Its locked doors and worn brick stand like weary sentinels along the banks of the Mississippi in this struggling southeast Iowa river-and-railroad town.

Rust weeps through the paint on the window frames; the once magnificent illuminated-letters sign with the trademark white dot that faced Illinois is gone, no longer serving as a gatekeeper for its fortress of employees.

At its peak, it employed more than 2,500 people in a town of 14,000; nearly everyone here had someone in their family who worked there — sometimes, two or three or more.

By the time they were bought out by French-owned BIC in 2003, the 40 employees left in the iconic company’s pen-point assembly department were told it was only a matter of time before the operation would be moved to a third-party manufacturer in Asia; Slovakia would become the home for customer service, purchasing, warehousing and distribution work, as well as packaging and quality control.

What made Sheaffer special?

This summer you can go see “Rough Night” starring Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon or “Girls Trip” starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah. In the former, five friends accidentally kill a male stripper they have hired for a bachelorette party. While a surprising number of critics have worried about the idea of playing a dead stripper for laughs, the plot is completely secondary to the idea that five women in Vegas are finally going to let loose — or as one of the characters has it — they’ll be “swimming in d–k” this weekend.

Letting loose, in case you didn’t realize, means acting like men. Which is why one of the characters yells at another, “Stop being a stupid f–king c–t and do a little cocaine.” It’s why the women do shots and then vomit onto the table and why when the stripper does arrive, one of them yells, “Get to the beans, get to the beans.” The notion that women 10 years out of college with real jobs and children at home talk and act like this — even when they’ve consumed an excessive amount of alcohol — is a bit of a stretch.

Well, actually most men don’t act this way either. But I have to caution Naomi that “frat boy” is an unacceptably sexist term, and is NOT okay.
