WALTER RUSSELL MEAD: Big Blue is Killing Upstate New York.

Tucker walks through the destruction wrought by two policies in particular. New York spends twice the national average on its Medicaid system, even though cheaper systems, like California’s, work better. Moreover, New York, unlike other states, requires cities and counties to help fund the Medicaid system. So the cost of maintaing a poorly functioning Medicaid system gets partially shunted onto upstaters who can’t afford it.

In the high-income playground New York City has become, residents can bear terrible government, excessive taxes, and burdensome regulations. The money wealthy New Yorkers make has helped keep afloat a blue model system that would have collapsed otherwise. But upstate, poorer Americans are reeling from the impact of over-regulation, and the region is drying up. NYC’s blue progressives think of themselves as champions of the little guy and the poor. Upstate New York gives the lie to that self-assessment.

This is a result of the poorly conceived Supreme Court decisions in Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims. They should be revisited.

LIKE CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION, IT’S MOSTLY A TRANSFER OF MONEY TO PARASITES: Board Certification and Fees Anger Doctors.

Dr. Jonathan Weiss is tired of passing exams.

A triple-board-certified physician from upstate New York, Dr. Weiss retakes a long written test in each of his specialties — internal, pulmonary and critical care medicine — every 10 years to maintain his board certification.

If he opted out, he could still keep his medical license. However, many hospitals would not hire him, and patients would be less likely to seek his expertise.

Now, in light of recent changes to the board certification process, Dr. Weiss and thousands of other physicians are rallying against these examinations, which they say are expensive, time consuming and ultimately irrelevant to patient care.

“I’m an idiot,” Dr. Weiss said in an interview. “Here I am, going through this ridiculous process that gets harder each cycle, and all the stuff they’re asking me isn’t helping me. I’d argue that it detracts from my ability to be a good doctor.”

Yeah, I’m skeptical of this stuff. And there’s too much overhead for all the professions now.

#WARONMEN: The Tyranny Of Title IX: How The Case Of The Porn-Linking Law Professor Could Be Worse.

A few days ago, David Lat broke the story of Lisa McElroy, the Drexel University law professor who sent her students a link to a porn video instead of a link to the “great article on writing briefs” that the rest of the message referred to. As David explained, there’s plenty of reason to think that McElroy inadvertently copied and pasted the wrong link and that her greatest sin amounts to nothing more than a particularly embarrassing failure to proofread. She certainly wouldn’t be the first person to make such a mistake. (Just ask ESPN analyst Gerry Hamilton.)

Nevertheless, Drexel put the professor on leave pending an investigation under the school’s sexual harassment and misconduct policy. David later interviewed Professor Michael A. Olivas of the University of Houston Law Center, an expert in education law. Professor Olivas explained why, under Title IX, universities have little choice but to undertake an investigation in situations like this. Title IX is, of course, the federal civil rights law that forbids sex discrimination at schools receiving federal financial support.

Lisa McElroy probably did not intend to create a hostile environment for anyone. She may not have actually offended most of her students. Common sense and compassion will probably lead to a quiet resolution to the case. I hope so.

But what if Lisa McElroy were a man? Would observers be as quick to give the benefit of the doubt? If a male professor foisted anal-bead porn on an unsuspecting class of students, would we wonder, even if just a little bit longer, if he meant to do it?

Of course. Men are inherently evil; women are presumptively pure. Because equality!

Here’s mine. Not as clever, but descriptive. Or maybe this one. Sneak the chorus in at a Hillary appearance if you can. . .
