITISM: Donald Trump on Sunday: “This evil, anti-Semitic attack is an assault on all of us. It is an assault on humanity. It must be confronted and condemned everywhere it rears its ugly head. We must stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters to defeat anti-Semitism and vanquish the forces of hate. Those seeking their destruction, we will seek their destruction.”

This has to be among the strongest statements any president has made on behalf of Jewish Americans. Yet I could find no mention of it in the New York Times, Washington Post, and so on.

Compare and contrast Obama’s reference to Jewish victims of anti-Semitic terrorism in Paris as victims of zealots who “randomly shoot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris,” with the White House afterwards defending the proposition that the Jews shopping in a kosher market, somewhere that only Jews go, were not targeted because they were Jews, which was obviously untrue from the getgo.

UPDATE: A Facebook friend points out that you can find bits and pieces of the quotation, but not the full quotation, in the Times. But the way the Times isolates and portrays the final sentence, which I see as the strongest and most dramatic part of the statement, is bizarre and dishonest.

At his rally, the president ended comments about the synagogue shooting by reiterating his belief that shooting suspects who target Jewish people should be put to death.

“Those seeking their destruction,” Mr. Trump said, “we will seek their destruction.”

No, Trump didn’t say that “shooting suspects” who target Jews should “be put to death,” he said that he will seek the destruction of those seeking destruction of our “Jewish brothers and sisters.” That’s not at all the same thing.
