ELIZABETH WURTZEL EXPLAINS HOW SHE GOT MARRIED: “I stopped behaving badly.” Keep that approach up and you might even stay married.

LIFE IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Why fast and powerful computers are especially good if you are getting old. “A fast computer is not something that I am now getting too slow to keep up with. A fast computer is a necessity, to enable me to stay tuned in to the world. I don’t slow it down. It speeds me up, to the point where it actually keeps me going. I am lost without it.”

WAR ON WOMEN: Advocates Livid About Rape Ruling On Gov. Deval Patrick’s Brother-in-Law.

Related: Howie Carr: Deval Patrick’s devotion to riffraff is disturbing.

And it’s not like this is Deval’s first crush on a rapist. How about Ben LaGuer, the Leominster monster who raped and beat a 59-year-old woman in 1983 and then claimed he was the victim of a racist frame?

Deval described him to the Parole Board as “thoughtful and eloquent,” and chipped in $5,000 for LaGuer’s DNA test, which of course confirmed his guilt.

Talk about a war on women — the State House is Ground Zero. What about ex-Sen. Jim Marzilli, the perv in the Prius from Arlington? And ex-Rep. Carlos Henriquez, convicted of beating up his girlfriend? Some things on Beacon Hill never change.

Then there was Deval’s trusted aide Carl Stanley McGee. He was arrested in Florida in 2007 on charges of sexual assault of a 15-year-old boy in a resort swimming pool. The charges were dropped after McGee paid money to the alleged victim’s family — “it was not a big number,” he said.

So then the administration tried to get McGee a new state job at the Mass. Gaming Commission. That didn’t fly, despite McGee’s friendship with Deval.

Actually, it isn’t just rapists Deval seems to have a soft spot for. Remember the Tsarnaevs, the accused Boston Marathon bombers? Two days after the jihadist’s notes were found in the boat in Watertown, Deval went on “Face the Nation” and lied to Bob Schieffer that he had no idea what the motives of “those two young fellas” were.

And how about Ron Bell, his liaison to “the community”? After Bell was arrested for drunken driving in Boston, somehow he was able to secure a job in Lawrence City Hall with Willie “Landslide” Lantigua.

Deval’s driver was named head of the Parole Board. He lasted until he and his cohorts cut loose a career criminal doing life sentences for armed robberies. As soon as the con got out, he killed another cop.

One last point. At the end of his term, there will be one way to know for sure if Deval’s running for president or not: If he pardons his old pal LaGuer just before he leaves office, we’ll know he’s done with politics.

Don’t count on it.

UPDATE: From the comments: “Perhaps the reason Democrats think there is a rape epidemic in this country is because they know a lot of Democrats.”

WHAT SPACEX’S NEW SPACEPORT WILL LOOK LIKE.

JOURNALISM: Reporters say White House sometimes demands changes to press-pool reports. “White House press-pool reports are supposed to be the news media’s eyes and ears on the president, an independent chronicle of his public activities. They are written by reporters for other reporters, who incorporate them into news articles about President Obama almost every day. Sometimes, however, the White House plays an unseen role in shaping the story.”

THE PARALLELS BETWEEN BARACK OBAMA AND GEORGE W. BUSH:

As President Obama begins to bomb Syria (with no UN authorization and with a coalition of the willing), he is still bombing Iraq, Yemen, and Pakistan; he has U.S. forces spread out across Africa; some are heading back into Iraq; and Guantanamo is still open. It’s hard not to wonder whether in a quiet moment President Obama sometimes thinks he was too smug and too callow back when he poured contempt on President Bush. (After all, even the New York Times is slowly coming to grips with the similarities between how certain events have unfolded. Surely President Obama has noticed them in passing as well.)

Neither President got everything right; both made costly mistakes. But both struggled to come to grips with a serious and growing problem: the spread of a religious movement based on hatred and violence and its organization to fight a war against civilization.

This new kind of struggle is forcing the United States and its allies to grapple with a whole series of extremely complicated and difficult practical, strategic, moral, and legal problems. When Obama was running for President, he showed very little understanding of or sympathy for the difficult and in some cases impossible choices that President Bush had to make.

We hope President Obama’s critics will be less snarky and self righteous than Obama’s supporters were when it was time to criticize Bush; we would, for example, be sorry to hear the entire right wing of the country start calling the President and his top advisors “chicken hawks” and mocking them for sending Americans into harm’s way without having done military service themselves.

We’d also like to see the President demonstrate some class—perhaps by inviting President Bush to the White House to some advice from the only other person on earth who really understands what Obama is going through.

Yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.
