RICHARD FERNANDEZ: “Obama is waist deep in quicksand. The first rule of quicksand is not to struggle; to swim your way out. But Obama won’t. Can’t. The deeper he gets the harder he thrashes. No shame. No self control. And therefore this may end in the manner of the Beast From Hollow Mountain.”

Plus this: “Meanwhile the conservatives, who cannot at present account for more than half the voters, are in a strategic waiting game. At best they can consolidate the half into the nether millstone against which events may grind. The single greatest task for conservatives is to fix their own leadership problems. In so doing they must avoid the single greatest mistake Obama has made, which is to rely on fantasy. The facts, however unpalatable. The truth, no matter how bitter.”

WAPO: The Insiders: For Democrats, dark days ahead. “Meanwhile, this is the administration that felt compelled to affirmatively announce twice on camera in the past week that they are ‘not stupid.'” Don’t get cocky, Republicans.

MORALE: Air Force Pilots Passing Up Big Bonuses To Leave. “In June, the Air Force announced a $225,000 bonus for eligible fighter pilots in exchange for a nine-year commitment. However, pilots are not taking the service up on the offer because of reduced flying hours caused by budget cuts, acting Secretary of the Air Force Eric Fanning said.”

I WAS EXPECTING AN EARTH-SHATTERING KABOOM: Eruption at Sinabung Intensifies. “The latest explosive plumes from the Indonesian volcano have topped 5-7 km (16,500-23,000 feet). All this activity has caused over 5,300 people to be evacuated from the region around the volcano, and as with any extended evacuation, issues with food and water access are occurring. Additionally, the farmland around Sinabung has been heavily damaged by the ash fall. The eruption has also started to produce small pyroclastic flows (see right) that have moved down the slopes of the volcano, so the 5 km exclusion zone may expand if that threat continues to grow.”
