MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT ELIZABETH WARREN’S SCHOLARSHIP? And a U. Va. connection? “Breitbart News is not alleging that Sullivan, Warren, and Westbrook engaged in scientific misconduct. We are, however, presenting evidence that suggests the 1991 investigation conducted by the University of Texas into the allegations brought by Philip Shuchman in his scathing sixty page review of the book Sullivan, Warren, and Westbrook co-authored in 1989 was neither thorough nor exculpatory. . . . All three nationally recognized experts on bankruptcy who reviewed the book–Shuchman of Rutgers Law School, Marjorie Girth of SUNY Buffalo Law School, and economist Michelle White of the University of Michigan–gave it negative reviews. In the final two articles in this series, we will explore the unanswered questions posed by those reviews, as well as the institutional failings of the National Science Foundation and Harvard University and the roles they played in this unfolding scandal.”

Note Megan McArdle’s earlier criticism. “Does this persistent tendency to choose odd metrics that inflate the case for some left wing cause matter? If Warren worked at a think tank, you’d say, ‘Ah, well, that’s the genre.’ On the other hand, you’d also tend to regard her stuff with a rather beady eye. It’s unlikely to have been splashed across the headline of every newspaper in the United States. Her work gets so much attention because it comes from a Harvard professor. And this isn’t Harvard caliber material–not even Harvard undergraduate.”

SCIENCE: Facebook Sharing Comparable To Enjoyment From Sex, Food. “The reward given by a person’s brain when a Facebook posting of theirs is viewed, liked and commented on has proven to be comparable in pleasure to the response from food and sex, according to a recent Harvard University study.”

THE PERILS OF COMPUTERS THAT CAN’T BE FIXED. “When the warranty ends, manufacturers would prefer it if stuff disappeared so they could sell you a new product. But the real world isn’t nearly so tidy. . . . Long-lasting, repairable hardware is the key to making computers available to people who couldn’t otherwise afford them. Upgradeable tech also helps — even if you don’t upgrade your own computer, somebody else down the line can. It’s amazing how long people can keep technology running.”

WALTER RUSSELL MEAD: Central Bankers Losing Independence? “At the end of the day, this is about the long term sustainability of a fiat money system. If monetary authorities get into the habit of excessively manipulating the money supply, a fiat money system gradually loses credibility. That loss of credibility was a factor in the inflationary wave of the 1970s, and the greater move toward political independence for central bankers was part of the response. But what if the recent long-term financial crises are chipping away at central banks’ cherished political independence?”

What if?

“HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE” MEETS “21ST CENTURY RELATIONSHIPS:” College President ‘Prostitution’ Site Ruled Legal. “A website that authorities say two aging professors used to run a multistate prostitution ring is legal, a state judge has ruled, highlighting the difficulties that prosecutors face in using decades-old laws to combat a modern phenomenon.”

Meanwhile, why not just legalize prostitution. Legal prostitution is safer and healthier, and it’ll provide employment opportunities for some of those unemployed college grads.

DOES A HIGHER VOCABULARY MEAN HIGHER INCOME?

FARHAD MANJOO: You Will Want Google Goggles. “By the end of my meeting with Starner, I decided that if Google manages to pull off anything like the machine he uses, wearable computers seem certain to conquer the world. It simply will be better to have a machine that’s hooked onto your body than one that responds to it relatively slowly and clumsily.”

JAMES FALLOWS IS NO LONGER WARNING OF A “COUP,” but Ann Althouse remains unimpressed. “Fallows’ piece is embarrassingly hysterical, with or without the new title.”
