THE HILL: House conservatives to unveil budget which balances books faster. “House conservatives on Tuesday morning will tack to the right and unveil an alternative to the House GOP leadership’s 2013 budget plan that balances in five years. The new Republican Study Committee (RSC) spending plan has deeper cuts than the group’s budget for last year, which would have balanced the budget in nine years.”
Alas, the do-nothing Democratic Senate won’t pass it, but it’s good to make clear where the problem lies.
THOMAS SOWELL ON GERALDO ON HOODIES: “The man who shot the black teenager in Florida may be as guilty as sin, for all I know — or he may be innocent. We pay taxes so that there can be judges and jurors who sort out the facts. We do not need Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or the president of the United States spouting off before the trial has even begun. Have we forgotten the media’s rush to judgment in the Duke University ‘rape’ case that blew up completely when the facts came out?”
BAD NEWS FOR FORMER REP. WILLIAM “FREEZER CASH” JEFFERSON (D-LA): Appeals Court Upholds 10 of Jefferson’s Corruption Convictions. “A two-year investigation revealed — and a jury agreed — that Jefferson, now 65, had committed multiple felonies during a years-long scheme to line his pockets that included demanding retainer payments and stock shares from businesses he agreed to promote during trips to Africa. During visits to countries that included Cameroon and Nigeria, Jefferson would represent these businesses by using his position as a Congressman to gain access, including using embassy-paid motorcades and letters sent on official stationery. Executives of those firms would then send payments of cash and stock to companies that were owned by Jefferson’s family members but controlled by Jefferson. Almost $100,000 cash was found in the Congressman’s freezer when federal agents raided his Virginia home.”
DOESN’T FIT THE NARRATIVE: Anti-Obama protest in SF far outdraws any Occupy event this year; still ignored by MSM.
UPDATE: More here.
THE HILL: Obama Hot Mic Gaffe Lets Republicans Call Him Unprincipled. “Republicans used an unscripted remark by President Obama on Monday to label him as someone who could easily change his positions if he wins reelection.”
Every Obama statement has an expiration date. Every single one.
BLOOMBERG: Obama Relies on Debt Collectors Profiting From Student Loan Woe. “With $67 billion of student loans in default, the Education Department is turning to an army of private debt-collection companies to put the squeeze on borrowers. Working on commissions that totaled about $1 billion last year, these government contractors face growing complaints that they are violating federal laws by insisting on stiff payments, even when borrowers’ incomes make them eligible for leniency. . . . In failing health, after contracting hepatitis from a blood transfusion, Campos pleaded with Pioneer, owned by SLM Corp. (SLM), the nation’s largest student-loan company better known as Sallie Mae. He left a $40,000-a-year job at the Massachusetts health department when he got too sick to work and waited for a liver transplant. The 52-year-old former busboy, a naturalized U.S. citizen from El Salvador, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the 1990s from Cambridge College in Massachusetts.”
Occupy the Department of Education! Or, you know, the White House. Just the kind of behavior you’d expect from the administration of President Goldman Sachs! (Bumped).
UPDATE: A reader emails:
Noticed your post regarding student loan providers engaging in hard-headed collection practices. You might want to also consider another feature of student loans that I believe resembles loan-sharking. After graduation, many students consolidate their loans into a single loan. This is because each year a student is in school, a new loan is made. Sometimes there are multiple loans in a single year, due to different kinds of eligibility, etc. This means that a graduating student can often have a half-dozen or more individual loans to manage. Student loan providers helpfully allow consolidation of all these loans into a single loan with a fixed interest rate. Now here’s the rub. Once consolidated, the loans cannot be refinanced and the borrower is locked to the same interest rate no matter how low market rates might go. There have been bills introduced to allow student loan refinancing, but so far the lenders have lobbied heavily against allowing the practice and the bills have failed. This means that a student who borrowed during a period of high rates is locked to those rates, potentially for decades, without any real recourse.
No name on this one. I am in administration now.
A report from the Dark Side!
GRAY NATION: The Very Real Economic Dangers of An Aging America. “In such a future, jobless recoveries will be the only recoveries we know.” Yeah, it’s too bad people didn’t have more kids 20 or 30 years ago. Too bad they listened to the people who told them that the 21st Century’s biggest problem would be too many young people . . . .
Luckily for us, Americans listened less than China or Europe did.

SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER: Former NAACP leader accuses Sharpton and Jackson of ‘exploiting’ Trayvon Martin.
THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY: Life Imitates Art.
TEN YEARS AGO ON INSTAPUNDIT: “I note that most of the book-review sections that published glowing reviews of Bellesiles’ book have not yet retracted those. The New York Times even reran an excerpt from Garry Wills’ fawning review just a few months ago when Arming America came out in paperback, long after it was obvious that the book had serious problems.”
HATE AND RACISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY: An Unfortunate T-Shirt Hits Florida Streets In Wake Of Trayvon Martin Killing.
Plus, there’s a Facebook page dedicated to killing George Zimmerman. Facebook has removed it, but here’s the screenshot. Note that they misspelled “racist.”
BREITBART IS HERE: Andrew Breitbart Lives, at Supreme Court Rally.
Before John Solhan left for the anti-ObamaCare protest at the Supreme Court, he printed out a bunch of posters bearing Andrew Breitbart’s face.
Breitbart, the conservative Internet publisher who challenged the mainstream media, died March 1. The black-and-white image of his face was recognizable to virtually every Tea Party demonstrator standing just past the steps that ascend to the high court, where justices were hearing the first hours of argument over President Obama’s health care law.
The tea partiers organized an impromptu protest in mid-morning as ObamaCare allies had a press conference of their own just a few paces away.
Be Breitbart.

WHEN THE HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE MEETS THE CHICAGO WAY: Audit Finds Chicago State U. Lost Track of 950 Computers.
Chicago State has previously been noted for its “abysmal” graduation rate.
CLASS PROBLEMS: “The incident at Florida Atlantic ended when campus police used a Taser on the student and took her to a mental health center, but not before she had uttered a stream of racially charged profanities, screamed death threats and smacked at least one classmate (see image above). Students in the classroom, though, seemed more interested in filming the spectacle than helping the instructor regain order.”
This, however, strikes me as dumb: “Classrooms can be effectively managed if faculty members set ground rules about the kind of behavior they expect.” Watch the video, and then ask if the problem was a lack of ground rules. If you don’t know that kind of behavior is unacceptable, you shouldn’t be in college.
But note this: “In the case of the Florida student, she gave a poised and confident interview to a local TV station about Trayvon Martin, the Central Florida teenager who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer, the night before her outburst in the classroom.”
