STEVEN HAYWARD: Additional Oddities Start to Emerge About Las Vegas Shooter.

UPDATE (From Ed): Curious quote from Las Vegas sheriff on the shooter: “This person may have radicalized, unbeknownst to us, and we want to identify that source.”

MORE: “Maybe it means nothing, but that is a tantalizing word choice a day after ISIS pulled out its full court press to push their claim,” tweets Rukmini Callimachi‏ of the New York Times, who has owned the ISIS angle on the Las Vegas slaughter over the last two days.

WEIRD TO SEE THIS IN THE WASHINGTON POST: I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise.

Before I started researching gun deaths, gun-control policy used to frustrate me. I wished the National Rifle Association would stop blocking common-sense gun-control reforms such as banning assault weapons, restricting silencers, shrinking magazine sizes and all the other measures that could make guns less deadly.

Then, my colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States, and I wound up frustrated in a whole new way. We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

How about that?

HUH, HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Monday Night Football Falls Double-Digits In Viewers & Demo: “The ESPN broadcast was then followed by the national anthem that saw all of the DC team linking arms while Chiefs players Marcus Peters and Ukeme Eligwe sat on the bench.”

And Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston knelt with his back to the flag. Somewhere, the ghost of Pete Rozelle is not happy.

Related: “It has become a sort of reflex to object to the National Football League’s players’ bended knee/sitting through the National Anthem—while also conceding that their complaints have merit,” Victor Davis Hanson writes. “But do they?”

WHY DOES THOMAS FRIEDMAN hate Muslims?

BUZZFEED ACTUALLY DOES SOME SURPRISINGLY FAIR WORK HERE, explaining Nikki Haley’s vote against the UN resolution on the Death Penalty:

The Trump administration is under fire from LGBT activists and human rights supporters over a vote on Tuesday against a resolution condemning the use of the death penalty. But it isn’t just this particular resolution or the current administration — the US has never supported any measure at the UN that condemns the death penalty.

Of course, they had to correct the story to add that the Obama Administration voted “present,” not “no.” (Shocker!)

What I find troubling is that in their abundant generosity to Democrats, they left out the inconvenient fact that while Governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton — running for President — signed a death warrant for a mentally incompetent man named Ricky Lee Rector:

Despite Rector’s mental state, then Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton made a point of returning to Arkansas to oversee Rector’s January 24, 1992, execution during the 1992 U.S. Presidential campaign.

DISCLOSURE: I’m against the Death Penalty because of its irreversibility in the face of police or judicial misconduct, and obviously, I oppose hanging or defenestrating people because they are gay. The sour note here is either BuzzFeed’s lack of recent historical knowledge, or conveniently avoiding facts that might undercut the “Democrats are warm fuzzy humanitarians” meme. I’m honestly not sure which.

I LINKED THIS PIECE YESTERDAY, but Camille Paglia’s take on Gloria Steinem is worth breaking out:

Gloria Steinem has said that what Playboy doesn’t know about women could fill a book. What do you think about that?

What Playboy doesn’t know about well-educated, upper-middle-class women with bitter grievances against men could fill a book! I don’t regard Gloria Steinem as an expert on any of the human appetites, sexuality being only one of them. Interviews with Steinem were documenting from the start how her refrigerator contained nothing but two bottles of carbonated water. Steinem’s philosophy of life is extremely limited by her own childhood experiences. She came out of an admittedly unstable family background. I’m so tired of that animus of hers against men, which she’s been cranking out now for decade after decade. I come from a completely different Italian-American background — very food-centric and appetite-centric. Steinem, with that fulsomely genteel WASP persona of hers, represents an attitude of malice and vindictiveness toward men that has not proved to be in the best interest of young women today.

So would you say that her other comment — that women reading Playboy feels a little like a Jew reading a Nazi manual — is just an expression of her animus toward men?

Oh Lord, how many times is Gloria Steinem going to play the Nazi card? What she said about me in the 1990s was: “Her calling herself a feminist is sort of like a Nazi saying he’s not anti-Semitic.” That’s the simplistic level of Steinem’s thinking!

Gloria Steinem, Susan Faludi, all of those relentlessly ideological feminists are people who have wandered away from traditional religion and made a certain rabid type of feminist rhetoric their religion. And their fanaticism has poisoned the public image of feminism and driven ordinary, mainstream citizens away from feminism. It’s outrageous. . . . Steinem is basically a socialite who always hid her early dependence on men in the social scene in New York. And as a Democrat, I also blame her for having turned feminism into a covert adjunct of the Democratic party.

Yes.

TEACH WOMEN NOT TO RAPE! (CONT’D): Teacher admits sexually assaulting depressed 11-year-old boy she ‘wanted to make happy.’ “Katherine Gonzalez, 25, from Wisconsin in the US, was arrested on 5 March and charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. She pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault of a child in August, and was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.”

THIS KEEPS GET WEIRDER: Shooter Wired $100,000 To Philippines The Week Before Massacre.

Paddock’s girlfriend, 62-year-old Marilou Danley, was in the Philippines, her native country, Sunday when Paddock began firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. It remains unclear whether the money was intended for Danley, her family members, or for some unknown purpose.

The pair lived together in Mesquite, Nev., and investigators believe that they began seeing each other in the spring of 2017.

Authorities maintain that Danley, who is scheduled to return to the U.S. for questioning Wednesday, did not participate in planning the attack.

“We have had conversations with her and we believed her, at this time, not to be involved. But obviously that investigation will continue,” Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said. “She was not with [Paddock] when he checked in. We have discovered he was utilizing some of her identification.”
