#WARONWOMEN: “A woman has filed a lawsuit against Yahoo and accused a high-level female executive of sexual harassment. Nan Shi states in her complaint that her supervisor, Maria Zhang, forced her to have sex against her will on multiple occasions.”

PROF. MARK PERRY: Uber/Lyft vs. taxis: Let the market decide, not taxi cartels and their government enablers — bureaucrats and legislators.

As I’ve noted before, it’s important to remember that Uber and Lyft are already very heavily regulated ride-sharing services, and in some ways they are regulated even more intensely than traditional taxis by a very ruthless group of regulators – the consumers who use their services. The issue really isn’t regulated versus unregulated ride services; the issue really is who is the primary regulator: a) government bureaucrats and legislators who are often captured by the regulated taxi cartels or b) consumers. And there’s no question that captured regulators almost always put the special interests of the well-organized, concentrated groups of regulated producers like the taxi cartel over the public interest of the dis-organized, dispersed thousands/millions of consumers.

In DC last week, I tried out the taxi-industry’s competitive app, Hailo. It quickly identified a cabbie near me, confirmed the trip, and sent me his picture and phone number. But then he called, said he was stuck in traffic, and couldn’t possibly make the promised pickup time. We took another cab, but then he called me later and told me how to cancel the trip on the app because until I did he couldn’t get any more trips. So still a few bugs in the system.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: New Analysis Shows Problematic Boom In Higher Ed Administrators. “The number of non-academic administrative and professional employees at U.S. colleges and universities has more than doubled in the last 25 years, vastly outpacing the growth in the number of students or faculty, according to an analysis of federal figures.”

Do tell.

IT’S POTEMKIN VILLAGES ALL THE WAY DOWN: The Strange Leak of the New Exposé ‘Clinton, Inc.’ “Sure, hotly anticipated books leak all the time. But 10 days early? And by a tipster who seems to be posing as a Tea Partier—but who one source suspects is affiliated with the Clintons?”

CHANGE: Uber brings hope to Orlando taxi drivers, fear to their bosses. “Taxi drivers, who ferry around some of the nearly 60 million people a year who visit Orlando, aren’t nearly as concerned. In fact, they think the Uber revolution could improve their lives. Several cabdrivers who lease their cars from Mears or other taxi companies told the Orlando Sentinel they want to switch to Uber because they think they can make more money.”

JOEL KOTKIN: There Will Be No Real Recovery Without The Middle Class.

What if they gave a recovery, and the middle class were never invited? Well, that’s an experiment we are running now, and, even with the recent strengthening of the jobs market, it’s not looking very good.

Over the last five years, Wall Street and the investor class have been on a bull run, but the economy has been, at best, torpid for the vast majority of the population. Despite blather about our “democratic capitalism,” stock ownership is increasingly concentrated with the wealthy as the middle class retrenches. The big returns that hedge funds, real estate trusts or venture capitalist receive are simply outside the reach of the vast majority.

A recent study by the Russell Sage Foundation suggests these patterns of inequality, which have been developing over the last several decades, have become more pronounced in the post-Recession years. In 2013 the wealth of those at the 90th and 95thpercentiles was actually higher than 10 years ago. Everyone else is lower.

Hopey-Changey.

MICHAEL BARONE: Political fallout from underage illegals may spread far from the Rio Grande Valley.

The national media may get tired of stories about young illegals crossing the border in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. But as these youngsters are sent to places as distant as Chicago and Lynn, Mass., other troublesome stories are likely to emerge, on local newscasts (which are often starved for news) if not on Obama-protective mainstream media.

Nor are Hispanics necessarily sympathetic with the border-crossers. A Washington Post news story quotes Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke as favoring “greater emphasis on the interests of these children who are refugees from extreme violence” instead of “an acceleration of the deportation process at the expense of these children.” But the Post reporters note that “O’Rourke added that he has been surprised by the anger he has heard toward the immigrants of many of his El Paso constituents, who ‘feel like we can’t take care of everyone, and these children and their families are gaming the system.’ ” O’Rourke’s district, which includes most of El Paso County, is 79 percent Hispanic.

We need to know who they are, and so far, they are saying they’re not going to give us that information.”
