READER BOOK PLUG: From Leigh Bardugo, Siege And Storm.

ADVICE: “Have a glass of cognac, look up the lyrics to Pink Floyd’s ‘Time,’ and then have another glass of cognac. How on earth did Roger Waters write these lyrics in his late 20s? Nobody should confront those thoughts until they’re my age.”

ED MORRISSEY IS not so impressed with The Purge. “Frankly, it’s one of the most ridiculous and ignorant films I’ve seen in a very long time. . . . And yet, even with that, I still have the sneaking suspicion that it might be better than Internship, which also opened this weekend.”

SO IF IT’S WRONG TO JUDGE WOMEN’S SEXUALITY, why is it okay for women to judge men’s? Because they certainly feel free to offer their opinions. . . .

IN RESPONSE TO MY EARLIER POST ON THE POPULAR MECHANICS PIECE ABOUT HOW PRISM MAY HARM U.S. INTERNET COMPANIES, reader Christopher Dillon writes:

I am a long-time reader and the person who Derene describes in his post: I am a Canadian running a business in Hong Kong. I use nearly all of the American companies named in this scandal and several of my websites are hosted in the United States.

You can bet that I am reconsidering those decisions

Feel free to use my name.

I would reconsider, too. Of course, maybe Obama doesn’t care if it hurts U.S. Internet companies.

IN RESPONSE TO THE SPYING SCANDALS, a lawyer-reader emails:

When I was in law school, the US armed forces were banned from the on-campus interview process because of what the law school establishment viewed as their lack of respect for human rights. It cannot be gainsaid that no organization serves as a greater threat to the human rights of those living in the United States than the U.S. Department of Justice, which has run roughshod over civil liberties and continues to push the envelope in redefining acceptable law enforcement conduct. I can’t really understand how any law student would want to join in these efforts — even when more respectable legal work is so hard to come by — but the legal academy can demonstrate where they stand in this battle by refusing to aid and abet the DOJ through the use of their on-campus interview programs. Let’s add the IRS to the banned list to while we are at it.

If you publish this idea, please don’t use my name. Let’s make the DOJ subpoena our email providers to get it.

Well, I won’t give it up without a court order.

AM I DETECTING A NEW SNARKINESS IN PRESS COVERAGE? Obama concludes talks, then plays golf. That’s from the AP, and here’s the lede: “A few hours after saying goodbye to China’s leader, President Barack Obama said hello to the golf course.”

PEJMAN YOUSEFZADEH: Lame Excuses for the IRS Scandal Get Lamer and Bite More Dust. “Recall that from the outset, after it was revealed that the IRS was targeting conservatives and conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status, IRS-apologists came out with the claim that the unwarranted scrutiny was the result of staffers in Ohio offices who went rogue. As such, according to the apologists, we were not supposed to think that the agency as a whole was rotten to the core; just that there were a few isolated bad apples who in no way, shape, or form were representative of the IRS as a whole. That theory never held much water to begin with. It holds even less water now.”

CHARLIE MARTIN STARTS A NEW ROUND: 13 Weeks of Fast Days and Slow Days. “My new experiment, with more carbs. Down five pounds, let’s see if it’s meaningful.”

HMM: German court case could force euro exit, warns key judge. “In so far as the ECB is acting ‘ultra vires’, and these violations are deemed prolonged and serious, the court must decide whether Germany can remain a member of monetary union on constitutional grounds.”

MARK STEYN: The All-Seeing State: The inevitable corruption of the permanent bureaucracy. “When Nixon tried to sic the IRS on a few powerful political enemies, the IRS told him to take a hike. When Obama’s courtiers tried to sic the IRS on thousands of ordinary American citizens, the agency went along, and very enthusiastically. This is a scale of depravity hitherto unknown to the tax authorities of the United States, and for that reason alone they should be disarmed and disbanded — and rebuilt from scratch with far more circumscribed powers. . . . It may be that the strange synchronicity between the president and the permanent bureaucracy is mere happenstance and not, as it might sound to the casual ear, the sinister merging of party and state. Either way, they need to be pried apart. When the state has the capability to know everything except the difference between right and wrong, it won’t end well.”

I suppose hangings are a step too far.

HOW’S THAT HOPEY-CHANGEY STUFF WORKIN’ OUT FOR YA? (CONT’D): Waiter and waitress nation: The May payrolls report shows the US creating jobs, just not many good ones.

Well, the Silicon Valley plutocrats who donate to Obama need people to handle the valet parking.

UPDATE: A reader email: “Remember when Bush was president…..and Liberals derided the jobs being created as ones ‘flipping burgers?’ Amazing how their current position on the political power food chain colors some people’s perceptions.” Yes, those were called McJobs.

HOW’S THAT HOPEY-CHANGEY STUFF WORKIN’ OUT FOR YA? (CONT’D): Employment In U.S. Lags Where It Was In 2007. “While several European countries have fared worse, Canada, Sweden and even Britain, which is trapped in yet another recession, have enjoyed healthier job gains than the United States. In fact, of the nine countries surveyed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only perennially-troubled Italy and Japan performed worse.” But Obama’s big Wall Street donors have done well.
