JOHN HINDERAKER: A Great Night For Trump and Republicans. “Near the end, Trump said something to the effect that as president, he doesn’t represent the world. He represents the people of the United States. This is tautological, and it was stunning to see the Democrats glumly sitting on their hands. Do they seriously not understand the president’s role, and their own?”

SO THE DEMOCRATS COULDN’T FIND AN ACTUAL DEMOCRATIC OFFICEHOLDER TO GIVE THE RESPONSE TO TRUMP? I mean, what’s the strategy here?

UPDATE: Meh, he basically repeated Trump’s points, only less convincingly.

A MOVE TO “MERIT-BASED IMMIGRATION” is a huge shift.

SEEN ON FACEBOOK: “I want to spike my drink with Nancy Pelosi’s tears.” She does look awfully unhappy.

Also: “I see why the Democrats hate Trump. If he succeeds, their gravy train is done.”

OPEN THREAD: Discuss Trump’s speech in the comments here.

ASTROTURF IS THE NEW GRASSROOTS: The Democrats’ Spontaneous Grassroots Response to Trump’s Speech is Ready.

Because nothing says spontaneous grassroots outrage like shared talking point tweets on Google Sheets.

So, let’s have some fun. They’ve been suggesting using the hashtag #JointAddress, so let’s add some tweets of our own. Here are a few suggestions:

Obama’s “if you like your plan” statement was awarded Lie of the Year by PolitiFact.

ACA = unfunded mandate. Hundreds of hours of unpaid extra work in small companies.

Trump’s repeal of EPA policies will give coal miners hope and jobs.

Trump’s election has massively increased media interest in reporting government overreach.

If you want the press to do its job, elect a white male Republican.

I know I can depend on the creativity of PJ readers. Make up your own, and post them in the comments — but tweet them first!

Heh.

UNEXPECTEDLY! “Leonardo DiCaprio flew eyebrow artist 7,500 miles to do his brows for the Oscars — The move is particularly surprising given the fact that DiCaprio is an active environment campaigner.”

Is that you, Fox Butterfield? In any case, you spelled “totally expected” wrong. But as the Professor is wont to say, I’ll believe global warming is a crisis, when the people who scream it’s a crisis start to act like it’s a crisis themselves.

FEMALE HYPERGAMY’S CONSEQUENCES: Poor Marriage Prospects For Low-Status Men. And a lot of it is foreign trade: “Trade shocks reduce the availability and desirability of potentially marriageable young men along multiple dimensions.”

Plus:

It’s not only that young working-class men are less marriageable when jobs dry up, but that some of these men are actually disappearing, the paper noted. When Chinese imports take a greater share of trade, the ratio of young men to women declines by 1.7 percentage points, they found. The study examined population shifts in commuting zones, or the 722 regions that cover the continental U.S. and represent a regional economic area.

Where are these young men going? Many are turning to risky behaviors such as heavy drinking and drug use. Trade shocks are leading to higher mortality rates for young men, which explains some — but not all — of the imbalance. Young men are also disappearing because they’re incarcerated, homeless or migrating to other areas to find better job opportunities.

The research doesn’t paint a pretty picture, but it’s one that may be familiar to many Americans in rural areas or in cities that once relied on manufacturing. Rustbelt cities and rural regions are struggling to cope with a rise in opioid addictions, such as the record-breaking 52 overdoses in Louisville, Kentucky, in 32 hours earlier this month.

Drug use is also taking a toll on middle-age Americans. Two years ago, research from Princeton professors Angus Deaton and Anne Case grabbed headlines with their finding that white middle-age Americans are dying at higher rates because of suicide, addiction, liver disease and other afflictions.

Fundamentally transformed. But can we un-transform?

DISPATCHES FROM THE INTERSECTION OF THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE AND THE NEWSPEAK DICTIONARY: “Seeking ‘gender inclusivity,’ [University of Minnesota] sheds homecoming king and queen titles. Two students, regardless of gender, will be homecoming ‘royalty’ starting this fall.”

Scientists will quickly discover the shortest period of time measurable when the students crowned as “royalty” will be ordered to check their privilege.
