LAW SCHOOL DIVERSITY UPDATE: McGinnis: Law Schools Should Give Greater Weight To Objective Data In Faculty Hiring To Combat Bias Against Conservative/Libertarian Law Profs. “In a fascinating article, James Phillips has focused on the productivity, citations, and credentials of scholars at the top sixteen law schools. His analysis suggests that conservatives and libertarians are more productive, better cited, and, with one important exception, better credentialed than other scholars. The powerful combination of these findings is thus consistent with the hypothesis that conservatives suffer discrimination in hiring, perhaps particularly in the lateral market when productivity and citation data are very visible. It is as if they are competing in a race with an extra weight on their backs. … [T]he normative implication that I draw is that in hiring schools should weigh more objective data, like productivity and citations counts more heavily and take less account of their faculty’s more subjective impression of scholarship.”

TO BE FAIR, ACTORS AND RACE-ACTIVISTS AREN’T VERY GOOD AT MATH, AND HAVE NO INCENTIVE TO BE: How racially skewed are the Oscars? “In fact, as our analysis of film casts and awards shows, the number of black actors winning Oscars in this century has been pretty much in line with the size of America’s overall black population. . . . Blacks are 12.6% of the American population, and 10% of Oscar nominations since 2000 have gone to black actors. But just 3% of nominations have gone to their Hispanic peers (16% of the population), 1% to those with Asian backgrounds, and 2% to those of other heritage (see chart).”

CATHY YOUNG: PLAYING POLITICS WITH ONLINE ABUSE:

Whatever one may think of Yiannopoulos, Twitter’s attempt to—in his words—sit him “at the naughty table” was both nonsensical and troubling. First of all, if verification is about confirming identity, what’s it got to do with Twitter rule violations? Did Yiannopoulos stop being himself when he did whatever naughty thing he did? (Ha!) Is verification a badge of good behavior or elite status? An investigation by Adland reveals that it’s often connected to knowing someone at Twitter if you’re an individual, and advertising on Twitter if you’re a business.

With lefty organizations, everything is ultimately about being part of the in-group, or not. And Twitter is quite plainly a lefty organization. In unrelated news, its stock has tanked lately.

BREAKING — EXCLUSIVE VIDEO — MONSTER LIZARD RAVAGES EAST COAST!

(H/T: Jonah Goldberg.)

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I GIVE YOU THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, DONALD TRUMP: Whoopi Goldberg: If Trump wins, maybe it’s time for me to leave America.

And thus Trump’s next campaign ad writes itself. As one of the commenters at Hot Air writes, “Can we get the entire panel of The View (past and present) to make that promise? That should put Trump over 60% nationally.”

NEWS YOU CAN USE: Peter Egan: Buying a new house? You only need to care about the garage. All of my houses have had good garages, but I’m not sure I agree with this. Then again, I’m not Peter Egan. “‘Barb would probably prefer not to have the living quarters above the garage,’ I added hastily. ‘The smell of arc welding on a race car trailer at night always wakes her out of a sound sleep because she thinks the house is on fire. She’s also sensitive to the sound of an air chisel, like when you’re trying to remove a rusted header pipe and muffler from an old cast iron exhaust manifold and the whole thing suddenly breaks loose and crashes to the floor. Paint fumes are another problem. Especially your acrylic enamels, which seem to kill the house plants.'”

NEWS YOU CAN USE: The Right Way To Stretch Before Exercise.

For generations, gym students were taught to stretch before working out or playing games. Then the practice fell out of favor: Studies seemed to show that such ‘‘static’’ stretching (holding a pose for anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes) temporarily reduces muscular power, weakens athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. So most fitness experts currently advise against static stretches before exercise. But now a comprehensive new review of decades’ worth of research indicates that they might not be such a bad idea after all.

Huh. I thought the science was settled.

AND WHEN THE MORNING LIGHT COMES SHINING IN, I’M GONNA GET UP AND DO IT AGAIN. AMEN. Blue Origin: Launch, Land, Repeat. “The very same New Shepard booster that flew above the Karman line and then landed vertically at its launch site last November has now flown and landed again, demonstrating reuse. This time, New Shepard reached an apogee of 333,582 feet (101.7 kilometers) before both capsule and booster gently returned to Earth for recovery and reuse.”
