RON BAILEY ON MUSLIMS AND FREE SPEECH: “No one has the right to a world in which he is never despised.” If you don’t want to be despised, though, it’s best not to behave despicably. “Cultural understanding is not a one-way street. Muslims have a responsibility to understand and respect the cultural traditions of Americans.”

READER BOOK PLUG: Reader David Butler writes:

Two weeks ago Amazon announced, among other things, Kindle Serials: a buyer can subscribe to a serial, and pay automatically for each installment as it comes out. This is an old model of publishing, and in fact Amazon is apparently launching the option with books by Charles Dickens.

Amazon is not the only one to have thought that serial storytelling and Kindles would be a good match. This year, I have been self-publishing not one, but two serial adventure stories as ebooks (~35,000 words each).

Rock Band Fights Evil is an action adventure pulp horror story about a ragged rock band of damned men, fighting to get their own back against the various powers of Hell. Rock Band #1 is Hellhound on My Trail.

City of the Saints is a steampunk gonzo action romp set in the year 1859 in the American west against the background of the looming secession of the south. Part the First is Liahona… what could be more timely than an action epic about steampunk Mormons?

If you were willing to give me a reader plug mention, I’d appreciate it.

Done. Sounds interesting.

PROF. JACOBSON: Maybe Romney answer was “inelegant” only because Mother Jones didn’t disclose that part of tape was missing. Plus, holes in the “equipment failure” explanation?

And: “While there is a myth that the Shirley Sherrod tape was unfairly edited (it was NOT, it was perfectly fair), no such media narrative will develop around the incomplete Romney tape. That’s just the way it works in the age of Obama.”

UPDATE: More Rose Mary Woods jokes. And a photo!

ANOTHER UPDATE: John Fund: Media Hypocrisy In Treatment of Romney Tape. They’re not “media.” They’re Democratic operatives with bylines.

BLOG COMMENT OF THE DAY: “So I feel that I’ve been President for all Americans – the stupid Cambridge Police, the members of my security detail who wouldn’t think twice about shooting a black guy, doctors who perform unnecessary amputations out of greed; bankers and pitchfork-wielding mobs; Hispanics and their enemies, who I encouraged them to attack; the people who were entitled to money when GM went bankrupt, and the people who got money when GM went bankrupt; filmmakers critical of Islam who give me lots of money, and filmmakers critical of Islam who are invited to come downtown for routine questioning.” Much more at the link.

OCCUPY WALL STREET: Pushing Up Daisies, Not Pining For The Fjords.

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street—the movement that was to be the Left’s answer to the Tea Party, the one that had the chattering classes abuzz with excitement that History had reached an inflection point.

Instead, the slow process of attrition has all but killed off the movement. As MercuryNews reports, fewer than 500 people showed up for an anniversary demonstration in San Francisco, and very small numbers turned up in New York as well, considerably fewer than the thousands who were turning out at events late last year.

OWS, like John Cleese’s parrot, is still dead. If you can’t get more than “hundreds” of demonstrators to turn out in San Francisco, it’s past time to call the hearse.

Still, there are some lessons to be learned.

WELL, YES: Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel: Romney must own ’47 percent’ argument 100 percent of the time. “An ever-shrinking number of Americans finance an ever-growing proportion of the government’s budget. The tax code is becoming steadily more progressive, which shouldn’t surprise anyone who understands power politics. It’s always easier to force sacrifice on an unpopular minority than it is to ask the majority to pony up. . . . Anyone who doesn’t think the welfare-industrial complex is trying to increase dependency isn’t paying attention.”

Related: Howie Carr: “A huge percentage of Obama’s voters are basically wards of the state. There are millions of them, and they have no intention of voting for anyone who might want them to ever go out and work for a living.”

THE U.S. LAGS BEHIND THE ANGLOSPHERE TO THE POINT THAT IT’S BECOMING EMBARRASSING: Canada rises to Top Five in world economic freedom ranking as U.S. plummets to 18th. “Canada has taken its place among the Top 5 countries with the most economic freedom, according to a new Fraser Institute report — now leaps and bounds ahead of the United States thanks to the gradual shrinking of the Canadian government since the mid-1990s as America’s just got bigger. . . . Meanwhile, the United States, once a ‘standard bearer’ of economic liberty among industrial nations, spiralled 10 spots from the 2011 rankings to 18th place — its lowest position ever, and a huge drop from its second place spot in 2000.”

INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY: Obama’s Media Matters Goon Squad. ” The Justice Department has been caught colluding with left-wing media ‘watchdog’ Media Matters to suppress critics who’ve embarrassed the Obama administration. What is this, Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela?” As close as they can make it.
