THE HILL: Senate GOP leader: Release Clinton’s FBI interview.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wants Hillary Clinton’s interview with the FBI made public as GOP lawmakers demand more information on the investigation into her private email server.

“It’s pretty clear … that the American people would like to see what Hillary Clinton said to the FBI,” McConnell told reporters during his weekly press conference.

McConnell and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) noted that lying to the agency was a punishable offense.

“There’s no particular penalty for lying to the public, unless the public get tired of it, but there’s a real penalty for lying about the FBI,” McConnell said.

McConnell’s comments came after Cornyn voiced support for releasing any information tied to the FBI’s probe, including the 3.5-hour interview that took place days before Comey’s announcement.

“Only when we get the complete investigation out, including that three-and-a-half hour interview with the FBI, will the American people have the information they need in order to make a final judgement,” the Senate’s No. 2 Republican said.

Indeed.

Companies have tried everything to boost the stubbornly anemic numbers of women and minorities in management roles or in certain industries, such as tech or finance. They’re making candidates’ resumes blind to race and gender. Setting up partnerships with historically black colleges. Releasing demographic data in an exercise of public accountability — and humility.

But perhaps the most common and seemingly elementary tactic — compulsory diversity training aimed at helping people’s biases or preventing discriminatory behavior — appears to actually do more harm than good.

In the cover story of the latest issue of the Harvard Business Review, sociologists from Harvard University and Tel Aviv University explore the counterintuitive idea that some of the most common tools for improving diversity — one of which is mandatory training — are not just ineffective. They could be detrimental to improving the number of women and minorities in the managerial ranks.

Making people attend diversity training may seem to make sense, said one of the study’s co-authors, Alexandra Kalev, in an interview: “But it doesn’t work. For decades, diversity management programs flourished with no evidence whatsoever about their effects and their success.”

They enrich consultants and let managers pretend they’re doing something.

The point is that Trump has been saying, for quite some time, that the United States should not have gone to war in Iraq, and that it should side with dictators as long as they “kill terrorists.” The Republican primary electorate endorsed that view. Clinton, as a senator and then as secretary of state, took another view, and backed the use of American power to remove both Hussein and Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi. There’s video of Clinton gleefully saying “We came, we saw, he died” upon learning that Gaddafi had been torn apart by his own people. This has never been treated like a gaffe; but Trump’s “Saddam killed terrorists” riff suddenly is.

By consistently covering Trump’s argument over time, and by following up on it, media outlets did their job to inform voters. That was why Tuesday night’s collective Captain Renault moment was so strange, and so demonstrative of why many media consumers are skeptical of what they’re hearing. Instead of a debate on the facts — should Hussein have been removed? Did he “kill terrorists,” in a contradiction of what Americans were told before the war? — there was manufactured outrage, straight from a rival campaign.

Think of them as Democratic operatives with bylines, and you will not go far wrong.
