OF COURSE IT DOES: Ashe Schow: Women work more hours than men? Depends on the definition of ‘work.’
A new report spreading across the Internet seems designed to make women feel as though they’re being mistreated. And as with nearly all reports of this nature, some of the details are being left out.
Take this NBC News article on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2016, which boasts that “Women Work 39 Days More Than Men Per Year.” Nowhere in the article does NBC acknowledge that the extra work women are doing is household chores.
Instead, the article gives the impression that women are staying at the office longer but being paid less (because the report and news articles about it continue to spread the myth of the gender “wage gap” without explaining in detail that the gap is due largely to choices many women make and not discrimination). In reality, women are working 50 minutes more a day because of unpaid housework.
The BBC and others at least acknowledge this and point out that men do 34 percent more paid work than women on average. That’s confirmed in other reports. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds year after year that men report working more paid hours a week than women.
It’s also confirmed in a new Gallup report that builds on the BLS estimates. Gallup found that 47 percent of men report working more than 40 hours a week, while just 30 percent of women say the same. Gallup is quick to note, however, that this doesn’t mean men work harder than women.
The rule on gender research, as Ann Althouse noted years ago, is that you can find any difference between men and women that you want, so long as you portray it in ways that establish women’s superiority. Or victimhood.

JUSTICE: Santa Ana to pay $100,000 to pot shop at center of controversial police raid.
The city will pay a Santa Ana marijuana dispensary $100,000 to settle a federal lawsuit in connection with a controversial raid last year where police officers were caught on hidden video eating snacks and making disparaging remarks about a handicapped woman.
As part of the settlement agreement finalized earlier this month, the city of Santa Ana will also dismiss misdemeanor charges against a dozen people accused of unlawfully operating Sky High Holistic at the time of the May 26, 2015 raid.
The settlement proceeds will be divided among Marla and David James, who are volunteers at Sky High, and Dr. Bradley Idelshon, a physician whose nearby office was left without power and water during the raid and is not affiliated with the dispensary, its attorney Matthew Pappas said.

COMMUNIST RULE RETURNS TO COMMUNIST CHINA: Xi Jinping more powerful than ever after being named ruling party’s ‘core’
When you are “the core” of the Communist Party, you aren’t just another leader — your will is now law.
“The whole ting about being ‘the core’ is that you can get policies done,” David Zweig, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology professor, told CNN.
“The risk is that you will take power to yourself, undermine the power bases of the people beneath you. Give him greater authority to replace people who are allied with Jiang Zemin or their own networks.”
Zweig said there had already been a push to make Xi “the core” in early 2016 but it hadn’t succeeded.
“Everyone in the Politburo has their networks, even in the Standing Committee of the Politburo, so if you give all the power to one guy you give him the power to push your people out and push his people through,” he said.
Xi has been following the Augustus Caesar path to absolute power — collecting enough official titles and powers to put a legal veneer on his emerging dictatorship.

