But the “reality show” press told us the stories it wanted to tell, regardless of the facts. Because that’s what it does.

21ST CENTURY PARENTING: Parents Are Bankrupting Themselves To Look Adequate.

On the East Coast, affluent parents of bright children explain that they absolutely must live in the best possible school district, and send their kid to the most prestigious possible college. In “flyover country,” parents explain that they have to have a nice new car for the kids, because safety. Also a bevy of very expensive activities, from travel sports to marching band, because otherwise their lives will be blighted. Auto accidents are declining, and bright, motivated kids are probably going to do OK no matter where they go to school. Yet parents can convince themselves to spend near-infinite amounts seeking marginal improvements.

The problem is worst on the coasts, where those amounts really do seem to spiral towards infinity (but of course, incomes are higher there too). But it’s everywhere; people are locked in a status arms race that somehow often comes to focus on the happiness or safety of their kids.

I’m not deriding those folks, only pointing out the behavior. Because the only people who can stop the self-bankrupting arms race are the people participating in it. And the only way they can do so is to start deliberately sitting out the competition. Untold generations of human beings have lived to adulthood without the blessings of a brand-new minivan, a travel soccer trophy or a Harvard education. Modern children raised without them will probably also be fine.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure how much good it does to point this out.

Neither am I, but what can you do?

TREVOR PHILLIPS: Britain ‘sleepwalking to catastrophe’ over race.

Britain risks “flames” of racial and religious conflict because of a “liberal self-delusion” over the impact of mass immigration, the former head of the equality watchdog Trevor Phillips claims today.

In a startling assault on decades of official multiculturalism and diversity policy, the founding chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission argues the UK is being allowed to “sleepwalk to catastrophe” by leaders too “touchy”, “smug”, “complacent” and “squeamish” to talk about race.

Drawing a direct parallel with Enoch Powell’s notorious “rivers of blood” speech, he likens Britain’s politicians, media and educated elite in general to the Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned, unable even to recognise the “dark side of the diverse society”.

Ominous “muttering in the pub or grumbling at the school gate” about foreigners could, he insists, be the first signs of a backlash many thought could not happen in Britain because of a history of relative success in integrating new arrivals.

Significantly, he claims the arrival of some Muslim groups in particular who are actively “resistant to the traditional process of integration” threatens to shake the foundations of “liberal democracy” itself.

Well, given that it was a deliberate, secret effort to change the nature of the British electorate without telling voters, a backlash would be well-deserved.

These sorts of posts might feel like a victory of sort to feminists. Women, refusing to back down, are demanding appropriate treatment and behavior from their spouses. For most of human history women have been subservient in marriages (and in every other role), but not today!

Except that’s not actually feminism. Feminism seeks equality between the sexes (in this case, the spouses). Imagine, for a moment, what equality would look like in this circumstance. If husbands posted pictures of their wives holding signs their husbands wrote with their offenses: “Even though we just paid off our credit cards, I just had to buy a new dress for my friend’s wedding.” “I watch nothing but horrible reality TV but claim I’m doing book club reading when my friends ask.”

We’re thankfully in an era where such behavior would be called out for what it is: misogyny. So too should we call “husband shaming” for what it is: man-hating.

The proper response to this behavior is to immediately file for divorce. You can’t have a good marriage without respect. But I imagine that men who’d be willing to end things over being treated this way, don’t get treated this way.

And as for that “feminism seeks equality between the sexes,” well, not so much, actually.

WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING? War On Pain Treatment Fills ERs with Pain Patients.

It was bad enough that Western New York was dealing with an opioid epidemic, but that crisis is being compounded by another one involving pain management patients.

After the indictment of Dr. Eugene Gosy, the doctor’s pain treatment center in Williamsville closed leaving many of his 10,000 active patients scrambling for answers.

On top of that, patients are complaining that primary care providers are not willing to take on pain management duties and forcing them to go to Emergency Rooms as prescriptions run out and concerns about opioid medication withdrawal increase.

“We are seeing an increase of two to three times the normal patients presenting with these type requests to our emergency rooms,” said Dr. Brian D’Arcy, Senior Vice President – Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer for Catholic Health.

Dr. D’Arcy said all Catholic Health hospitals are seeing the increase and the patients coming in are from all walks of life and represent various age groups.

Our political class seems capable only of inaction, and overreaction.
