LOOKING BEHIND THE CURTAIN: How an Omaha Indian became a symbol of the American dream.

Joseph was one of a delegation of Omahas who went to Washington in 1861. What he found there surprised him but also made him hopeful. “The whites,” he told his tribe members when he returned, “were not great and powerful because of any magic power, but because they all worked and sent their children to school.”

ZOMBIE WRITES THAT TRUMP’S VICTORY IS A PIVOTAL TURNING POINT IN HUMAN HISTORY:

The results of these decades of indoctrination was plainly visible in the college students of today, who are all so left-wing by default that they consider standard Marxism too old-fashioned and conservative. Taking this into consideration, and remembering that the adults of today were the radical students of the recent past, it had seemed that these decades of indoctrination had been resoundingly successful, and that the U.S. electorate had swung wildly to the left, never to swing back, just as the Gramscian brainwashers had been planning and implementing for the last 50 or more years.

Ooops

And then November 8, 2016 happened, and BOOM: It was all revealed to be a lie. Not only did the indoctrination fail, but the general impression that the relentless indoctrination had always been successful was itself a gigantic meta-deception.

All the chatter and statistics and talk show “experts” proclaiming that America had forever swung Democratic? ALL LIES.

All the slanted polls, which were intended to convince everyone that Hillary was inevitable? ALL LIES.

The derision of Trump as a ludicrous fringe candidate and his supporters as wild-eyed extremists? ALL LIES.

And it’s not just that they were all lies — they were lies that had no effect. Somehow, without anyone noticing, a majority of the American populace had evolved a new immunity to progressive disinformation.

So we’re not all socialists now? File this infamous early 2009 cover with the rest of the DNC-MSM’s proverbial fake news:

FRESH NEWS IN AN OLD KNOXVILLE MURDER CASE: Tennessee Supreme Court upholds death sentence for Lemaricus Davidson.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for the main suspect in the 2007 murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom in Knoxville.

Lemaricus Davidson sought to overturn his convictions on counts including first degree murder and two death sentences. . . .

Christian and Newsom went missing in January 2007 in North Knoxville. Newsom’s burned body was found the next day by the railroad tracks near Davidson’s home. He had been brutally raped and shot three times. Later, Christian’s vehicle as found down the street and police found a bank envelope in her back seat with Davidson’s fingerprint.

Police then searched Davidson’s house and found Christian’s body in a garbage can in the kitchen, beaten, raped and suffocated to death.

Davidson was found guilty in October 2009 of multiple counts of first degree felony murder, first degree premeditated murder, especially aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated rape, facilitation of aggravated rape, and theft of property. He was then given two death sentences. The Tennessee Court of Appeals upheld the verdict and sentences last year.

A very ugly case that got comparatively little national attention.

ILYA SOMIN looks at a timely book from Sanford Levinson, Nullification and Secession in Modern Constitutional Thought. “While many people associate secessionism with the Confederacy and efforts to protect slavery, and nullification with state resistance to the civil rights movement, this book shows that both tactics were often advocated by political movements on both the right and the left. In the antebellum period for example, nullificationist tactics were adopted by both southerners seeking to protect slavery, and northerners trying to resist the federal Fugitive Slave Act. Like many political strategies, nullification and secession can be used to promote both good causes and evil ones.”

FAKE’ NEWS AND THE VICTORIAN GENTLEMAN. In the latest issue of Commentary, Matthew Continetti writes:

Why the obsession with fake news? Readers with long memories will note that the mainstream media did not use this term to describe the work of Janet Cooke, Stephen Glass, and Jayson Blair, or the reporters who vilified and maligned the Duke Lacrosse Team, or the disgusting fabrications Rolling Stone told about fraternity life at the University of Virginia, or the myths parroted on CNN that Michael Brown shouted “hands up, don’t shoot” before he was killed in Ferguson. Nor was fake news a problem in 2012 when a man named Floyd Corkins said he shot an employee of the conservative Family Research Council in the arm because the Southern Poverty Legal Center had accused it of being a hate group. And yet four years later, when an armed man showed up at a D.C. pizzeria after reading online that it might be connected to human trafficking, the mainstream media’s quest to anathematize fake news intensified. (Luckily, no one was harmed.)

What makes the controversy salient is the uncertain social position of the mainstream media. The press, Tom Wolfe wrote, is a Victorian Gentleman, the arbiter of manners and fashion, the judge of right conduct and good breeding. But the fragmentation of the media landscape, the decentralization of the Internet and social media, and the rise of Donald Trump have set this Victorian Gentleman back on his heels. Long ago he changed his job description and went from telling his readers what had happened to telling them what to think. And the fact that so many people now have the means to disagree with him, to challenge him, to speak unmediated and uncensored, is profoundly disturbing to his sense of authority and self-worth.

A notion that’s terrified old media, from the moment Matt Drudge arrived on the scene — and made them old media.

FCC NEWS: Trump appointee to FCC could put the brakes on Wheeler cyber initiatives.

One of the chief architects of cybersecurity policy during the Obama years — Federal Communications Commission Chairman Thomas Wheeler — last week announced he will leave the FCC on Jan. 20, clearing the way for a Donald Trump appointee who may put the brakes on a couple of cyber initiatives that have roiled industry.

Wheeler is a one-time telecom executive whose cyber and other policies at the FCC often put him at odds with his former industry.

President-elect Trump will choose the next FCC chairman, and Commissioner Ajit Pai, a Republican appointee, is frequently mentioned in telecom circles as a possible candidate.

That would be a welcome move to many in the industry, as Pai, an amiable former Verizon executive and FCC staffer, opposed some of Wheeler’s actions on cyber as going beyond the commission’s statutory authority to set requirements in this area.

I like Ajit Pai. Here’s one reason why.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Electoral College votes to make Donald Trump president.

UPDATE: Congratulations, President-Elect Trump: “Happily, the effort to bribe or threaten electors into subverting the will of their voters came to nothing. As of the latest count, only two Trump electors, both from Texas, were faithless, while four Democrat electors voted for someone other than Hillary Clinton. It is a fitting end to a deeply contemptible and anti-democratic campaign by far too many Democrats.”

ANOTHER UPDATE: Bill Clinton was impeached on this day 18 years ago.

ROGUE WON: 3 faithless electors vote for Colin Powell in Washington state.

Reports from Washington showed more faithless electors went against Clinton, continuing a trend seen in Maine, Minnesota and Colorado.

The votes were cast for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in Maine and Minnesota — both of which were thrown out — and it’s unknown whom the elector in Colorado chose. His vote was also thrown out.

The votes in Washington will not be thrown out, as that state does not require electors to vote from among the two top vote getters. That means Powell and Faith Spotted Eagle, a Native American elder, will be among the candidates getting votes.

Democrats used to say Colin Powell lied to get us into war with Iraq, and now they’re voting for him over Hillary Clinton.

UPDATE: Heh.
