RED LINES: ISIS Used Chemical Arms at Least 52 Times in Syria and Iraq, Report Says.
“The coalition is concerned about ISIL’s use of chemical weapons,” Col. John Dorrian, a military spokesman in Iraq, said in an email on Monday, using another name for the Islamic State. “ISIL has used them in Iraq and Syria in the past, and we expect them to continue employing these types of weapons.”
Colonel Dorrian said that the Islamic State’s ability to use chemical weapons is “rudimentary,” and that American, Iraqi and other allied troops are equipped to deal with the impact of these chemical attacks — typically rockets, mortar shells or artillery shells filled with chemical agents. The effects of these chemical munitions thus far have been limited to the immediate area where they land.
Given enough time and space, ISIS’s chemical efforts will become less rudimentary.

WHEN ACADEMIA TAKES SIDES: UNH Professors Call For Expulsion Of Pro-Trump Counter-Protesters. “You see, while professors at the school cry foul over two peaceful counter-protesters, some investigators have done a bit of digging and found out that the folks behind the rally apparently broke some laws while organizing it. Kevin Landrigan, the New Hampshire Union Leader, has criticized staff at the UNH Women’s Studies Program for Facebook posts that clearly show tax funds being allocated towards making signs for the event. . . . What’s more, an email from WikiLeaks shows a UNH higher-up contacting John Podesta himself asking how he might be “helpful” from his ‘perch in New Hampshire.'”

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS. Dan Rather Melts Down at Fear Trump Is Endangering Founding Principles; Urges Press to Rise Up:
Disgraced former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather was at it again on Tuesday pontificating on Facebook post as he urged Americans and particularly journalists to rise up and not “remain seated or silent” against concerning aspects of President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda and neo-Nazis saluting Trump’s win (in another attempt to normalize their line of hate through free media).
Speaking as if we were on the edge of a massive purge or tragedy, Rather pontificated that “HIstory [sic] will demand to know which side were you on” because “[t]his is not a question of politics or party or even policy” but “a question about the very fundamentals of our beautiful experiment in a pluralistic democracy ruled by law.”
In 2009, Rather headlined a $200-a-person fundraiser for the Nation magazine; as even Wikipedia notes regarding the magazine’s far left ideology:
In 1900, Henry Villard’s son, Oswald Garrison Villard, inherited the magazine and the Evening Post, selling off the latter in 1918. Thereafter, he remade The Nation into a current affairs publication and gave it an anti-classical liberal orientation: Oswald Villard welcomed the New Deal and supported the nationalization of industries – thus reversing the meaning of “liberalism” as the founders of The Nation would have understood the term, from a belief in a smaller and more restricted government to a belief in a larger and less restricted government.
And very little has changed at the Nation since. Five years previously, Rather blew up his career in de facto support of the socialist presidential candidate who made his bones insisting that American soldiers “had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.”

CNBC today: Dow closes above 19,000 as stocks notch record closing highs. “The Dow Jones industrial average rose about 70 points, closing above 19,000 for the first time ever, with Home Depot contributing the most gains. . . . The S&P 500 closed over 2,200 for the first time, as telecommunications rose about 2.1 percent to lead advancers. The Nasdaq composite also closed at all-time highs, rising approximately a third of a percent.”

WORST. IDEA. EVER. Scotch Whisky Makers to Appeal Ruling on Minimum Alcohol Prices.
To combat alcohol abuse, Scotland’s Parliament in May 2012 passed a law establishing a 50-pence floor on per-unit alcohol prices but the measure has since been tied up in court after being attacked by the alcohol industry, which claims it won’t stem heavy drinking but instead force responsible drinkers to pay more, and that any such measure is illegal.
The industry worries that the measure, if implemented, will pave the way for a wave of restrictive legislation in England and around the world.
What has become of Scotland, birthplace of Adam Smith?
BUT THAT WOULD INTERFERE WITH THE SMUGNESS:
For now, liberal media is filled with doomsy prognostics and rise-up protest pieces as progressives exhort their people to form a sort of moral fifth column against the Trump regime. It’s a group, says Guardian writer Steven Thrasher, that will give “hell to anyone who tries to normalize the racist, misogynist, xenophobic bully who will soon be president.”
But if they truly want change, the left needs to move beyond a feelings-based platform for something far more tangible and effective.
At best, social justice folks should trade their victim-based ideology for a movement far more rooted in accountability and achievement rather than suffering. At the very least, progressives must learn to contend with — and ultimately sympathize with — feelings other than their own.
He’s right, but I’m not holding my breath on this one.
