ELLEN PODGOR AT THE WHITE COLLAR CRIME BLOG: Should Governor McDonnell’s Case Be Retried?

This is an opportunity for the government to step in and accept the Court’s decision and be responsible. And the responsible thing to do here is dismiss!

There are many criminal acts occurring in society that warrant prosecution. Companies are in need of computer laws being enforced. Corruption is without doubt a problem and when someone takes money for doing a specific official act, then prosecution is needed.

But being a nice guy and listening to constituents, trying to promote their businesses, and sticking to one’s campaign slogan – “Bob’s for Jobs” – should not be crime.

Well, the whole point was to turn Virginia over to the Clinton machine before 2016, and with that accomplished there’s really no reason to proceed.

TIME-WARNER-HBO-CNN SPOKESMAN JOHN OLIVER CALLS BORIS JOHNSON A ‘SHAVED ORANGUTAN’ AND DAVID CAMERON A ‘PIG-F***ER’ IN NINE-MINUTE ANTI-BREXIT RANT ON US TV: “Prominent pro-Brexit politician and leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage was savaged as having a ‘punchable face.’”

Oliver is employed by the same corporation that issued an on-air apology minutes after a guest on a CNN program used the term “crosshairs” during a segment in January of 2011, when the left’s modified limited hangout required claiming that Sarah Palin’s election clipart magically led to the shooting a Democratic senator and Republican-appointed federal judge.

He’s also employed by the same corporation that led an on-air jeremiad against “bullying,” only to bully pro-traditional marriage Florida AG Pam Bondi for no particular reason on air after an Islamic terrorist shot up an Orlando disco this month, and to tear into UKIP politician Ray Finch for daring to support Brexit. As Rod Dreher wrote last week, “Had he been on for a minute more, [Christiane Amanpour] would have blamed Orlando on Nigel Farage.”

To put it succinctly: “To Hell with You People.”

Update: “BREAKING: Guy who left Britain is upset Britain left the EU.” Heh. As Iowahawk recently tweeted, “a British version of John Oliver [covering American politics] would be a nightly BBC show with Larry the Cable Guy talking about how bad Britain sucks.”

OF COURSE, THE REAL MISSION WAS TO PUT THE STATE IN THE HANDS OF A HILLARY CRONY BEFORE THE 2016 ELECTION, SO OVERALL THE PROSECUTION WAS STILL A SUCCESS: Supreme Court vacates Bob McDonnell’s convictions; says concern was not with ‘tawdry tales’ but with government’s ‘boundless interpretation’ of bribery law.

Like the lawfare against Tom Delay and Rick Perry. The GOP needs to punch back twice as hard on this stuff if it wants to win.

CNN ECO-WARRIOR CHRIS CUOMO WAS IN ‘FULL-BLOWN DRAG RACE’ BEFORE CAR CRASH:

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo crashed his beloved 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible in Southampton recently when, sources said, he was drag racing the hot rod. But a friend of the anchor insisted Cuomo never actually raced the car and was just goofing around for photos before he clumsily cracked his radiator by hitting a parked German import.

Cuomo’s wife, Cristina, hosted a chic party for her Beach magazine at Jue Lan Club over Memorial Day weekend, and sources told Page Six the night ended with Chris “drag racing.”

“It was a full-blown drag race . . . Everybody heard it,” said a source. “He lost control and crashed into a parked Mercedes. He was lucky because it was his friend’s car.”

Late last year on CNN, Cuomo hectored Rep. Steve King (R-IA) on air, asking, “Why won’t you get on board with the science” of global warming? Perhaps King is waiting for Cuomo himself to get onboard. To paraphrase the Insta-Professor, I’ll believe global warming is a crisis, when the people who tell me it’s a crisis act like it’s a crisis themselves – and cease drag racing in their ’69 Firebirds. Do it for Gaia, Chris!

Or do it to avoid the appearance of doubleplus ungood crimethink: “Dem Party Platform Calls For Prosecuting Global Warming Skeptics.” And the heretic in the photo below looks awfully skeptical:

WHY GEORGE WILL’S MORAL NARCISSISM MATTERS: Roger Simon explores “The Discrete Charm of the Beltway Bourgeoisie.”

Roger’s new book, which hit the streets (and Amazon’s Kindle servers) earlier this month is I Know Best: How Moral Narcissism Is Destroying Our Republic, If It Hasn’t Already. Perhaps George Will should peruse a copy in his study?

In addition to his ongoing promotional tour, Roger will be discussing his new book in person this December at Bullets & Bourbon in Texas.

WE MUST DISSOLVE THE PEOPLE AND ELECT ANOTHER: Hillary’s Immigration Unilateralism:

The Supreme Court has halted President Obama’s executive order that rewrites immigration law and grants quasi-legal status to nearly five million people in the United States illegally. Despite the President’s rather sanctimonious protestations—“Congress is not going to be able to ignore America forever… we get these spasms of politics around immigration and fear-mongering, and then our traditions and our history and our better impulses kick in”—the ruling actually represents a step toward the restoration of one of the most important American traditions: a limited executive restrained by a system of checks and balances.
As Francis Fukuyama wrote in these pages two years ago: President Obama’s executive orders go far beyond “the implementation of a law passed by Congress.” Instead, he “is in effect making law unilaterally and flying in the face of the expressed will of the people.”

Even putting aside the procedural questions, President Obama’s end-run around Congress has proven particularly corrosive to the fraying political fabric at a time of populist unrest, discontent about mass immigration, and a widespread sense among ordinary voters that their leaders are unaccountable. A President Hillary Clinton who fulfills her promise to “expand” President Obama’s immigration unilateralism will be playing with fire.

But of course a Hillary Clinton presidency is not guaranteed, in which case it’s possible that the President’s allies will end up thanking the Supreme Court’s four conservatives for declining to rubber-stamp President’s immigration diktat. Because a President Trump (or some future nationalist) claiming “broad authority over immigration policy” would be unlikely to share President Obama’s right-side-of-history pieties about the urgent necessity of amnesty, and the fundamental wrongness of people who disagree.

Indeed.

HMM: Erdogan’s office confirms Russia apology.

Turkish presidential sources confirm to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet that Erdogan apologized to Putin for the downing of a Russian warplane in November.

It remains unclear whether there was Israeli diplomacy involved in the detente between Russia and Turkey, but the apology came just after Israel and Turkey announced a deal to restore ties.
