DISPATCHES FROM THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE: Rod Dreher on Middlebury’s Obscene Cowardice:

This capitulation to the ideological thugs who attacked [Charles] Murray and others on Middlebury’s campus deserves wide denunciation. A professor from the man’s own department was physically assaulted by these goons, and sent to the hospital — and nobody has been held accountable for any of this by Middlebury. As a scholar and as an American, Bert Johnson, the poli sci department head, should be ashamed of himself. He has shown himself to be a lickspittle to the campus left, and will be treated exactly that way by the radicals he is helping to empower.

Read the whole thing. As Princeton’s Robert P. George asked last night on Twitter, “Do you recall the Maoist ‘struggle sessions’ in which Chinese intellectuals were shamed and forced to confess errors?” But in Communist China, power flowed directly from the barrel of Mao’s gun. The staff at Middlebury capitulated to the mob voluntarily.

DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH: 2nd doctor, wife arrested in genital mutilation case.

Federal agents arrested a second doctor and his wife Friday in a widening conspiracy involving female genital mutilation and members of a Muslim sect.

Dr. Fakhruddin Attar is accused of letting Dr. Jumana Nagarwala perform mutilations at his Burhani Medical Clinic on Farmington Road. His wife, office manager Farida Attar, also was arrested and is accused of helping Nagarwala perform the mutilations, according to a 14-page complaint unsealed Friday in federal court.

The arrests are the latest development in the nation’s first female genital mutilation case, which is providing insight into a small, insular Muslim community in Metro Detroit and an illegal procedure performed on young girls.

The complaint solves a mystery stemming from the case by pinpointing where Nagarwala allegedly mutilated two 7-year-old girls from Minnesota earlier this year. The complaint also describes a conspiracy involving at least Nagarwala, Attar and his wife — all three are members of the Dawoodi Bohra religious community based locally out of a Farmington Hills mosque. . . .

Embassy Title Agency Inc. owner Kate McCarty’s office is next door to the Burhani clinic. She watched Attar’s arrest Friday after he arrived in the parking lot and is shaken by allegations of mutilations that allegedly happened next door.

“What do you think? It’s disgusting,” McCarty said. “I mean, it’s terrible.”

Such xenophobia.

SHE’S QUITE ATTRACTIVE, AND SHE’S A VERY, VERY GOOD DRIVER. JUST NOT A GREAT DRIVER. SO THIS MAKES A LOT OF SENSE: Eye on her future, Danica Patrick races into fitness space. “Patrick turned 35 last month. She has been racing more than half her life, building her brand along the journey and using a marketing strategy that has made her one of the most recognized female athletes in the world despite her limited on-track success. She is ranked 29th through the first seven races of the season.”

GERRYMANDERING DIDN’T BECOME A BIG DEAL UNTIL IT STARTED BEING DONE TO, RATHER THAN BY, DEMOCRATS: Pivotal Moment’ for Democrats? Gerrymandering Heads to Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has found redistricting on partisan lines to be non-justiciable, because there’s really no way to do it along non-partisan lines. (“Non-partisan” commissions are anything but — see what the Democrats conned the GOP into in California, for example.)

ACTUAL “SMART DIPLOMACY” IN ACTION: “White House officials said Mr. Trump took a personal interest in her case…. He just said, ‘Let’s bring her home.’”

It’s hard — isn’t it? — for the liberal media to give President Trump credit for anything, but they should gracefully give him the credit he genuinely deserves. Imagine what the NYT would look like if President Obama had brought Aya Hijazi home! Trump was portrayed in a negative light for cozying up to Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, but the Obama administration tried and failed to bring Hijazi home. . . .

Let’s talk about which is better, Obama’s words or Trump’s words? Do Trump’s words seem ridiculous and clownish — calling Sisi “fantastic” — when we see that Trump got results? . . .

Successful action is camouflaged in verbiage about things that have been said. Some of his words may sound like confusion, but that doesn’t mean Trump is confused about what he is saying. Maybe he knows how to use words. There’s an awful lot of evidence that he does. You can look down on him and call him confused, but when the results come in, you ought to question your analysis of what he is doing with words.

Acknowledging that would interfere with the smugness.

SOMETHING IS HAPPENING HERE BUT YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS, DO YOU, MRS. JONES? “The campaign had no central message and, worse, it featured an unpleasant but clueless Hillary Clinton, who confided to a close friend, ‘I don’t understand what’s happening in the country.’”

Epistemic closure — now there’s a confidence booster in a presidential candidate. Say what you will about Trump’s excesses, he did understand on a gut level what was happening in the country, and acted upon it accordingly.

CHANGE: Trump says ‘massive tax cut’ plan coming as soon as Wednesday.

President Trump told The Associated Press on Friday that he intends to release a tax reform plan next week that includes a “massive tax cut” for businesses and individuals.

Trump said the plan would be unveiled “Wednesday or shortly thereafter” and would involve tax cuts that would be “bigger I believe than any tax cut ever.”

The announcement of the tax plan’s release comes as Trump seeks to notch achievements ahead of hitting his 100th day in office, on April 29.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday that the White House would be releasing a tax plan “very soon.”

I look forward to seeing it.
