PRIORITIES: Cities Declare War On Food Trucks. “Food trucks have become the hottest new industry, yet many cities are doing everything they can to stop them in their tracks. In city after city, lawmakers are imposing complicated regulations on food trucks and other street vendors, often in the name of consumer safety, which make it nearly impossible for vendors to actually operate their trucks. . . This is pointless, self-destructive policy, not only because it’s keeping downtown office workers from delicious street food, but also because it makes it harder for small, undercapitalized entrepreneurs to employ themselves—exactly the kind of people cities should be helping, not hurting.”

It’s all about juice. These people don’t have juice.

MICKEY KAUS: Does Fox Need Competition From The Right? “What about Fox News’ viewers? Are they going to go along like sheep? They now have no network that represents their perspective on what seems to be a key issue for Obama’s second term. Is it time for a new Fox? (Wouldn’t it be time for a new Fox anyway? That lineup has been stale for years.)”

HARSHLY CRITICIZING JUDGES FOR THEIR PAST CONDUCT A CRIME? Eugene Volokh comments: “I think this decision is wrong, and quite dangerous. . . . A very bad result, which I hope the Indiana Supreme Court reviews and reverses.”

JAMES TARANTO: Bitter Clingers Again: The Bigotry Behind The Push For Gun Control. “Marshall’s objection is not merely to guns but to a ‘tribe’ of people with an ‘alien’ culture that is ‘invading’ places that belong to his own kind. Is he unaware of how this sounds, or is he deliberately employing the language of bigotry in order to be provocative?”

Plus: “We notice two things these three men have in common. First, there is no indication any of them have ever misused a gun, either accidentally or deliberately–in contrast to Marshall’s correspondent, who nonetheless evinces a smug sense of his own superiority over them. Second, they all have eccentric political views, which Marshall’s correspondent seems to think is an argument for taking away their guns. Never mind the Second Amendment, do these guys even respect the First?”

JACOB SULLUM: “Universal background checks” could unjustly deny millions of people the right to armed self-defense. “Although Obama did not mention that little detail last week, The Washington Post reported earlier this month that the administration was ‘seriously considering’ creating a system that would “track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database.” Second Amendment supporters historically have opposed gun registration, fearing that it could ultimately lead to confiscation, something that has actually happened in places such as Canada, Great Britain, Australia, California, and New York City.”

MICKEY KAUS: “I don’t quite see why the Republicans’ move to extend the debt ceiling for 3-months is the first ‘concession’ of a party intimidated by the power of Obama’s inaugural speech (as the NYT would have it). Didn’t Boehner just get Obama to sign on to the sort of short term extension the President had previously opposed? Hadn’t Obama wanted a permanent ceiling fix?”