ENDLESS STRUGGLE: Syria rebels ‘in push to break Aleppo siege’
A UK-based monitoring group said the rebels had fired “hundreds” of missiles into western Aleppo, killing at least 15 civilians.
They are also reported to have targeted al-Nayrab military airport to the east.
About 275,000 people have been besieged in the east by pro-government forces for several months.
Syria and its ally Russia have recently intensified air strikes on the east.
The attacks are so far coming from rebels outside Aleppo but it is understood that rebels inside the city will join the offensive.
“All the revolutionary factions, without exception, are participating in the battle,” the military spokesman for the Fastaqim faction inside the city said, AP news agency reports.
What’s left of the Syrian Army doesn’t have the strength to take the rest of the city any time soon, and the rebels can’t move without getting pounded by Russian warplanes.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: Yale Daily News: Election 2016: Conservative views considered unwelcome at Yale.
Despite ongoing campus discussions about free speech, Yale remains deeply unwelcoming to students with conservative political beliefs, according to a News survey distributed earlier this month.
Nearly 75 percent of 2,054 respondents who completed the survey — representing views across the political spectrum — said they believe Yale does not provide a welcoming environment for conservative students to share their opinions on political issues. Among the 11.86 percent of respondents who described themselves as either “conservative” or “very conservative,” the numbers are even starker: Nearly 95 percent said the Yale community does not welcome their opinions. About two-thirds of respondents who described themselves as “liberal” or “very liberal” said Yale is not welcoming to conservative students.
“Anybody who supports Donald Trump or is a Republican is just hated,” said one respondent, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of backlash from liberal students.
Someone should ask President Peter Salovey: Why does Yale foster such a culture of hate?
THE OLD “REPUBLICANS POUNCE” TROPE: Trump seizes on leaked memo to blast ‘corrupt’ Clinton World.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday jumped on a leaked memo revealing the interplay between the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton family’s business interests, calling the revelations “outright corrupt.”
At a rally in Springfield, Ohio, Trump addressed a 12-page internal memo leaked Thursday by WikiLeaks and penned by Clinton confidante Doug Band outlining his “unorthodox” dual role within Clinton World. Band was principal for Teneo, a private consulting firm tasked with raising millions for the Clinton Foundation, while also helping former President Bill Clinton with for-profit opportunities.
“The more emails Wikileaks releases, the more lines between the Clinton Foundation, her State Department and Clinton’s personal businesses, they all get blurred,” Trump said.
“We read about Clinton confidant Doug Band bragging he had funneled tens of millions of dollars to Bill Clinton Inc. through the foundation donations, paid speeches and consulting contracts. Mr. Band called the arrangement ‘unorthodox.’ The rest of us call it outright corrupt.”Trump’s campaign sent out a statement after the rally that reiterated his criticisms of the interplay revealed in the memo.
Trump has repeatedly accused Hillary Clinton of “pay-to-play” schemes while serving as secretary of State, alleging she gave access to foreign governments and corporations who donated to the Clinton Foundation.

TEN YEARS AGO ON INSTAPUNDIT:
Maybe I’m racially insensitive, but I don’t get the uproar over the ad in which a hot chick says she met Harold E. Ford, the Tennessee Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, at a Playboy party and asks him to call her. A Vanderbilt expert on political advertising says it “makes the Willie Horton ad look like child’s play.” Really? It’s worse for voters to think that beautiful women want to have sex with you that it is for them to believe that you let a dangerous criminal out of prison to commit rape and murder? I think Michael Dukakis would disagree. He could have benefited from this sort of slander, if anyone would have believed it.
I agree. As I’ve said before, I think the Playboy thing helps Ford more than it hurts him.
UPDATE: Reader Janice Lyons says it’s not about the bimbo:
By focusing on the blonde the Dems are either being really really clever, or are really really dumb.
It’s the WHOLE AD that has the bang. It is not only hilarious, it’s points to Ford’s positions (I assume, since I’m not a Volunteer), which when voiced in their implications, are pretty damning.
Perhaps by calling race! sex! – and – gasp! bimbo! they are trying to divert attention from the problem of Ford’s positions (the actual content of the ad, not his sex life) with [self righteous] indignation.
Surely more than a few people see the ad, snicker at the blonde, and wonder if Ford really does think they own too many guns, it’s no big whoop that the family farm which has now become a developer’s (and the tax office’s) dream can will be lost to the family because of property and death taxes, that people who produce stability in the society pay higher taxes, that the US should stop trying to slow down the nuclear train to hell, and that people committed to blowing up as many Americans and as many America ideas and things as they can should have the right to be treated as citizens, and better.
That’s what the Dems are really worried about. Or should be anyway. That’s the message of the ad the Dems are trying to distract from while “whining” about the bare shouldered blonde.
Well, of course, the complaints just caused many, many more people to see the ad. Smart? We’ll see.
And I think Dukakis would have picked up at least 3 states if it had come out that he’d partied with Playboy bunnies . . . .
