INSTITUTIONAL ROT: ‘Fat Leonard’ probe expands to ensnare more than 60 admirals. “The Justice Department has filed criminal charges against 28 people, including two admirals, since Francis was arrested in an international sting operation four years ago. Those cases comprise the worst corruption scandal in Navy history, but they represent a fraction of a much larger list of Navy officials under investigation but whose names have been mostly kept secret. In response to queries from The Post, the Navy recently confirmed that it has been reviewing the conduct of 440 other active-duty and retired personnel — including 60 current and former admirals — for possible violations of military law or federal ethics rules in their dealings with Francis and his company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia. That is double the number of admirals whom Navy officials said were under investigation last year.”

Meanwhile our sailors can’t drive our ships.

MORE LEFTY POLITICAL VIOLENCE: New Details on Rand Paul Assault: Sneak Attack, Possible Political Dispute. “Paul was wearing headphones while mowing his lawn in Bowling Green, Kentucky, when he was attacked from behind by Rene Boucher, 59, on Sunday afternoon, two sources said. Paul suffered five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures.”

BRANDEIS STUDENTS OFFENDED BY PLAY ABOUT OFFENDED STUDENTS: Administrators canceled the play after student backlash over the Lenny Bruce-inspired production. In the 2015 documentary “Can We Take a Joke?” (I am an executive producer), I claimed “Lenny Bruce wouldn’t last five minutes on the modern college campus.” Because the influential comedian died in 1966, we can’t know the answer for sure, but this is about as close to confirmation of that prediction as we are likely to get. A lack of sense of humor on campus is apparently no laughing matter.

THE DANGERS OF DROWSY DRIVING: My car is supposed to fuss at you if you look like you’re falling asleep, but I’ve never actually experienced that. But I’ve always been pretty careful about not driving when I’m tired.

GLENN GREENWALD: Four Viral Claims Spread by Journalists on Twitter in the Last Week Alone That are False.

Viral Falsehood #1: The Clinton/DNC agreement cited by Brazile only applied to the General Election, not the primary.

On Wednesday, Politico published a blockbuster accusation from Donna Brazile’s new book: that the DNC had “rigged” the 2016 primary election for Hillary Clinton through an agreement that gave Clinton control over key aspects of the DNC, a claim that Elizabeth Warren endorsed on CNN. The Clinton camp refused to comment publicly, but instead contacted their favorite reporters to publish their response as news.

The following day, NBC published an article by Alex Seitz-Wald that recited and endorsed the Clinton camp’s primary defense: that Brazile was wrong because the agreement in question (a copy of which they provided to Seitz-Wald) applied “only to preparations for the general election,” and had nothing to do with the primary season. That defense, if true, would be fatal to Brazile’s claims, and so DNC-loyal journalists all over Twitter instantly declared it to be true, thus pronouncing Brazile’s accusation to have been fully debunked. This post documents how quickly this claim was endorsed on Twitter by journalists and Democratic operatives, and how far and wide it therefore spread.

The problem with this claim is that it is blatantly and obviously false. All one has to do to know this is read the agreement.

I used to think of them as Democratic operatives with bylines, and that did make everything make more sense. But now I just think of them as fake newsies.

MORE BAD NEWS FOR PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS: Common heartburn meds show ties to kidney trouble. “The study couldn’t prove cause-and-effect — it’s possible that folks who need these heartburn medicines are simply more prone to kidney disease for other reasons. But the review of data did show a link.”

THE SAUDI CRACKDOWN WIDENS. “A campaign of mass arrests of Saudi Arabian royals, ministers and businessmen expanded on Monday after a top entrepreneur was reportedly detained in the biggest anti-corruption purge of the kingdom’s affluent elite in its modern history. The reported arrest of Nasser bin Aqeel al-Tayyar followed the detention of dozens of top Saudis including billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal in a crackdown that the attorney general described as ‘phase one’.”

THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT: T. Rex’s tiny arms weren’t meek after all — new research says they were meant for ‘vicious slashing.’

It’s important to note that while T. Rex’s forelimbs were indeed small in relation to the dinosaur’s huge body and jaws, they were still one meter (three feet) in length and may have been capable of bench-pressing over 180 kg (400 pounds) each. Stanley has identified several clues that suggest T. Rex mini-arms were actually secret weapons capable of inflicting ferocious damage.

For starters, the arms are strong and robust, as indicated by the bones that make up the limbs themselves but also the coracoid, which is the shoulder bone that helps control arm movement. Being so short in relation to the dinosaur’s towering body, the arms would have been perfectly adapted to slashing at close quarters. Another hint is that T. Rex had two claws on each forelimb instead of the typical three most other theropods feature. Having just two claws would have helped T. Rex exert 50 percent more pressure when slashing and clawing. The (8-10 cm long) sickle-shaped claws would have caused deep wounds.

I don’t know if the science is settled, but this theory is much more exciting than the old one.

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Hey, they mock Trump’s “tiny hands,” too, and yet he uses them to send slashing tweets. . . .
