PAUL KRUGMAN ON ELECTION NIGHT: “If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never.”

MarketWatch, tonight: The stock market is doing so much winning, Wall Street is thinking Nasdaq 6,000. “Indeed, the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.64% closed at a record for a seventh straight session Wednesday, its longest such streak since Dec. 27, 1999, closing up 0.6% at 5,819. The Dow DJIA, +0.52% the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.50% and the small-cap focused Russell 2000 RUT, +0.54% also recorded all-time highs at the same time amid their own historic streaks.”

DO BEAR IN MIND THAT IT’S ALSO OKAY TO PUNCH BACK TWICE AS HARD, IN OBAMA’S MEMORABLE FORMULATION: Now It’s Okay to Punch Nazis and White Male Libertarians. That Escalated Quickly. “So how’s that for goal-post shifting? First, we decide it’s okay to attack Nazis. Then we decide it’s okay to punch people who aren’t Nazis but are awful and sort of remind us of Nazis. Then it becomes okay to punch the people who say Nazis and Milo are bad but we shouldn’t punch them. You know those slippery-slope arguments people are always rolling their eyes at? Well, there’s the slippery slope for you. And we’ll be normalizing a whole lot of violence as we slide.”

You don’t want to normalize violence, lefties. You won’t like it when violence is normalized.

RIGHT TRACK:

Forty-five percent (45%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey for the week ending February 9.

That’s down a point from the previous week and down two points from the week before that which was the highest level of optimism in over 12 years of regular surveying. By comparison, the weekly finding was in the mid- to upper 20s for much of 2016.

Huh. You wouldn’t know it from the news.

REPORT: Shortlist for Puzder replacements: “Potential candidates, according to a White House official, are former National Labor Relations Board members Peter Kirsanow and R. Alexander Acosta; Joseph Guzman, an assistant professor at Michigan State University; and Catherine Templeton, former head of the South Carolina labor department.”

GLAD TO SEE NBC TAKING A BOLD STAND AGAINST FAKE NEWS:

ANALYSIS: TRUE.

CHANGE: Trump’s New Approach on Israel-Palestine Just Might Work, Roger Simon writes.

At least judging by the photo atop Roger’s article, Netanyahu certainly seemed much happier to be back at the White House than he has for the last eight years.

I WANT TO BELIEVE: Churchill essay on the possibility of alien life discovered in US college.

The 11-page article was probably intended for the now defunct Sunday newspaper the News of the World, but for reasons unknown the essay remained with his publisher and only recently resurfaced at the US National Churchill Museum at Westminster College in Missouri.

In the essay, Churchill ponders the conditions that make for a habitable world, and on considering the vast number of stars perhaps circled by alien planets, comes to the conclusion that the answer to the essay’s title question, Are We Alone in the Universe?, was surely a resounding “no”.

“The first time I saw it, I thought the combination of Churchill and such a big question had to be a fascinating read, and that proved to be right,” Timothy Riley, the museum’s director, told the Guardian. “It is completely fitting that Churchill would ask such a question. He was keenly interested in science and technological advancement and supported it throughout his long career.” Riley said the museum hopes to make the essay public as soon as it can.

Fascinating find. Fascinating man.
