VITAMIN D UPDATE: New Study Supports Links Between Dementia And Vitamin D Deficiency. “The researchers discovered that participants with a moderate vitamin D deficiency had a 53% increased risk of developing any form of dementia, and those with a severe deficiency had a 125% increased risk. Similar results were also found for the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, which is the most common form of dementia. Interestingly, they found that there was a threshold level of 50nmol/L vitamin D in the serum, below which the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s was markedly increased.”

VIRGINIA POSTREL on History’s 7 Most Glamorous Women.

UPDATE: Virginia emails:

Hi Glenn,
Thanks for picking up my listicle, but would you mind adding something to correct the horrible headline and avoid a lot of dumb comments?

As I explain in the first paragraph this is NOT the list of “History’s 7 Most Glamorous Women,” which is a nearly meaningless concept. It is a list of seven glamorous women who helped to define by their example what it meant to be a “modern woman.” They are mostly from the first half of the 20th century, when that was a burning cultural question.

So there you have it.

COMPETENCE: U.S. can’t deliver on FATCA promises. “To circumvent the issue of conflicting local laws, the U.S. Treasury Department conjured for itself powers and responsibilities not part of the actual legislation.” There seems to be a lot of that going on.

THAT’LL BE GOOD PRACTICE: Next Mars Rover Will Make Oxygen from CO2. We’re moving more slowly than I’d like, but at least we’re moving in the right direction.

UH HUH: “He would do better to find his inner George Bush right now. Bush would make what he believed was the right decision and allow the media to beat him up all they wanted. That’s what I want Obama to do.”
