OF COURSE HE DOES: Sanders Calls For New NATO That Includes Russia.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called for a new accord between America, its closest allies and Russia as well as Arab nations as a major plank on how to destroy the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“We must create an organization like NATO to confront the security threats of the 21st century — an organization that emphasizes cooperation and collaboration to defeat the rise of violent extremism and importantly to address the root causes underlying these brutal acts,” the Democratic presidential candidate said Thursday during a speech at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

“We must work with our NATO partners, and expand our coalition to include Russia and members of the Arab League.”

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, started at the doorstep of the Cold War and eventually became a major alliance against the then-Soviet Union. So accepting Russia into NATO, or creating a new defense group all together, would rearrange one of the world’s most powerful bonds by uniting the former rival countries around ISIS as the modern enemy.
But Sanders immediately added that the fight against the terror organization, which has taken responsibility for last week’s attacks in Paris, “must be done primarily by Muslim nations with the strong support of their global partners.”

He criticized America’s allies in the region, specifically Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which he believes “have contributed far too little in the fight against ISIS.”

He bashed Saudi Arabia, with the third largest defense budget in the world, for devoting more resources to the fight against Iranian-backed Shia Muslims in Yemen than ISIS. And he criticized Qatar for spending a reported $200 billion on the 2022 FIFA World Cup, “yet very little to fight against ISIS” and for not being “vigilant in stemming the flow of terrorist funding.”

“All of this has got to change,” he said. “Wealthy and powerful Muslim nations in the region can no longer sit on the sidelines and expect the United States to do their work for them.”

Actually, I’m not sure the story supports the headline. Sounds like he wants Russia in a coalition that also involves NATO.

TOP CLINTON DONOR CALLS FOR INCREASED SCRUTINY OF MUSLIMS:

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s largest donor, Univision chairman Haim Saban*, said that he believes the government needs to increase its scrutiny of Muslims in the wake of recent terrorist threats to the United States.

The Islamic State “said, ‘We’re going to Paris,’ and they went to Paris. They’re saying they’re now going to Washington. Watch out, they might,” Saban told The Wrap, a publication that covers Hollywood, in a story published Wednesday. “I’m not suggesting we put Muslims through some kind of a torture room to get them to admit that they are or they’re not terrorists. But I am saying we should have more scrutiny.”

Saban also said that he is unsure if the screening process for Syrian refugees, which has taken center stage since last week’s terrorist attack in Paris, can sufficiently minimize the threat of terrorists entering the country by posing as refugees.

“Scrutinize every single individual. There is no data available from Syria. The country is completely in turmoil,” he said. “It’s all a judgment call of the person conducting the interview. So it’s too dangerous.”

A WIN FOR MEN’S REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE: California Judge Orders Frozen Embryos Destroyed.

In the first decision in California to address a dispute over the fate of frozen embryos after a couple’s divorce, a state judge in San Francisco on Wednesday ordered the destruction of five embryos after a man challenged his ex-wife’s right to use them.

The woman, Mimi C. Lee, a 46-year-old cancer survivor, argued that she would not have another chance to bear biological children. But in 2010, when she and her husband at the time, Stephen Findley, took part in in vitro fertilization, they signed an agreement that the embryos would be destroyed if they ever divorced. . . .

Her ruling is consistent with the pattern across the country. Judges in at least 11 other states, starting with Tennessee in 1992 and including New York and New Jersey, have ruled in post-divorce embryo custody cases. And at least eight of them found in favor of the party who did not want the embryos gestated.

One party’s right not to procreate has usually been considered to trump the other’s right to procreate, said a bioethics professor at the University of California, Davis, School of Law, Lisa Ikemoto — even in cases in which the couples did not sign an agreement as this couple did.

In three states, though, courts have ruled in favor of women who argued that their frozen embryos provided their only chance to have biological children — intermediate appellate courts in Pennsylvania and Illinois and a trial court in Maryland.

Those decisions raise the troubling question of child support.

Both Lindsay and de Blasio promised to carry on the work of presidents who massively overreached. Fifty years after Lindsay, de Blasio still proposes social programs as an alternative to work—but with an important difference. In 1965, Great Society liberals held out the hope of racial inclusion. Today’s liberals offer make-work jobs designed to produce Democratic Party majorities. The underlying problem with both mayors is that they proposed, as [William F. Buckley, who ran against Lindsay in 1965] warned, to do the impossible when they promised to straighten the “crooked timber of humanity.” But government, let alone local government, can do no such thing. As New Yorkers who are angered by de Blasio’s ideological tours in Iowa understand, mayors must stick to the prosaic problems—union contracts, road repairs, and taxation. When a mayor neglects these responsibilities, he ends up as Lindsay did— an exile in his own city.
