LATELY, OUR GOVERNMENT SEEMS A LITTLE TOO ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT “SUBMISSION:” Criminal Charges Aside, the Air Force’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program Advises Victims To Submit.

In a bit of news that brings to mind, “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” it seems that an Air Force brochure offering advice on “Sexual Assault Prevention & Response” offers nuggets of wisdom that are … umm … just a bit awkward, in light of the arrest, for sexual assault, of the guy in charge of the Air Force’s sexual assault prevention program. Obtained and posted online by Wired, the brochure from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina counsels victims that “it may be advisable to submit than to resist.” Aside from the atrocious construction of that sentence, that’s a hell of a bit of advice to have handed out by a program headed up by a guy who, assuming the charges prove well-founded, would probably very much like his victims on the submissive side.

This whole thing seems kinda like a metaphor . . . .

THE HILL: New Benghazi probe evidence puts spotlight back on Hillary Clinton. “New revelations about the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, are pulling Hillary Clinton back into a political firestorm that the presumptive 2016 candidate had so far managed to escape unscathed. House Republicans have unearthed new evidence suggesting the Obama administration could have done more to help the U.S. diplomats under attack last Sept. 11.”

UPDATE: “The ignored cables pleading for security are the ‘there’s a naked woman in the backyard crawling on all fours’ of Benghazi.”

PROPAGANDA WORKS: Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it’s up, says study. “Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show. Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.”

MASSACHUSETTS: Markey’s TV ad buy may
mean he’s running scared. “In a sign of concern among Democrats, U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey’s Senate campaign is launching the first of an expected barrage of TV ads as national Republicans accused him of running a ‘despicable’ smear campaign against GOP nominee Gabriel Gomez. Markey’s TV ad buy starting today is the first since he won the Democratic nomination and is designed to shore up the longtime Malden congressman’s image after his tough primary battle against U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch. Polls taken right after last week’s primary had Markey clinging to a surprisingly small lead in a matchup with Republican newcomer and businessman Gomez, and showed many voters viewing Markey negatively.”

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: The Jobs Of The Future Don’t Require A College Degree.

A key point here: The jobs of the future are only “low skilled” if you define “low skilled” as not requiring college. Being a good carpenter (56% growth, Jesus is still with us) or, for that matter, a good medical secretary (41% growth), takes smarts (actual smarts, not just book smarts), hard work, and dedication.

Relatedly, the jobs of the future will be high-paying. It’s simply not true that all high-paying jobs require a college degree. It’s very very possible to make a very good living as a tradesman, because good tradesmen are–and always will be, unlike Fortran programmers and data entry clerks–in high demand.

Wait, you mean those years I spent learning Fortran and operating a keypunch machine in the 1970s were wasted?

BING WEST: Benghazi: Do as I Say, or as I Do? “The military has conducted hundreds of assessments for battles throughout Iraq and Afghanistan. At the platoon level, an ‘After Action’ critique is required whenever there are American fatalities. But at the highest level, there has been no military After Action assessment about Benghazi.”

DID THE POLICE FAIL TO SEE THE SIGNS IN CLEVELAND? “One neighbor says a naked woman was seen crawling on her hands and knees in the backyard of the house a few years ago. Another heard pounding on the home’s doors and noticed plastic bags over the windows. Both times, police showed up, the neighbors say, but never went inside.”

MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD ASK CHRIS CHRISTIE ABOUT THIS STORY:

Police officials are examining the response to a 911 call Sunday night that left a city man struggling with an intruder at his building without any officers arriving.

Dan Dodson said it was 20 or 30 minutes before two officers eventually arrived in response to his wife’s calls to police telephone numbers.

“We’re looking into it to determine if the proper protocols were followed,” Lt. Steve Varn said yesterday evening.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Sometimes 20 or 30 minutes.

UPDATE: Reader Jane Vawter emails:

Dan Dodson is my friend and neighbor. Here is the follow up.

The city is in meltdown – mayor under indictment, police force cut, councilmen without a clue. We have 80k residents and a shooting every night. I’ve had my problems with the police too. Dan and I are both activists in completely different ways but to no avail.

Like I say, someone should ask Chris Christie like this. And if basic city services are in collapse, isn’t it crazy to be working overtime to disarm citizens?

J.R. DUNN: Philip K. Dick and our predicament. “Dick, it seems, was a far superior prophet than the colleagues who disdained him, because, unlike many of them, he had a line on human nature, which never changes. . . . Dick’s political awareness was not so much undeveloped as developed to a point where he fully recognized the futility of politics. Instead he focused on human decency, as expressed through empathy and sacrifice.”
