CIVIL RIGHTS UPDATE: University of Texas at Austin to allow students to carry handguns on campus.
In 2015, the Republican-led Texas Legislature voted to allow guns within buildings on public college campuses throughout the state.
The bill requires a university president to adopt and implement the law. Open carry on campus is still prohibited. According to the University of Texas at Austin, since the law says you have to be 21 before applying for a concealed carry license, fewer than 1% of students will qualify for a license to carry a concealed weapon in classrooms or academic buildings.
Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Utah, Wisconsin and Oregon also allow students to carry concealed handguns on campus.
But the move by the University of Texas is controversial. In October, CNN reported more than 280 professors and counting have signed a petition calling the new legislation a “direct assault on our free speech rights.”
The possibility of guns in the classroom is going to “interfere with students’ free speech in the classroom,” a place already often tense when certain issues are raised, said Ellen Spiro, professor at UT’s Department of Radio-TV-Film and co-founder of the newly formed Gun Free UT.
That’s an embarrassingly stupid argument, particularly at a time when free speech on campuses is under assault from lefties all over.

WAS JUSTICE SCALIA MURDERED??? “No, of course he wasn’t murdered. What’re you, nuts? But the question perfectly represents the disconnect between the grave stakes of the upcoming election and the frivolous level of our current political discourse,” Andrew Klavan writes.
With our nation in grave danger of going “back and to the left…back and to the left” once again in November, read the whole thing.
Related: As Jonah Goldberg wrote the day before Scalia passed away, “Conspiratorial thinking really isn’t about politics, it’s about life. And it has no permanent ideological home. Indeed, ‘conspiratorial thinking’ isn’t even the right term. A better one might be ‘gnosticism,'” and it’s rampant in today’s political world; Jonah’s article is also worth revisiting as the Scalia truthers begin to form.

It’s hard to swallow demands for deference from a party that for seven years has cheered Obama’s serial constitutional depredations: his rewriting the immigration laws by executive order (stayed by the courts); his reordering the energy economy by regulation (stayed by the courts); his enacting the nuclear deal with Iran, the most important treaty of this generation, without the required two-thirds of the Senate (by declaring it an executive agreement).
Minority Leader Harry Reid complains about the Senate violating precedent if it refuses a lame-duck nominee. This is rich. It is Reid who just two years ago overthrew all precedent by abolishing the filibuster for most judicial and high executive appointments. In the name of what grand constitutional principle did Reid resort to a parliamentary maneuver so precedent-shattering that it was called the nuclear option? None. He did it in order to pack the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Columbia with liberals who would reliably deflect challenges to Obamacare.
On Tuesday, Obama loftily called upon Congress to rise above ideology and partisanship in approving his nominee. When asked how he could square that with his 2006 support of a filibuster to stop the appointment of Samuel Alito, Obama replied with a four-minute word salad signifying nothing. There is no answer. It was situational constitutional principle, i.e., transparent hypocrisy.
As I said, this is all about raw power. When the Democrats had it, they used it.
Those last two sentences ought to stiffen the spine of every wavering Republican Senator — but we’ll see.
FINALLY: NEW LEFT-WING CULT GETS ITS OWN WEIRDLY SINISTER ICONOGRAPHY. Allahpundit has further thoughts on Shepard Fairey’s creepy Bernie Sanders logo. As Allah writes, “the design is actually a terrible representation of his candidacy, precisely because it’s so cold and graphically stark:”
True to populist form, Sanders’s campaign ads have been all about warmth and people. His first spot, the Simon and Garfunkel ad, mixed crowd shots with quaint images of Americans working on farms. The next major spot highlighted the supposed diversity of his coalition by combining shots of people’s faces from across the demographic spectrum — young and old, black and white, men and women. Again: People power. The third one that’s gotten buzz is the one featuring Eric Garner’s daughter talking about her father’s death. It’s intensely personal. The message in all of this, obviously, is that Sanders’s campaign isn’t about him but about all of the Americans who’ll be empowered by his movement. Socialism isn’t something to fear, it’s a brotherhood to be embraced. That’s a strong message and the ads are well done. Now here comes Fairey, the Obama idolater, to strip the humanity out of that message and reduce it to some chilly modern version of a WPA poster.

MILO YIANNOPOULOS: Feminists ‘Waging War on Working Class Men.’
“It’s as much a class war as it is a gender war” stated Yiannopoulos. “Much of it is perpetrated by white middle-class women who are the most privileged group in the history of our civilisation, of our species. They are the most privileged people ever to have lived[…] sort of waging war on working-class men. Now most of my readers fall into that second category, and I see the sort of injustice perpetrated on them and the sort of language used about them.”
Indeed.
THE DESTROYER COMETH: “The key to Trump’s strength, which buttresses all his outrageousness, is that his supporters want someone to blow up the system. So there’s almost nothing he can say or do that will discredit him in their eyes, and the least destructive scenario for his defeat — Trump blows himself up — will take some doing on his part,” Rich Lowry writes. “It’s all very entertaining — but so are demolition derbies.”

21ST CENTURY HEADLINES: Scientists created a three-armed cyborg to play the drums like no human can.
Georgia Tech researchers have built a robotic arm that attaches to a drummer’s shoulder and plays along. This allows drummers — now equipped with three arms — to play sequences that two-armed humans can’t even attempt.
“It’s a richer and more sophisticated rhythm because you can hit one more thing,” said Gil Weinberg, director of the Center for Music Technology at Georgia Tech. The robotic arm is capable of hitting a drum up to 20 times per second, a rate that’s impossible for humans. And it never needs a break.
The computerized arm listens to the sound of the human playing and improvises to accompany the beat. Currently it can’t be programmed to play specific songs. The robotic arm will generally mirror the volume and speed that the human is playing.
This is just the beginning.
