THIS SEEMS ONLY FAIR: Court backs ex-UT players on social media bid in rape case. “A state appellate court ruled Wednesday former University of Tennessee star linebacker A.J. Johnson and a former teammate have the right go after the social media history of the woman who accuses them of rape and her friends in their bid to prove they are wrongfully accused. The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals sided with lead defense attorneys Stephen Ross Johnson and David Eldridge on behalf of Johnson and Michael Williams, respectively, in a ruling that not only may bolster their claim of innocence but now opens the door for defense attorneys in criminal cases to directly seek from witnesses social media history without relying on prosecutors or police to do so. . . . Although interviews by the Knoxville Police Department of the accuser and witnesses indicated all had used social media to discuss various aspects of the case, the agency did not follow up with a subpoena to get that social media history. The defense then sought to get it on their own, using subpoenas. The state balked. Judge Bob McGee backed the state but allowed the defense to appeal because of the statewide implications of the issue.”

Here’s the actual opinion, where the court noted that the State “appears to have engaged in a ‘hide the ball’ strategy which is inimical to the constitutional rights laboriously described above.”

A BIG DAMN HERO: Woman dives into pond to save drowning lady.

She was on an ordinary run when she decided to take an extra lap around her route. That extra lap changed her ordinary run into an extraordinary experience.

“A car was going airborne into the middle of the pond,” Davis said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this is happening.'”

86-year-old Ann Leslie had hit the gas instead of the brakes and catapulted into the water.

“There was a woman, and she looked scared,” Davis said. “[I thought,] I’m going to try and do something. I’m going into the pond.”

She dove in, and once she got to the Toyota Highlander, it was almost under water.

“Miraculously, she got her back window down,” Davis said. “Then she reached for me, and I got her out so her head was above water.”

She held her there, above water, until paramedics arrived. By doing so, Davis saved the stranger’s life.

I went to high school with her. Nice work, Gloria!

CHRISTIAN TOTO: Why This Awful Assignment Doesn’t Deserve its Fate.

I’ve always been a fan of Walter Hill’s over-the-top action movies — especially the bad ones. That Assignment is anti-PC just makes me want to see it even more.

TERROR IS JUST A WORD FOR THE THINGS THEY CHOOSE TO DO TOGETHER: Iranian Airline’s Ties to Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Boeing announced last week it would sell 30 B737 Max aircraft to Aseman Airlines – a government-owned carrier that is Iran’s third-largest – in a deal valued at around $3 billion. The deal appears to be permitted under the 2015 nuclear agreement, which lifted U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic’s aviation sector. There is, however, a problem: Aseman’s CEO, Hossein Alaei, is a decades-long senior member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, which remains under U.S. sanctions.

Since 1979, Alaei has held senior positions in the IRGC’s military establishment. He joined the Guard shortly after the 1979 Iranian revolution and quickly rose to be commander of IRGC forces in two northwestern provinces. In the 1980s, he commanded the Karbala Garrison in the southern front during the Iran-Iraq War. In 1985, then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini appointed him commander of the newly established IRGC Navy. Under his leadership, it began using high-speed boats and mines to target commercial and military vessels during the so-called Tanker War with Iraq.

Like his ideological peers, Alaei openly voiced his desire to confront America. During the Tanker War, the IRGC Navy attacked U.S.-owned commercial vessels and Navy vessels, on one occasion injuring U.S. sailors.

WELL, THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY, YOU KNOW: Inmates built computers hidden in ceiling, connected them to prison network: Ohio prison’s lax supervision was akin to “an episode from Hogan’s Heroes.” “A forensic analysis of the hard drives found that they were loaded with ‘malicious’ software and that inmates used the computers to apply for credit cards, research tax-refund fraud, search inmate records, and obtain prison access passes for restricted areas.”
