DIVORCE: Fla. Gov. vetoes bill to end permanent alimony. I suppose that more men will be getting these awards in the future.

RAPE AS A POLITICAL WEAPON: Police say liberal student activist threatened herself with rape in Facebook hoax, framed conservatives. Plus: “According to a Facebook page that apparently belongs to Lanker-Simons she is a member of the University of Wyoming Gender & Women’s Studies group as well as the school’s chapter of The Nonviolent Communist. . . . Lanker-Simons was in the news in 2010 when she was a plaintiff in a successful lawsuit against UW after it retracted its invitation to have Bill Ayers speak on campus.” Nonviolent, eh?
HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE, AUSTRALIAN EDITION: Professors Decry Spending Cuts:
A thousand academics have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, published in newspapers across the country on Wednesday, urging her not to go ahead with the cuts in the May budget.
Last month the federal government said it would slash $2.3 billion from universities, as it scrambles to find money to pay for increased spending on schools. . . . Ms Gillard has said the planned cuts mean university funding will still increase, just at a lower rate.
But the NTEU says core funding per student and support for basic research continues to decline while the massive expansion in student numbers from uncapping government-supported places has not been properly funded.
Gillard is a lefty, but other constituencies are more important in the pre-election runup.
BUT REMEMBER, IT’S ALL ABOUT PROTECTING CHILDREN: Report details lives ruined for children put on sex-offender registries: Nudity, streaking, petting, not just rape, have led to youths put on sex-offender registries. If bureaucrats and legislators aren’t smart and disciplined enough to limit these things to really serious matters — and all evidence suggests that they’re not — then they should be abolished.

AT AMAZON, markdowns on multi-tools. I still favor the Leatherman Skeletool, but there are lots of good ones.
21ST CENTURY RELATIONSHIPS: The Care And Keeping Of Potential Husbands. “A 2010 report by advertising giant Havas Worldwide on contemporary gender dynamics describes the increase in female craving for traditional masculinity. . . . Women want a lot, but what are we willing to give in return? By becoming a provider of emotional support and loyalty, you signal your quality as a long-term partner, and potentially knock out three reasons to delay marriage. Relatively few women are even aware of what men are feeling, much less sensitive to their needs, so by stepping up you distinguish yourself from the pack right away.”

FASTER, PLEASE: Gene therapy to repair failing hearts starts trial. “Heart failure results after damage to the heart muscle causes it to deteriorate, which in turn progressively weakens cells that govern heartbeat. The result is serious fatigue due to the heart’s inability to pump blood efficiently. Each year in the UK alone it affects 120,000 people who have never had the condition before, killing a third of them within 12 months. Doctors will inject participants with harmless viruses that ferry a gene called SERCA2a into their heart muscle. The gene codes for a protein that recycles calcium within heart muscle cells, vital for driving each heartbeat and priming the next one. In damaged cells, this recycling is impaired. By loading new copies of the gene the aim is to compensate for this decline.”

DISASTER PREP: So I ordered the Eton Boost Turbine 2000, which is a backup power source for cellphones, etc. It’s a 2000 mah battery pack with USB outlets, and a mini-USB input for charging. You can also charge it with the hand-crank dynamo, which is easy enough, but as the manual says, “It is not recommended to fully charge the Boost Turbine using only dynamo power due to the time required on the user’s part.” It says that one minute of charging should produce about one minute of talk time. I cranked for a couple of minutes, and it’s easy enough, but boring. Still, if you’re suffering from an extensive outage, it’s nice to have a way to charge your phone. And one minute of talk time supports a lot more texting, which is the best way to communicate in a diaster anyway.
I also ordered the Eton Boostbloc 6600, which is over three times as powerful, but can’t be recharged with a crank. It’s easy to use and actually takes up less space. Which is better? Depends on how long you expect to be without power.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING: Woman suspected of tainting OJ at Starbucks said to be trained chemist.
A customer reported seeing the woman remove two bottles of orange juice from her purse and place them in a refrigerated display case at the store, the Mercury News reported.
When the customer alerted store staff the woman fled.
After examining the bottles and detecting what they described as a “toxic smell,” store employees called 911.
Police tracked 50-year-old Ramineh Behbehanian to her home about five miles away after a witness provided her license plate number. She was arrested on suspicion of felony poisoning.
Tests revealed she had mixed rubbing alcohol with the juice, police said. Investigators said they did not have a motive.
It was a “lethal” quantity, reportedly.
BOSTON: Three More Suspects Nabbed In Connection With Marathon Bombing. “Linda Cristello, a Boston attorney who represented Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayevthe students in immigration court this morning, confirmed her clients now face separate federal charges and have an afternoon court appearance related to the bombing case, she told the AP. . . . The identity of the third suspect wasn’t immediately released, but he is said to be from Cambridge.”
